Control Theory: The Double Pendulum Inverted On A Cart, Ian J P Crowe-Wright Dec 2018

Control Theory: The Double Pendulum Inverted On A Cart, Ian J P Crowe-Wright

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this thesis the Double Pendulum Inverted on a Cart (DPIC) system is modeled using the Euler-Lagrange equation for the chosen Lagrangian, giving a second-order nonlinear system. This system can be approximated by a linear first-order system in which linear control theory can be used. The important definitions and theorems of linear control theory are stated and proved to allow them to be utilized on a linear version of the DPIC system. Controllability and eigenvalue placement for the linear system are shown using MATLAB. Linear Optimal control theory is likewise explained in this section and its uses are applied to …

The Compensation For Few Clusters In Clustered Randomized Trials With Binary Outcomes, Lily Stalter Nov 2018

The Compensation For Few Clusters In Clustered Randomized Trials With Binary Outcomes, Lily Stalter

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Cluster randomized trials are increasingly popular in epidemiological and medical research. When analyzing the data from such studies it is imperative that the hierarchical structure of the data be taken into account. Multilevel logistic regression is used to analyze clustered data with binary outcomes. Previous literature shows that a greater number of clusters is more important than a large number of subjects per cluster. This paper investigates if it is possible to compensate for the increased bias found for parameter estimates when the number of clusters is decreased. A simulation study was conducted where the absolute percent relative bias for …

Reaction Simulations: A Rapid Development Framework, Brendan Drake Donohoe Nov 2018

Reaction Simulations: A Rapid Development Framework, Brendan Drake Donohoe

Shared Knowledge Conference

Chemical Reaction Networks (CRNs) are a popular tool in the chemical sciences for providing a means of analyzing and modeling complex reaction systems. In recent years, CRNs have attracted attention in the field of molecular computing for their ability to simulate the components of a digital computer. The reactions within such networks may occur at several different scales relative to one another – at rates often too difficult to directly measure and analyze in a laboratory setting. To facilitate the construction and analysis of such networks, we propose a reduced order model for simulating such networks as a system of …

Two Applications Of High Order Methods: Wave Propagation And Accelerator Physics, Oleksii Beznosov Nov 2018

Two Applications Of High Order Methods: Wave Propagation And Accelerator Physics, Oleksii Beznosov

Shared Knowledge Conference

Numerical simulations of partial differential equations (PDE) are used to predict the behavior of complex physics phenomena when the real life experiments are expensive. Discretization of a PDE is the representation of the continuous problem as a discrete problem that can be solved on a computer. The discretization always introduces a certain inaccuracy caused by the numerical approximation. By increasing the computational cost of the numerical algorithm the solution can be computed more accurately. In the theory of numerical analysis this fact is called the convergence of the numerical algorithm. The idea behind high order methods is to improve the …

Quantitative Validation Of Simulated Sea Ice Displacements, Bryan R. Mccormick Oct 2018

Quantitative Validation Of Simulated Sea Ice Displacements, Bryan R. Mccormick

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Accurate simulations of Arctic sea ice are important for forecasting as well as for understanding the global climate. However, quantitative measures for simulation displacements are underutilized. We present five such measures proposed as being useful in the validation of simulated sea ice displacements. Using drifting buoy and satellite measurements of sea ice motion as observation, we apply the metrics in a comparison of observed displacements and predicted displacements from the Arctic sea ice simulation MPM\_ice. We find the metric scores are useful for comparing simulations and observations. The metrics also brought to light problems in the simulation MPM_ice, demonstrating their …

Non-Locality, Precognition & Spirit From The Physics Point Of View, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

There are various supernatural phenomena which can hardly be explained by the existing mainstream science, for instance non-local interactions (e.g. ESP) and also precognitive interdictions. And there are other problems such as how to include the Spirit in the framework of physics. For example, it has been known for long time that intuition plays significant role in many professions and human life, including entrepreneurship, government, and also in detective or law enforcement activities. Despite these examples, such a precognitive interdiction is hardly accepted in mainstream science. In this paper, we discuss non-local interactions and advanced solutions of Maxwell equations, and …

Despite its enormous practical success, many physicists and philosophers alike agree that the quantum theory is full of contradictions and paradoxes which are difficult to solve consistently. Even after 90 years, the experts themselves still do not all agree what to make of it. The area of disagreement centers primarily around the problem of describing observations. Formally, the socalled quantum measurement problem can be defined as follows: the result of a measurement is a superposition of vectors, each representing the quantity being observed as having one of its possible values. The question that has to be answered is : how …

Neutrosophic sets (NSs) handle uncertain information while fuzzy sets (FSs) and intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFs) fail to handle indeterminate information. Soft set theory, neutrosophic set theory, and rough set theory are different mathematical models for handling uncertainties and they are mutually related. The neutrosophic soft rough set (NSRS) model is a hybrid model by combining neutrosophic soft sets with rough sets. We apply neutrosophic soft rough sets to graphs. In this research paper, we introduce the idea of neutrosophic soft rough graphs (NSRGs) and describe different methods of their construction. We consider the application of NSRG in decision-making problems. In …

A single-valued neutrosophic set has king power to express uncertainty characterized by indeterminacy, inconsistency and incompleteness. Most of the existing single-valued neutrosophic cross entropy bears an asymmetrical behavior and produces an undefined phenomenon in some situations. In order to deal with these disadvantages, we propose a new cross entropy measure under a single-valued neutrosophic set (SVNS) environment, namely NS-cross entropy, and prove its basic properties. Also we define weighted NS-cross entropy measure and investigate its basic properties. We develop a novel multi-attribute group decision-making (MAGDM) strategy that is free from the drawback of asymmetrical behavior and undefined phenomena. It is …

A neutrosophic number (a + bI) is a significant mathematical tool to deal with indeterminate and incomplete information which exists generally in real-world problems, where a and bI denote the determinate component and indeterminate component, respectively. We define score functions and accuracy functions for ranking neutrosophic numbers. We then define a cosine function to determine the unknown weight of the criteria. We define the neutrosophic number harmonic mean operators and prove their basic properties. Then, we develop two novel multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) strategies using the proposed aggregation operators. We solve a numerical example to demonstrate the feasibility, applicability, and …

Neutrosophy is a new branch of philosophy which studies the origin, nature and scope of neutralities. This has formed the basis for a series of mathematical theories that generalize the classical and fuzzy theories such as the neutrosophic sets and the neutrosophic logic. In the paper, the fundamental concepts related to neutrosophy and its antecedents are presented. Additionally, fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence will be defined and how neutrosophy has come to strengthen this discipline.

The notion of a neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCI-number is considered in the first article (“Neutrosophic Quadruple BCK/BCI-Algebras”, by Young Bae Jun, Seok-Zun Song, Florentin Smarandache, and Hashem Bordbar), and a neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCI-algebra, which consists of neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCI-numbers, is constructed. Several properties are investigated, and a (positive implicative) ideal in a neutrosophic quadruple BCK-algebra and a closed ideal in a neutrosophic quadruple BCI-algebra are studied. Given subsets A and B of a BCK/BCI-algebra, the set NQ(A,B), which consists of neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCInumbers with a condition, is established. Conditions for the set NQ(A,B) to be a (positive implicative) ideal of a …

In this book authors for the first time introduce the new notion of special subset vertex subgraph of subset vertex graphs introduced recently in [46]. These subset vertex graphs takes the vertex set values from the power set P(X) of any set X. The main speciality of these subset vertex graphs is that once a set of subsets from P(X) is given, the edges of the graph are fixed in a unique way, so for a given collection of subset vertices the graph is always unique [46]. The special subset vertex subgraphs of G are the ones, which have the …

Neutrosophic set has been derived from a new branch of philosophy, namely Neutrosophy. Neutrosophic set is capable of dealing with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information. Neutrosophic set approaches are suitable to modeling problems with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information in which human knowledge is necessary, and human evaluation is needed. Neutrosophic set theory was proposed in 1998 by Florentin Smarandache, who also developed the concept of single valued neutrosophic set, oriented towards real world scientific and engineering applications. Since then, the single valued neutrosophic set theory has been extensively studied in books and monographs introducing neutrosophic sets and its applications, …

Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Sets In Semigroups, Florentin Smarandache, Young Bae Jun, Madad Khan

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The first chapter, Characterizations of regular and duo semigroups based on int-soft set theory, investigates the relations among int-soft semigroup, int-soft (generalized) bi-ideal, int-soft quasi-ideal and int-soft interior ideal. Using int-soft left (right) ideal, an int-soft quasi-ideal is constructed. We show that every int-soft quasi-ideal can be represented as the soft intersection of an int-soft left ideal and an int-soft right ideal. Using int-soft quasiideal, an int-soft bi-ideal is established. Conditions for a semigroup to be regular are displayed.

Neutrosophic set and neutrosophic logic theory are renowned theories to deal with complex, not clearly explained and uncertain real life problems, in which classical fuzzy sets/models may fail to model properly. This paper introduces an algorithm for finding minimum spanning tree (MST) of an undirected neutrosophic weighted connected graph (abbr. UNWCG) where the arc/edge lengths are represented by a single valued neutrosophic numbers. To build the MST of UNWCG, a new algorithm based on matrix approach has been introduced. The proposed algorithm is compared to other existing methods and finally a numerical example is provided.

Neutrosophic Over-/Under-/Off-Set and Logic were defined for the first time in 1995 and published in 2007. During 1995-2016 was presented them to various national and international conferences and seminars. These new notions are totally different from other sets/logics/probabilities. We extended the neutrosophic set respectively to Neutrosophic Overset {when some neutrosophic component is > 1}, to Neutrosophic Underset {when some neutrosophic component is < 0}, and to Neutrosophic Offset {when some neutrosophic components are off the interval [0, 1], i.e. some neutrosophic component > 1 and other neutrosophic component < 0}. This is no surprise since our realworld has numerous examples and applications of over-/under-/off-neutrosophic components. In this paper we present a short history of logics: from particular cases of 2-symbol or numerical valued logic to the general case of n-symbol or numerical valued logic. We show generalizations of 2-valued Boolean logic to fuzzy logic, also from the Kleene’s and Lukasiewicz’ 3-symbol valued logics or Belnap’s 4-symbol valued logic to the most general nsymbol or numerical valued refined neutrosophic logic. Examples of applications of neutrosophic logic to physics are listed in the last section. Similar generalizations can be done for n-Valued Refined Neutrosophic Set, and respectively.

In this work, elements related to mental models elicitation and analysis are addressed through causal models. Issues related to the need to include indeterminacy in causal relationships through neutrophic cognitive maps are discussed. A proposal for static analysis in neutrosophic cognitive maps is presented. The following activities are included in the proposal: Calculate, measures of centrality, Classify nodes, De-neutrosification, and Ranking nodes. As future works, the incorporation of new metrics of centrality in neutrosophic cognitive maps is proposed. The inclusion of scenario analysis to the proposal is another area of future work.
