Present And Future Perspectives On The Use Of Free Or Encapsulated Pancreatic Islet Cell Transplantation As A Treatment Of Pregnancy Complicated By Type 1 Diabetes, Stephen Hunter
Stephen K. Hunter
Pregnancies complicated by insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) pose significant health risks to both the mother and her developing fetus. Congenital malformations in the offspring of diabetic mothers have an incidence which is 2-5 times that seen in the background. Euglycemia in the first trimester of pregnancy can reduce this incidence, but achieving euglycemia with conventional exogenous insulin therapy is both costly and difficult. Even with intense insulin dosage adjustments, the blood glucose profile of the diabetic pregnant patient does not mimic that seen in nondiabetic patients. Both the difficulties and inadequacies of conventional therapy for IDDM-complicated pregnancy provide a stimulus …
The Effect Of Nerve Growth Factor (Ngf) Incorporation Into Swine Intestinal Submucosa (Sis) Suture Material On The Healing Process In Gastrocnemius Muscle, Nicole K. Alexander
The Effect Of Nerve Growth Factor (Ngf) Incorporation Into Swine Intestinal Submucosa (Sis) Suture Material On The Healing Process In Gastrocnemius Muscle, Nicole K. Alexander
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
The repair of gastrocnemius muscle incisions were evaluated histologically in a rat model. Comparisons were made between carbon dioxide laser and scalpel incisions closed with sutures prepared from Swine Intestinal Submucosa (SIS) with and without added Nerve Growth Factor. This study was conducted in conjunction with two other studies, one comparing epidermal repair and the other comparing kinesthetic changes post-operatively in the same animal model. Thirty-five days post-surgery the animals were euthanized and an area of muscular tissue encompassing the operative site was excised and evaluated microscopically for the following: presence of macrophages, integrity of the muscle, leukocytes present within …

In vivo gene transfer to the ischemic heart via electroporation holds promise as a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of heart disease. In the current study, we investigated the use of in vivo electroporation for gene transfer using three different penetrating electrodes and one non-penetrating electrode. The hearts of adult male swine were exposed through a sternotomy. Eight electric pulses synchronized to the rising phase of the R wave of the electrocardiogram were administered at varying pulse widths and field strengths following an injection of either a plasmid encoding luciferase or one encoding green fluorescent protein. Four sites on …
