Practice Problem: At a small community hospital in Virginia, there is an absence of standardized screening processes for identifying intensive care unit (ICU) patients with unmet palliative care needs, contributing to delayed and unequitable access to palliative care consultations.

Problem: Dementia is rapidly increasing as the people of the world mature and life expectancy increases. As the world ages and the prevalence of dementia increases, nursing home placement will and is the most sought place for care of this population. Objective: The purpose of this evidence-based practice quality improvement project was to implement an educational intervention to improve pediatric palliative care services in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The goal was to improve nurses’ knowledge of palliative care and increase the number of palliative care consults.

Methods: Educational sessions were created using the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Pediatric Curriculum. Participants included 46 PICU nurses. Knowledge of palliative care was measured at three timepoints; pre-, immediately post- and four weeks post-intervention. Background: Home health is the fastest-growing healthcare setting in the country. Through Home Health Value-Based Purchasing (HHVBP), the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) provides incentives or penalties to HHAs based on outcomes. Hospitalization and emergency department use are weighted heaviest as poor outcomes. HHVBP requires HHAs to report on whether they are engaging in advance care planning (ACP) conversations. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure palliative care knowledge, attitudes, perceived empowerment, and familiarity of the Supportive Palliative Care Indicators Tool (SPICT) among critical care nurses and advanced practice providers (APPs) before and after viewing a web-based educational video on an adult medicine intensive care unit (MICU).

Methods: This study was a one group pre- and post- implementation assessment using a web-based educational video and electronic surveys. The population included critical care nurses and advanced practice providers (APPs). This study spanned the timeframe between January 2022 and March 2022.
