Black And White Health Disparities: Racial Bias In American Healthcare, Yasmeen Almomani

Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections

This paper explores the historical implications of race in American society that have led to implicit racism in the healthcare system. Racial bias in healthcare against Black people is a factor in the health disparities between Black and white people in America, such as the gap in life expectancy, infant death, and maternal mortality. Black people are more likely to report racial discrimination from healthcare providers, which is a reason for the decreased quality of care received. The past justifications of slavery, the Tuskegee syphilis study, and the medical experimentations on Black women are horrifying but were considered acceptable in …

Illuminating Health Disparities: The Untold Story Of Black Women’S Pregnancies, Kacy Workman

Osmosis Magazine

Recent studies have found that Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than White women. Researchers in the 1990s examined data surrounding specific pregnancy complications such as postpartum hemorrhage, finding that although prevalence rates were similar between White and Black women, Black women with these conditions were 2-3 times more likely to die than their White counterparts. Despite medical advances, these rates have not improved over time. Data analyses examining maternal mortality from 2005 – 2014 reveal that mortality rates for Black women have actually increased from 39 to 49 deaths for every 100,000 live …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

To identify metabolic indicators in blood and urine for early pregnancy in dairy cows (32 crossbred and 12 purebred zebu cows), blood and urine samples were collected on days 0, 15, 20, 24, and 30 postbreeding. The plasma progesterone (P4) concentration was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in pregnant cows than in nonpregnant cows after day 15. The plasma blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration remained significantly (P < 0.05) higher in pregnant cows on day 15. The plasma concentrations of cholesterol, glucose, protein, and nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) did not differ between pregnant and nonpregnant cows. The urine protein concentration was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in pregnant zebu cows compared to nonpregnant zebu cows. Plasma P4 was significantly (P < 0.001) and positively associated with urine glucose levels in nonpregnant crossbred cows. In nonpregnant zebu cows, the correlation between P4 was positive (P < 0.05) with plasma cholesterol, glucose, urine glucose, and protein. In pregnant zebu cows, P4 was negatively associated with plasma BUN and positively (P < 0.05) associated with both plasma and urine glucose levels. Thus, urinary proteins can be used as a noninvasive tool for early nonpregnancy confirmation in cows with very high accuracy at around 24 days after artificial insemination.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study some blood parameters and the effects of age, sex, housing system and pregnancy of Tuj sheep that have been bred in the Kars region of Turkey were researched and compared. The various blood parameters including the amount of haemoglobin, haematocrit value, erythrocyte and leukocyte count, and the differential percentage of white blood cells were determined from blood taken intravenously. The haemoglobin and erythrocyte values were found to be significantly (p < 0.05) higher in 5-7-month-old Tuj sheep grazing in an open field than in 2-3-month-old male Tuj sheep feeding in a closed system. The erythrocyte count was found to be higher in 2-3-month-old female Tuj sheep in comparison to males. The haemoglobin, leukocyte and haematocrit values were also higher in this group of animals, though this was not statistically significant. The erythrocyte, leukocyte, haemoglobin, haematocrit values and differential percentage of white blood cells were not different in 5-7-month-old male and female Tuj sheep grazing in an open area. The erythrocyte number decreased after parturition in respect to the oestrus and pregnancy period. This decrease was statistically significant. The erythrocyte values were 10.2 x 10^6 /mm^3 before oestrus, 9.5 x 10^6 /mm3 during pregnancy and 8.2 x 10^6 /mm^3 after parturition. The haemoglobin value decreased significantly (p < 0.05) during pregnancy. The leukocyte number was found to be less during pregnancy in comparison to other periods; it was 7.7 ± 1.9 x 10^3 /mm^3 during pregnancy, 9.3 ± 1.9 x 10^3 /mm^3 before oestrus, and 9.7 ± 2.5 x 10^3 /mm^3 after parturation. The lymphocyte percentage increased significantly (p < 0.05) during the pregnancy period.

The light microscopic and ultrastructural changes observed in the single kidney of pregnant rats were detected during mid-term pregnancy and after parturition and the results were compared with those of the pure nephrectomized group. The experimental studies were performed on 24 female virgin rats and all of them were subjected to unilateral nephrectomy. No pathology was observed in the light microscopic examination of the kidneys of the groups. In the transmission electron microscopic examination, in the pure nephrectomized group, cell swellings were present in the endothelial cells of the interlobular arteries and arterioles. Additionally, a mild cell swelling was seen …

This study was performed to determine the relationship between the corpus luteum weight/diameter, follicular diameter and the levels of vitamin C, progesterone and oestradiol 17-\beta of the plasma, corpus luteum and follicular fluid of pregnant Holstein cows in a slaughterhouse. Progesterone and oestradiol 17-\beta concentrations were determined by the microtitration plate EIA method. Vitamin C levels were determined by spectrophotometer. Although there was a positive correlation between follicular fluid oestradiol 17-\beta levels and the follicle diameter in the follicular fluid, in contrast to oestradiol 17-\beta levels, small follicles have higher progesterone content than large follicles. This negative correlation was due …
