Obesity in dogs is increasingly present in the veterinary practice. In humans, it is known that there is a significant correlation between obesity and the development of hypertension and insulin resistance (IR), a clinical picture called metabolic syndrome. In dogs, however, there are only anecdotes about the syndrome. The objectives of this study were to determine serum levels of adiponectin, leptin, triglycerides, cholesterol, insulin, glucose, homeostasis assessment of B cell function (HOMA-B), homeostasis assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and systolic blood pressure (SBP) in dogs with different body conditions (BC) and body fat (BF) without endocrine disease. For this purpose, …

Assessment Of Asymmetric Dimethyl Arginine, Cardiac Troponin I, Thyroxine, Cholesterol, And Triglyceride Levels In Obese Dogs And Dogs With Normal Body Condition, Hüseyi̇n Ci̇han, Merve Tural

The aim of this study was to assess serum asymmetric dimethyl arginine (ADMA), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), thyroxine (T4), cholesterol and triglyceride (TG) levels in dogs with normal body condition and obese dogs. A total of 40 dogs (n = 40) were included in the study and dogs were divided into two groups; 20 dogs with normal body condition and 20 obese dogs. The dogs were grouped according to the five-point body-condition scoring (BCS) system. Serum ADMA, cTnI, T4, cholesterol, and TG levels were measured in addition to routine biochemical parameters. Serum ADMA, cTnI, TG, and cholesterol levels were statistically …
Overall Prevalence Of Feline Overweight/Obesity In Japan As Determined Froma Cross-Sectional Sample Pool Of Healthy Veterinary Clinic-Visiting Cats In Japan, Nobuko Mori, Eiji Iwasaki, Yuki Okada, Koh Kawasumi, Toshiro Arai

Many veterinarians feel that feline obesity is increasing in prevalence within Japan, but are unsure as to what real rate of obesity prevalence exists currently. The objectives of this study are twofold. First, we sought to determine the ratio of overweight/obese cats, as determined via body condition score (BCS), based on a cross-sectional pool of healthy cats. Second, using a uniform method of biochemical measurement for cat plasma collected all over Japan, we sought to construct cross-sectional working reference ranges of plasma metabolites using age, BCS, and sex as classifying factors. Overall, the rate of overweight and obese cats (BCS …
