Additive Vs. Subtractive Manufacturing In Dental Laboratory Technology, Aneeza Hussain

Publications and Research

Have you seen technicians using milling and 3d printing machines yet? The development of computer-aided manufacturing and the medical application of this industrial technology have provided an alternative way of fabricating oral and facial prostheses. This narrative review aims to evaluate the different streams of computer-aided manufacturing in dental technology. To date, there are two streams: the subtractive and the additive approaches. The differences reside in the processing protocols, materials used, and their respective accuracy. In general, there is a tendency for the subtractive method to provide more homogeneous objects with acceptable accuracy that may be more suitable for the …

Catechol-Containing Copolymers As An Active Ingredient For Denture Adhesives, Vincent Ying Wun Kong Apr 2021

Catechol-Containing Copolymers As An Active Ingredient For Denture Adhesives, Vincent Ying Wun Kong

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Moisture inside the mouth adds challenge to making denture adhesives formulations. Some formulations have zinc to enhance adhesion on wet skin despite knowing the health hazards. Inspired by mussel foot proteins’ catechol unit’s strong underwater adhesion, nine catechol-containing copolymers (P1A-P3C) were synthesized by free radical polymerization of 3,4-dimethoxystyrene (3,4- DMS) with different styrene derivatives followed by deprotection. P1A-P3C were used to make Fn(P)-C-PBS denture adhesive formulations which had suitable shear stresses around ≥ 5 kPa satisfying ISO 10873. In-situ NMR studies of free radical polymerization of 3,4 - DMS and styrene derivatives allowed computation of their reactivity ratios showing all …

Characterization Of Dental Pulp Stem Cell Responses To Functional Biomaterials Including Mineralized Trioxide Aggregates, Sejin Bae, Bueonguk Kang, Hyungbin Lee, Harrison Luu, Eric Mullins, Karl Kingsley

Dental Medicine Faculty Publications

Introduction: Many studies in stem cell biology have demonstrated that dental pulp stem cells (DPSC) may be highly proliferative and capable of pluripotent differentiation into many different tissue types. Recent advances in stem cell research have outlined methods for directing in vitro or in vivo growth, viability, and proliferation, as well as differentiation of DPSC-although much remains to be discovered. Based upon this information, the primary objective of this study was to understand the functional biomaterials needed to more effectively direct DPSC viability, growth, and proliferation. Methods: Using an approved protocol, previously collected and isolated samples of DPSC from an …

A Critical Review And Finite Element Study Of Structural Relaxation In Veneered 3y-Tzp Dental Structures, Prashant S. Shelar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Yttria stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal (3Y-TZP) materials veneered with porcelain are preferred for clinical practice due to their bio-functionality, biocompatibility, and affordability. However, these materials are often subjected to premature clinical failures due to combination of subsurface flaws and tensile stresses within porcelains. This work focuses on performing a critical literature review and evaluating veneer characteristics, i.e. structural relaxation, to form a suitable explanation for the development of subsurface stresses. User material subroutines, UEXPAN and UTRS are developed, validated and integrated in ABAQUS finite element solver. With the use of validated models, it is shown that faster cooling rates and …
