Implementation And Evaluation Of A Structured Mentorship Program, Cary Bedinghaus, Caroline Hillman
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
The project addresses mentorship in a graduate nursing anesthesia program. The goal is to improve the existing mentorship program and to implement a durable and consistent system that gathers and responds to feedback from the students. Two literature reviews form the underpinnings of the structure and evaluation components of the project. Three structural components were identified in the review as highly effective in multiple studies of diverse mentorship programs. The first component is establishing an effective dyad matching scheme. The second component is establishing clear goals. The third component is maintaining the relationship and achieving goals through frequent and consistent …
Implementation Of A Protocol To Improve The Intake Assessment And Treatment With Suboxone Among Patients’ Dependent On Opioids On Two Mental Health Crisis Units, Maeghan Dillon
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract
Background: In 2021,106,699 people died from a drug overdose and of these deaths, over 75% were related to illicit or prescription opioids (Centers for Disease Control, 2023). At two in-patient community crisis stabilization units for psychiatric care, many patients have a comorbid diagnosis of a substance use disorder and another mental illness. Treatment with Buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone) is associated with decreased opioid overdoses and related deaths; however, Suboxone inductions have not been a part of admission treatment.
Methods: This quality improvement (QI) project initiated a Suboxone protocol for eligible patients on two crisis in-patient stabilization units. The outcomes …
Communication Assessment Tools For Emergency Department Nurses Who Interact With Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Holly Hunt
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract/Executive Summary
Problem Statement: Communication is an essential part of every nurse-patient interaction. During the best of times the patient and nurse can clearly understand each other and engage in successful interaction with positive patient outcomes. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often use nontraditional ways of communicating that can complicate the ideal nurse-patient interaction. When a patient presents with a different method of communicating, the nurse must possess tools available to facilitate a successful interaction. Identifying such a tool or if one cannot be found building a sample tool is vital for positive patient outcomes for individuals with …
Evaluating The Use And Effectiveness Of Digital Mental Health Resources For Acute Care Nurses, Ashley M. Turbyfill
Evaluating The Use And Effectiveness Of Digital Mental Health Resources For Acute Care Nurses, Ashley M. Turbyfill
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Statement: The burnout phenomenon has been exacerbated over the last almost two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic (Maunder et al., 2021). Healthcare organizations must respond by implementing evidenced-based mental health initiatives to increase staff coping skills to reduce stress and emotional exhaustion (Galanis et al., 2021). While the project organization can access large-scale aggregate data about resource usage and its overall mental well-being, they cannot assess what percentage of users are nurses and the personal impact on their mental well-being. Due to these limitations, the organization cannot gauge how the nursing staff uses and responds to offered resources. …

Evidence Based Practice Strategies: Using Price Lists And Peer Coaching To Improve Medication Cost Containment And Documentation Practices In Anesthesia Providers At An Urban Level One Trauma Center, Abigalle Ryan Sparrow
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) guidelines for Documenting Anesthesia Care Practice and Policy Considerations, anesthesia provider documentation represents a detailed account of the patient’s anesthesia care during various phases of anesthesia during their hospital stay (Documenting Anesthesia Care: Practice and Policy Considerations, 2016). The primary purpose of anesthesia documentation is to capture accurate and comprehensive information communicating a patient’s anesthetic experience, which includes the documentation of all administered medications. The patient’s electronic or written medical record is a legal document, which is also referenced for reimbursement, quality improvement, and review by external organizations for …
Sedation Assessment And Management In The Intensive Care Unit, Kimberly Dyer, Courtney Garvey
Sedation Assessment And Management In The Intensive Care Unit, Kimberly Dyer, Courtney Garvey
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Nursing management of sedation medications in critical care patients is a complex responsibility, and studies have shown that proper use of sedation protocols can lead to improved patient outcomes. A knowledge gap among critical care nurses in the performance of Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS) assessments was identified within a critical care unit during the 2019 annual skills day. Inaccurate RASS assessments may lead to inaccurate sedation management according to the current unit protocol and evidence from the literature, and therefore may impact patient outcomes. This project aims to improve a clinical practice within an intensive care unit. The objective …
The Effects Of Debriefing On Nurse Distress After Perinatal Loss, Russin Marie Kelly
The Effects Of Debriefing On Nurse Distress After Perinatal Loss, Russin Marie Kelly
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Labor and delivery nurses are the first-line caregivers for women suffering a perinatal loss which involves miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant death. This loss of life can cause nurses’ distress. This project proposes using the PEARLS healthcare debriefing tool as an intervention to decrease distress and improve nurse satisfaction. Before and after the debriefing intervention, a survey allowed the nurse to rate their distress from zero to ten using the distress thermometer and answer questions about job satisfaction. The data analyzed shows that the debriefing intervention decreased nurse distress after perinatal loss compared to the prior practice of no debriefing after …

Nursing Perception Of Psychogenic Nonepileptic Spells: Improving Patient Outcomes, Amanda J. Cramer
Nursing Perception Of Psychogenic Nonepileptic Spells: Improving Patient Outcomes, Amanda J. Cramer
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Patients with psychogenic nonepileptic spells (PNES) have generally poor outcomes and many fail to engage in evidence-based treatments (Thompson et al., 2013). Negative healthcare provider perceptions have been implicated as a barrier to patient engagement in treatment recommendations for PNES (Whitehead, Kandler, & Reuber, 2013; Worsely et al., 2011). Illness perception of these patients has been evaluated from the perspective of physicians in multiple settings but perceptions by nurses are not well studied despite the close interactions that nurses have with these patients.
This project used Pender’s health promotion model to collect information about the nursing experience with patients with …
Implementation Of Educational Program For Nurses To Improve Knowledge And Use Of Discharge Planning Best Practices, Eric C. Snyder
Implementation Of Educational Program For Nurses To Improve Knowledge And Use Of Discharge Planning Best Practices, Eric C. Snyder
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract
Problem Statement: The frequency and severity of hospital post-discharge events has become a national problem. The increase in readmission rates post-discharge has a negative impact on the patients overall morbidity and increases healthcare costs (Jack, 2012). Non-comprehensive discharge planning contributes to post-discharge events such as less than 30-day readmissions (Jack, 2012). Best practices for discharge planning should be utilized.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to evaluate the impact of Project Re-engineering Discharge (RED) education to increase nurses' knowledge and use of best practices on discharge planning. An adapted Project RED educational intervention, using Knowles' adult learning …

Diabetes mellitus affects millions of people in the United States, placing them at risk for other disease related complications. This makes the management of diabetes and the prevention of complications an important challenge. The psychological aspect of diabetes care may present a barrier to patients that inhibit them from achieving optimal self-care.
Diabetes distress (DD) is the psychological aspect of diabetes that is specific to the emotional distress caused from living a chronic disease. DD has been linked to poorer self-management behaviors which makes it a significant problem that should be taken into consideration for effective management of the diabetic …
