In the present work, the biocompatibility of orthodontic devices was tested by the propagation of human osteoblasts. A different methodological approach was applied. Since the materials used in human and veterinary orthodontics (not in implantology) had been tested, osteoblasts were not implanted on the surface of the biomaterial, but have been cultured in the medium containing the products of corrosion. In the present work, osteoblasts were propagated in the medium spiked with Ni(II) salt versus the control. Osteoblast cells (live, dead, and total) were counted under light microscope. The statistical significance of the differences between the experimental and control groups …

Oral Abscess Associated With Cranial Tooth Loss In Green Iguana (Iguana Iguana), Tzvetan Chaprazov, Rosen Dimitrov, Kamelia Stamatova Yovcheva

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to describe the morphology and results of treatment of an iguana’s oral abscess. A case of unilateral oral abscesses with tooth loss in a male green iguana (Iguana iguana) was presented. Gingival necrosis and a pocket of caseous yellow-gray pus were visible in the soft tissues. Some cranial teeth were found loose within the necrotic tissue. Radiographic study showed decreased bone density. Treatment of the abscess involved opening up the pus-filled abscess and manually cleaning it out. The bacteriology confirmed a culture of Pseudomonas aeruginosa sensitive to enrofloxacin, gentamicin, and chloramphenicol.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of chronic fluorosis on trace elements and vitamin levels in goats. Thirty-three goats exhibiting clinical signs of chronic fluorosis and 10 healthy goats from the same region were used. Animals with chronic fluorosis were divided into 2 groups according to their age as 1-3 years old and 4-6 years old. Blood samples were collected from all goats. Fluoride concentrations were determined with an ionometer. Na, K, and Cl levels were measured with ion-selective equipment and serum mineral substance levels were obtained by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Ca, Mg, and P levels were determined …

The case of a 3.5-year-old male Norwegian Elkhound crossbreed dog, seen the day after a traffic accident, is reported. Fractures in the symphysis mandibulae and the right corpus mandibulae were diagnosed. The apex linguae hung down laterally; a 2-cm cut wound was present on the right side. Two more cut wounds (6 cm long on the ventral surface and 3 cm long on the dorsal aspect) of the tongue in a direction oblique to its long axis were connected by a cut through the entire thickness of the tongue. Tooth 103 was broken at the gingival line and 104 under …
