Redesigning Nursing Education To Build Healthier Communities: An Innovative Cross-Sector Collaboration., Beth Ann Swan, Peggy Hilden, Nikki West, Garrett Chan, Kathryn Shaffer, Judith G Berg, Mary Dickow, Deloras Jones

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

Today's health care environment requires registered nurses to be prepared for an array of practice settings, providing care outside the hospital and directly in the community. There is increasing focus on wellness, prevention, access to care, and mental health services for an aging and more diverse population. To improve alignment of education with increasingly complex needs, donor-advised funding supported four prelicensure nursing schools to transform their curricula. Selected schools were guided through a curriculum redesign process emphasizing community and continuum of care. This innovation was consistent with meeting challenges to realize the Institute of Medicine's 2011 Future of Nursing recommendations.

Take home point: It is important to remember that the diagnosis of FS may be masked in patients who present with infection, since active bacterial infection raises the WBC count to normal or slightly elevated – the neutropenia reappears shortly after successful treatment (Kay, 2017).

Rural Hospital Nursing Skill Mix And Work Environment Associated With Frequency Of Adverse Events., Jessica G. Smith, Colin M. Plover, Moira C. Mcchesney, Eileen T. Lake

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Introduction: Though rural hospitals serve about one fifth of the United States (U.S.), few studies have investigated relationships among nursing resources and rural hospital adverse events.

Objectives: The purpose was to determine relationships among nursing skill mix (proportion of Registered Nurses (RNs) to all nursing staff), the work environment and adverse events (medication errors, patient falls with injury, pressure ulcers, and urinary tract infections) in rural hospitals.

Methods: Using a cross-sectional design, nurse survey data from a large study examining nurse organizational factors, patient safety, and quality from four U.S. states were linked to the 2006 American Hospital Association data. …

Optimizing Strategies For Care Coordination And Transition Management: Recommendations For Nursing Education, Beth Ann Swan, Regina Conway-Phillips, Sheila Haas, Laura De La Pena

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore nurse and healthcare leaders' experiences and perceptions of care coordination and transition management (CCTM®). Four barriers emerged that added insight into the lack of adopting and integrating CCTM knowledge, skills, and attitudes in nursing education in the following categories: curriculum redesign, silos of care settings and care providers, knowledge gap, and faculty development/resistance. Recommendations and implications for education, for both nursing students and practicing nurses, are described.

Concept-based curricula are being implemented in nursing education as a means to shift the emphasis from content to an emphasis on concepts and conceptual learning (Giddens & Brady, 2007). This paradigm shift requires concomitant changes in how faculty teach and how students learn. In concept-based curricula, teachers use student-centered learning activities, such as case studies, questions, or problems to engage students in active learning (Giddens, Caputi, & Rodgers, 2015).

Prisons As Learning Environments For Nursing And Public Health Practice, Mary Bouchaud, Phd, Rn, Madeline Brooks Sep 2017

Prisons As Learning Environments For Nursing And Public Health Practice, Mary Bouchaud, Phd, Rn, Madeline Brooks

College of Nursing Posters

Background:

Challenges in Securing Community Nursing Rotation Sites Eighteen years of providing clinical placement for Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students has demonstrated that community-based educational opportunities are shrinking due to:

•Increased regulatory requirements

•Competing numbers of nursing schools

•Increasing student enrollment

•Decreasing availability of community resources capable and willing to precept students

These issues present challenges to preparing students for nursing practice. A college of nursing at an urban, academic health center found a solution by working with unexpected partners – maximum security prisons and juvenile detention centers.

A Novel Solution: Partnerships with Prisons

Several factors make prisons …

Utilization Of Care By Infants With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome In Delaware, Michele K. Savin, Msn, Nnp-Bc Aug 2017

Utilization Of Care By Infants With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome In Delaware, Michele K. Savin, Msn, Nnp-Bc

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

From 1999-2013, the nationwide incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) due to maternal drug use rose from 1.5/1000 to 6/1000 hospital births. There is a dearth of information regarding what happens to these children when they are discharged. The purpose of this Practice Inquiry Project is to utilize existing Delaware Medicaid data to retrospectively explore the utilization of services and gaps in care for the infant with NAS in the first year of life. Key findings include less than expected well child visits and immunizations along with higher hospital re-admission rates. This represents missed opportunities for care, also demonstrating the …

Leveraging National Reports To Transform Ambulatory Care Practice, Anne T. Jessie, Beth Ann Swan

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

  • Multiple national reports identify actionable recommendations to transform education and practice to meet the needs of health care and healthcare delivery beyond the hospital walls.
  • The Josiah Macy Jr. Conference (2016) focused on transforming primary care and changing healthcare culture to support expansion of roles for registered nurses (RNs).
  • Partnerships between academia and clinical practice are critical to expanding learning opportunities beyond traditional acute care settings.
  • Development of primary care expertise in nursing faculty and adjunct faculty, in collaboration with primary care and ambulatory care nursing leaders, is essential.
  • Academic-practice partnerships must advocate for removing regulatory and practice barriers to …

Neonatal Implications Of Substance Use Treatment During Pregnancy, Michele K. Savin, Msn, Nnp-Bc Apr 2017

Neonatal Implications Of Substance Use Treatment During Pregnancy, Michele K. Savin, Msn, Nnp-Bc

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

I am writing in response to “Pharmacologic Treatment of Opioid Addiction During Pregnancy” by Keough and Fantasia (2017). The article nicely compares and summarizes the use of methadone and buprenorphine to treat substance use in pregnant women. I was dismayed, however, by the sections regarding neonatal considerations and breastfeeding, which contained some problematic assertions and some inaccurate conclusions.

College of Nursing Posters

Background:

The focus on traditional acute, hospital-based health care is being replaced with a new paradigm aimed at providing primary care, care of populations, and care across transitions and providers. As changes unfold, nursing education is challenged to prepare graduates who can effectively function in new healthcare environments of the 21st century. In response, the Jefferson College of Nursing (JCN) embarked on the ambitious task of designing a new 21st century baccalaureate nursing curriculum over a 13-month period. Although a 13-month turnaround time for curriculum design is unprecedented, what is most unique about JCN’s initiative is that it began with …
