Improving Education On Routine Echocardiograms In Reducing Right Sided Heart Failure When Managing Vv- Ecmo Patients, Ashley Williams
DNP Projects
Background: Patients who are placed on veno- venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV- ECMO) are at high risk for developing right sided heart failure. An echocardiogram is essential for diagnostics and recovery in ECMO patients and should be a standard of care when managing this patient population. More research is needed to understand the effect of reducing right sided heart failure using routine echocardiograms. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate if there is a significant difference in outcomes of VV- ECMO patients who received routine echocardiograms compared to those who did not, and appropriately manage once RV dysfunction …

Utilizing Podcast Education To Improve Nurse Knowledge, Confidence, And Behaviors Related To Palliative Care Conversations In The Intensive Care Unit, Brittany Estridge
DNP Projects
Background: The personal connection that Registered Nurses (RNs) build with patients and their families puts them at the forefront of many conversations during the patient’s stay in the intensive care unit (ICU). Some of the most difficult conversations are related to palliative care (PC). It can be challenging to know how to respond to the complex questions posed in palliative care conversations (PCC) when patients and their caregivers are making decisions that will alter the course of the patient’s treatment, as well as affect the quality and length of their life.
Purpose: Nurses receive inadequate training in PCC. The purpose …
The Evaluation Of An Amino Acid- Oral Re-Hydration Solution (Enterade®) To Improve Quality Of Life In Solid Tumor Cancer Patients By Reduction Of Chemotherapy Related Diarrhea, Holly Chitwood
DNP Projects
Background: Chemotherapy related diarrhea (CRD) is a common adverse effect of many chemotherapy agents used to treat cancer. CRD negatively affects quality of life (QOL) for cancer patients and often results in treatment delays, hold, dose reductions, and hospitalizations affecting morbidity and mortality. Proper management of CRD with novel therapeutics is needed to improve the quality of life and patient outcomes for this population.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of a proprietary amino acid-oral rehydration solution (AA-ORS) known as Enterade® to reduce the severity of CRD, to improve patient reported QOL among patients over …
A Modified Screening Tool To Evaluate Risk Of Unanticipated Return Visits To The Emergency Department In The Geriatric Population, Tabitha Riley
A Modified Screening Tool To Evaluate Risk Of Unanticipated Return Visits To The Emergency Department In The Geriatric Population, Tabitha Riley
DNP Projects
Purpose: To compare the Modified Screening Tool for Identifying at Risk Seniors (mSTIRS) against the Triage Risk Screening Tool (TRST) and the Identification of Seniors at Risk (ISAR) for predictive value and assess the relationship between presenting complaint with unanticipated return visit (URV) occurrence in geriatric patients.
Design: A prospective, observational study conducted at a large academic medical center. Descriptive statistics and psychometric analyses were used to analyze the association between demographics, clinical data, and to evaluate the modified screening tool.
Methods: 38 geriatric participants in the Emergency Department (ED) were enrolled and 21 completed the study. The screening tools …
The Effect Of An American Heart Association Telephone Follow-Up Intervention On Knowledge And Self-Efficacy In Rural Heart Failure Patients, Haley Fuller
DNP Projects
Background: An increased national and local prevalence of heart failure fostered a review of the evidence to identify best practice interventions focusing on improving self-care and knowledge. Heart failure remains a leading cause of 30-day readmission in the United States and in Madisonville, Kentucky, the site of study. A review of the literature emphasized improving transitions from hospital to home with a multi-dimensional approach. Self-care and knowledge were identified as major determinants to adequately prepare a patient to manage this chronic disease. A pre- and post quasi experimental study was performed at a rural hospital in Kentucky. Objective: The goal …
