This quantitative research, utilizing an online methodology at a midwestern university, explored the prevalence of perceived stress, compassion satisfaction (CS), compassion fatigue (CF), burnout, and alexithymia among master’s level nursing students. More hospitals are eliminating the traditional 8 hour shift and replacing it with the 12 hour shift. The aim of this study was to review literature about the effects of shift length on nurses and patients. Cedarville University's OneSearch was used to collect the 12 articles reviewed. Some studies indicated nurses working 12 hour shifts were at a greater risk of experiencing burnout compared to nurses working 8 hour shifts. Nurses working 12 hour shifts were more likely to experience chronic fatigue related to inadequate amounts of sleep. PICO Question: In very low birth weight infants (VLBW), does the use of prophylactic probiotics decrease the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis?

Method: Databases searched include PubMed, Cochrane, Medline, ScienceDirect, UpToDate, and CINAHL databases, resulting in 10 relevant articles (four meta-analyses, two systematic reviews, three randomized controlled trials, and one cohort study).

Results: The review of literature concluded that overall there is a decrease in the incidence of NEC when VLBW infants are given prophylactic probiotics.

Recommendations: In conclusion, probiotics have shown efficacy in preventing NEC with no confirmed reports of adverse effects to VLBW infants. The final recommendation would be …
