Abstract

The birth of a baby can bring about an array of powerful emotions that range from joy and excitement to feelings of anxiety, worry, and depression. A majority of mothers experience postpartum baby blues which normally begins 2-3 days after delivery and can last for up to 2-3 weeks, but some mothers experience a more severe form known as postpartum depression (PPD). PPD can be mistaken for baby blues at first, but the signs and symptoms do not diminish and can continue to worsen. The increased use of interactive voice response (IVR) in assessing patient and family experience should be paired with evidence-based practices on how to obtain the most accurate information via this survey mode. We added a brief clarification sentence of the survey scale at the start of the IVR call to improve our experience data both qualitatively and quantitatively. Our setting was an urban pediatric hospital. We gathered lived experiences from our patients, families, and providers to understand and design a change to the IVR survey mode that would reduce survey inaccuracies. Background: Children’s High Acuity Monitoring Program (CHAMP®) is a software platform for pediatric remote patient monitoring. It is used with a proactive, personalized, pediatric care model providing a link for communication with a specialized healthcare team to patients and families in their homes. Successful implementation since 2014 includes: adoption at 12 pediatric hospitals and over 870 infants with a survival of 96.5% (down from 20% in 2012). This work led our team to engage leadership to discuss a remote patient monitoring department with new monitoring devices and expanded access to pediatric conditions.

Background: Hospitalizations represent a significant driver of healthcare costs for children. Little is known about how payor type and the severity of children cared for on the pediatric medical inpatient floor impact a hospital’s financial outcomes.

Objectives/Goal: The primary objective of this study is to compare financial outcomes of pediatric hospitalizations to the medical inpatient floor across patient severity quartiles. Secondary objectives included financial outcomes stratified by payor type across severity quartiles.

Over-prescription of pain medication has led to an opioid epidemic in the United States. Many factors can contribute to the amount of pain medication prescribed to patients. The amount of pain medication prescribed to patients is affected by many factors and previous research has shown:

• Men are prescribed more than women
• Whites more than non-whites
• English-speaking more than non-English-speaking

The goal of the study was to look at whether this held true in a pediatric orthopedic population. We also looked at the trends in opiate prescribing over time.

Background: The Virchow’s Triad principles of venous stasis, endothelial damage, and hypercoagulability are all features of malignancy and contribute to the increased risk venous thromboembolism (VTE) seen in oncology patients. Additionally, certain chemotherapy treatments, presence of a central venous catheter and immobility are also intrinsically associated with malignancy diagnoses and exacerbate this risk. However, much debate exists over the use of thromboprophylaxis in the pediatric population, primarily due to lack of evidence regarding safety and efficacy, primarily the risk of major bleeding. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a metabolic disorder that results in accumulation of the amino acid, phenylalanine, throughout the body. This can result in neurocognitive complications if individuals with this disease do not follow a low-protein diet. Camp PHEver is a weeklong summer camp that gives children with PKU an opportunity to obtain skills related to diet compliance, but also enhance their confidence, relationship development, and independence. This, combined with unique financial challenges of their long-term stay, may predispose caregivers to food insecurity (FI). FI among caregivers has far reaching implications for the health of infants who are already vulnerable related to comorbidities from their NICU stay.

This mixed-methods study investigated the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFACs) within children’s hospitals in the United States. Specifically, the study sought to understand how PFACs adapted operations as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, how patient and family advisors (PFAs) were engaged in the response to COVID-19, and the intersection of the COVID-19 pandemic with PFAC diversity, equity, and inclusion. The study consisted of a survey distributed to 228 children’s hospitals, with a 73% response rate, and in-depth interviews with selected survey respondents (n=12). A phlebotomist’s words and actions play a crucial role in success of a blood draw and in providing a supportive patient experience. This study examined use of comfort measures during a pediatric blood draw. The phlebotomist’s use of soft words, positioning, distraction, coaching/support were observed with sixty children between 3-14 years of age during a blood draw. The level of fear /anxiety before and during the blood draw was recorded by an RA. The child’s level of fear/anxiety was observed and reported by the parent/caregiver after the procedure. Childhood obesity has been a worldwide concern, but has disproportionately affected the socioeconomically disadvantaged, racial/ethical minorities, and rural children. The presence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) contributed to social and health problems.
