Problem According to Children’s Hospital A's incident reporting system, 50% of problems related to prolonged intravenous antibiotics were classified as administration issues. When mistakes are made in this process, the antibiotic is then delivered at the wrong rate or the wrong time, which is problematic. Additionally, findings from a needs assessment survey highlight a critical need for targeted interventions, such as an educational video, to reduce administration errors associated with prolonged IV antibiotics. The purpose of this 14-week capstone project was to explore the impact of a peer-mediated art program on the social and occupational experiences of students with disabilities. This program was designed and implemented to promote inclusion of students with disabilities by providing an opportunity to interact with typically developing peers within their school-context. Introduction: Down syndrome is a congenital disorder caused by a total or partial trisomy of chromosome 21 and is considered the most common genetic cause of congenital malformations and intellectual disability. The objective of this study was to describe the cytogenetic alterations of patients with Down syndrome and their relationship with maternal age. Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive-analytical study. 436 patients with Down syndrome admitted to the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño during the 2017-2019 period were included. This experiment asked how central nervous system (CNS) viral-infections affect the development of synapses in the pediatric brain during infection and post-infection. Synaptogenesis is at its peak in pediatric mice (10 days old) and we hypothesized that a neurotropic infection could disrupt synaptic proteins. BACKGROUND: Pediatric allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (allo-HCT) recipients are at risk for morbidity and mortality from human adenovirus (HAdV). HAdV can be detected in an asymptomatic state, referred to as infection or with signs or symptoms of illness, referred to as disease. Standardized case definitions are needed to distinguish infection from disease and allow for consistent reporting in both observational cohort studies and therapeutic clinical trials.

Extracellular vesicles in human milk are critical in supporting newborn growth and development. Bioavailability of dietary extracellular vesicles may depend on the composition of membrane lipids. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the fatty acid desaturase gene cluster impact the content of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in human milk phospholipids. This study investigated the relation between variation in FADS1 and FADS2 with the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in extracellular vesicles from human milk.

Aim: The objective of the study was to evaluate the quality of life in Kenyan children (age 4–18 years) with cerebral palsy (CP).

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. Children with CP were recruited from the pediatric clinics at the Aga Khan hospital Nairobi (AKUHN). Parent proxy-reports using CPQoL-child and CPQoL-adolescents were obtained. Clinical and demographic data were compiled from medical records and parent interviews. A Likert scale was utilized to determine QoL across several domains.

The Severity-of-Illness Score for Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SCORTEN) is a scoring system that seeks to predict in-hospital mortality for disorders affecting skin integrity. The scoring system has been validated and widely utilized in adults, but not pediatrics. This study aims to determine the accuracy of the SCORTEN in pediatrics.

Methods

A retrospective review of pediatric patients admitted at a verified pediatric burn center with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SJS/TEN) from 2008 to 2022 was performed.

Hydrocephalus causes neurological effects and high intracranial pressure (ICP) in the pediatric condition. Studies observing the relationship between ICP and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production in an electrical resistance model have been performed, but less has been done to define this relationship in living organisms. This study explored CSF flow dynamics as a consequence of hydrocephalus severity utilizing a novel model.

Vaccine hesitancy among youth with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was evaluated to determine if the pandemic affected vaccine acceptance. A retrospective chart review was conducted to analyze vaccine rates over a five-year (pre-post COVID) in one university-based clinic. Results indicated a variation in acceptance rates between vaccines, with the MenACWY, MenB, tetanus, and HPV having the highest acceptance rates and COVID-19 and annual flu vaccine having the lowest acceptance rates. Vaccine hesitancy did not correlate with HIV treatment hesitancy nor with aversion to needles. Negative messaging around vaccines from a variety of sources appeared to be the primary factor in …
