Former Children’s Mercy CEO Rand O’Donnell, PhD, and his wife, Melva, are establishing an endowed chair position that will be awarded to Ahmed Abdelmoity, MD, FAAP, Division Director of Child Neurology, Section Chief of Epilepsy and Neurophysiology. Dr. Abdelmoity will become our 31st endowed chair at Children’s Mercy.

Upon his retirement, CEO Dr. O'Donnell looked back on a transformative 25 years of Children's Mercy history and learned that 23rd Street on the hospital's Adele Hall Campus had been renamed O'Donnell way. The attached slide show remembers some moments from his time at Children's Mercy. In response to the growing epidemic of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) have been rapidly implemented in the United States (US). This study examines the prevalence of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) seven core elements of a successful ASP within a large subset of US Children’s Hospitals. In 2016, a survey was conducted of 52 pediatric hospitals assessing the presence of the seven core elements: leadership commitment, accountability, drug expertise, action, tracking, reporting, and education. 'The Heart of Children's Mercy' garners hospital's second trophy for programming excellence.

Once again, Inside Pediatrics has been recognized with a prestigious Emmy award for outstanding programming by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. At the awards event Saturday night, the fifth episode (titled “The Heart of Children’s Mercy”) of the show’s second season won for Best Public/Current/Community Affairs Program or Special.

Last year, Season 1 of Inside Pediatrics won an Emmy in the same category.

OBJECTIVES: Changes in health care delivery and graduate medical education have important consequences for the workforce in pediatric emergency medicine (PEM). This study compared career preparation and potential attrition of the PEM workforce with the prior assessment from 1998.

METHODS: An e-mail survey was sent to members of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on EM and to non-AAP members board certified in PEM. Information on demographics, practice characteristics and professional activities, career preparation, future plans, and burnout (using two validated screening questions) was analyzed using standard descriptive statistics.

Approximately, one-third of patients with epilepsy are refractory to pharmacological treatment which mandates extensive medical care and imposes significant economic burden on patients and their societies. This study intends to assess the impact of the treatment with ketogenic diet (KD) on reducing seizure-related emergency room visits and hospitalizations in children with refractory epilepsy. Methods. This is a retrospective review of children treated with the KD in one tertiary center. OBJECTIVES: Study objectives included addressing overuse of Clostridium difficile laboratory testing by decreasing submission rates of nondiarrheal stool specimens and specimens from children ≤12 months of age and determining resultant patient and laboratory cost savings associated with decreased testing.

METHODS: A multifaceted initiative was developed, and components included multiple provider education methods, computerized order entry modifications, and automatic declination from laboratory on testing stool specimens of nondiarrheal consistency and from children ≤12 months old. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is an increased odds of mortality among trauma patients treated at hospitals with higher proportions of minority patients (ie, black and Hispanic patients combined).

DESIGN: Hospitals were categorized on the basis of the percentage of minority patients admitted with trauma. The adjusted odds of in-hospital mortality were compared between hospitals with less than 25% of patients who were minorities (the reference group) and hospitals with 25% to 50% of patients who were minorities and hospitals with more than 50% of patients who were minorities.
