Impact Of Social Determinants Of Health On Skill Of Involvement: Differences In First Year Adn And Bsn Nursing Students In Rural Oklahoma, Cynthia Brown

Dissertations

The impact of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) on Skill of Involvement (SOI) has not been adequately studied in nursing education. The skill of involvement is defined by Benner (2022) as necessary to expert-level nursing and it brings humanity, meaningfulness, acute situational awareness, and rapid thinking required for strong clinical decision-making in crisis management of the deteriorating patient. It is important for nurse educators to understand how SDOH impacts SOI on nursing students in order to transform the delivery of nursing education. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of SDOH on SOIs in first-year nursing students …

We Can Walk Together: Motivational Interviewing In Helping Professions, Nathan E. Purdue Apr 2024

We Can Walk Together: Motivational Interviewing In Helping Professions, Nathan E. Purdue

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

Psychotherapists and researchers alike reasonably express ambivalence in the extant literature concerning its effectiveness. On one hand, psychotherapists can feel relief that the more than 500 theoretical paradigms that exist are statistically effective in their treatment. On the other hand, research consistently indicates that the existence of evidence-based treatments have not decreased the prevalence of common psychological problems such as major depressive disorder. Barriers to treatment abound, and motivation/adherence to treatment protocols may be a difficult process for a patient suffering through a psychosocial quandary. Additionally, psychological disorders inherently have perpetuating behaviors that may impede or attenuate treatment progress. Motivational …

The Development And Initial Validation Of An Empathy Scale For Higher Education Instructors, Jennifer R. Bridenbaugh Apr 2024

The Development And Initial Validation Of An Empathy Scale For Higher Education Instructors, Jennifer R. Bridenbaugh

Dean's Leadership Council Library Research Prize

The relationship between a teacher and student can be an important part of student success, especially for students of higher education. One factor that may influence student outcomes is the level of empathy a teacher may demonstrate toward a student. Empathy is an important part of interpersonal relationships as it promotes a feeling or understanding of another’s emotions through taking on a different perspective. Empathy can also produce a response leading to altruistic behavior. According to some theoretical models the prosocial characteristic of empathy contributes to the social emotional competence (SEC) of a teacher or instructor. The higher the SEC …

Fostering Empathy In Communication Sciences And Disorders Through Interprofessional Simulation: Bridging The Gap Between Lecture And Practice, Cynthia A. Hovland, Carol Spears, Melissa Volk

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

This exploratory study sought to understand the experiences of CSD students participating in an interprofessional simulation focused on empathy development and how it could inform their future practice. This study used a non-random, purposive sample of 29 CSD students from one United States university who attended one of three Team STEPPS seminar training days that were offered during three separate semesters. Post-seminar surveys were completed, and conventional content analysis used to analyze data. Three primary themes, and corresponding subthemes emerged: (a) establish trust (build rapport; identify patient care goals; and encourage active participation; (b) facilitate collaborative plan of care (provide …

Emotional Stressors Faced By Medical Students Expressed Using Cartoons: A Qualitative Study, Casey Fishman, Ba, Justin Do, Bs, Fred W. Markham Jr., Md

Alpha Omega Alpha Research Symposium Posters

Purpose: Empathy, a fundamental pillar of medicine, has been shown to decrease in medical school. Increased stress is linked to decreased empathy, but specific stressors remain unclear. The goal of this study was to qualitatively explore specific stressors among third year medical students.

Methods: Third year medical students (n=248) participated in Reflection Rounds with a clinician and a member of pastoral care at Thomas Jefferson University and in their final sessions created a cartoon to express sentiments surrounding medicine. Qualitative analysis of the cartoons was conducted on both the images and text. Common themes were identified from the students’ …

Lived Experiences Of People With Substance Use Disorder As Healthcare Education To Develop Empathy For This Population, Whitney Bynum Jan 2024

Lived Experiences Of People With Substance Use Disorder As Healthcare Education To Develop Empathy For This Population, Whitney Bynum

Nursing | Senior Theses

The negative attitudes and feelings of healthcare workers towards patients with substance use disorder are well documented. These include, but are not limited to, believing a person with this disease is “drug seeking”, “violent”, and “unmotivated”. While this population has challenging issues to address, these beliefs can decrease the quality of care provided and results in less people seeking out needed treatment. Reducing stigmas through alternative education methods, like learning the life story of a patient, can help health care workers develop feelings of empathy and compassion. Subsequently, this education can result in better care and outcomes for these patients. …
