BACKGROUND: Donor blood transfusion may potentially affect transplant outcomes through an inflammatory response, recipient sensitization, or transmission of infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of donor blood transfusion with outcomes of liver transplantation (LT). METHODS: From January 2004 to December 2022, donor blood transfusion information was available for 113,017 adult recipients of LT in the United Network for Organ Sharing database and was classified into 4 levels of transfusion: no-transfusion (N = 68,130), transfusion of 1-5 units (N = 33,629), 6-10 units (N = 8067), and >10 units (N = 5329). Recipient survival analysis was …

BACKGROUND: With an overarching goal of increasing diversity and inclusion in biomedical sciences, the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) developed a web-based national mentoring platform (MyNRMN) that seeks to connect mentors and mentees to support the persistence of underrepresented minorities in the biomedical sciences. As of May 15, 2024, the MyNRMN platform, which provides mentoring, networking, and professional development tools, has facilitated more than 12,100 unique mentoring connections between faculty, students, and researchers in the biomedical domain.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the large-scale mentoring connections facilitated by our web-based platform between students (mentees) and faculty (mentors) across institutional …

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation For Treating Acute Pain Following Traumatic Fracture: A Case Report Of Rapid-Onset Analgesia Without Motor Blockade, Ammar Siddiqui, Nitin Sekhri, Irim Salik, Fang Yu, Jeff L. Xu Jun 2024

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation For Treating Acute Pain Following Traumatic Fracture: A Case Report Of Rapid-Onset Analgesia Without Motor Blockade, Ammar Siddiqui, Nitin Sekhri, Irim Salik, Fang Yu, Jeff L. Xu

NYMC Faculty Publications

Analgesia following acute traumatic fracture remains a clinical challenge. Pain relief via peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is a promising treatment modality due to its opioid-sparing effects and rapid, reversible sensory blockade without motor blockade. We present the case of a patient who suffered a traumatic tibial plateau fracture. A popliteal sciatic PNS device was placed on postoperative day 1 following inadequate pain control. The patient reported marked pain relief, a significant reduction in morphine milligram equivalent (MME) utilization, and improved early functional recovery. The PNS lead was removed at the patient's 2-month follow-up visit without any adverse events.

Facilitator Ethnicity And Clinical Judgement Among Senior Minority Students Using Unfolding Case Studies, Rachael King May 2024

Facilitator Ethnicity And Clinical Judgement Among Senior Minority Students Using Unfolding Case Studies, Rachael King

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Unfolding case studies are a technique used in advancing critical thinking in order for nursing students to enhance their clinical judgement. The format at which they are delivered can influence the degree of learning, understanding, applying, analyzing, and evaluating for students, especially senior minority nursing students. This quasi-experimental posttest survey between-groups study involved implementing unfolding case studies with a randomly selected minority or non-minority facilitator video recording for senior minority nursing students. After completing the case study, all participants were given a posttest survey, the Clinical Decision Making in Nursing Scale (Jenkins, 1983). The survey evaluates students’ self-perceived clinical judgement. …

Defining Faculty’S Role In Supporting Student Mental Health Needs In Higher Education, Erica B. Riba May 2024

Defining Faculty’S Role In Supporting Student Mental Health Needs In Higher Education, Erica B. Riba

Student Theses

The subject of mental health among college students has been prevalent for decades. Today, college students are facing more challenges to mental wellness than ever before. Faculty are often the first and only point of contact for many students. Faculty have a role to play in supporting student mental health, but that role has not been clearly defined. This study aims to bring clarity to some of these critical issues and offers a lens into this broad topic from faculty themselves. A mixed-methods design was used for this study. 889 people who have downloaded The Jed Foundation’s Faculty Guide to …

University Social Responsibility In Latin America: Systematic Review, Juana Matilde Cuba Sancho, Rosa María Contreras Gómez, Heddy Liliana Colca García, Alicia Lourdes Merino Lozano May 2024

University Social Responsibility In Latin America: Systematic Review, Juana Matilde Cuba Sancho, Rosa María Contreras Gómez, Heddy Liliana Colca García, Alicia Lourdes Merino Lozano

Revista de la Facultad de Medicina Humana

Introduction: University social responsibility is present in the discourses of academics, but it fails to permeate the actions that lead to the transformation of the university, requiring a paradigm shift. At present there are conceptual confusions that make its promotion and transformative practice very difficult, in many universities it is confused with social projection, which reduces its transversal dimension. Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence related to university social responsibility in Latin America. Methods: Systematic review of the literature, between the months of August to December 2021; the search for articles was carried out in the databases: Scopus, Scielo, Doaj, …

A Structured Curriculum Supporting Biomedical Trainees’ Transition Into Independent Academic Positions And Early Career Success, Mabel Perez-Oquendo, Gabriele Romano, David P Farris, Varsha Gandhi, Ignacio I Wistuba, Robert E Tillman, Ryan Udan, Paolo Mangahas, Rama Soundararajan Apr 2024

A Structured Curriculum Supporting Biomedical Trainees’ Transition Into Independent Academic Positions And Early Career Success, Mabel Perez-Oquendo, Gabriele Romano, David P Farris, Varsha Gandhi, Ignacio I Wistuba, Robert E Tillman, Ryan Udan, Paolo Mangahas, Rama Soundararajan

The United States government makes a substantial investment in biomedical training programs each year. However, for most trainees, these opportunities do not translate into career progression in academic research pathways. Only about one-fifth of postdoctoral fellows eventually secure a tenure-track faculty position, and even among these candidates, attrition is high. Although a number of factors govern career choices and career longevity, the transition from trainee to faculty is a challenging process and requires knowledge and skills that are not necessarily developed during a traditional university experience. Many postdoctoral fellows receive adequate training in research skills and scientific communication, but new …

Experiences Of Undergraduate Nursing Faculty Adapting To The Changes Of The Next Generation Nclex, Marlene Kilpack Whiteside Feb 2024

Experiences Of Undergraduate Nursing Faculty Adapting To The Changes Of The Next Generation Nclex, Marlene Kilpack Whiteside

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Undergraduate nursing faculty are responsible for preparing nursing students for patient care in a dynamic health care setting and are challenged with meeting the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) change to the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN). The National Council of State Boards of Nursing recommended the incorporation of the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM) and competency-based curriculum in preparation for NGN testing that began in 2023. Understanding how faculty experienced and adapted to changes in curriculum, patient-centered instruction, and NGN testing may help future nurse faculty in adapting. The purpose of this basic exploratory, qualitative study guided by the achievement …
