With the ever-increasing demand for animal protein and the continual need for the assurance of proper animal welfare, investigations of preventative strategies for diseases is greatly needed. Specifically in the cattle industry, infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), commonly known as pinkeye, causes a large economic loss to the producer. However, effective mitigation strategies are lacking. Partly, this is due to the lack of studies investigating the ocular microbiome. Therefore, studies investigating the bovine ocular microbiome are greatly needed to better understand IBK disease etiology. To this end, we investigated the changes in the ocular microbiome in animals before, during and after …
Exploring The Functional Significance Of A Yap1 Missense Variant Of Uncertain Significance In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Nathan Jones
Exploring The Functional Significance Of A Yap1 Missense Variant Of Uncertain Significance In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Nathan Jones
Theses
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex disorder with various implications, such as polycystic ovaries, visceral obesity, and increased risk of cancer. YAP1 was recently identified as a gene of interest in the development of PCOS. Researchers have established that single nucleotide variants in YAP1 are likely to play a role in PCOS development. This project aims to provide insight into the potential impact of a YAP1 variant of uncertain significance (VUS). Studies in C. elegans have established yap-1 as a nematode ortholog for human YAP1. A YAP1 VUS was identified through ClinVar, YAP1 c.1015A>G (p.Asn339Asp). Evolutionary conservation …
Genetic Analysis Of Hereditary Gingival Fibromatosis Associated Sos1 Missense Variants Of Uncertain Significance In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Himani Patel
Theses
Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a disease that can present as benign overgrowth of gingival tissue in the mouth. The overgrowth can enclose the entire mouth and teeth in severe cases or present itself in a concentrated area. Researchers have identified that mutations in the SOS1 gene can be responsible for HGF. This disease can impair basic functions related to the mouth. Eating, smiling, speaking can all be affected. Additionally, excess inflammation can cause periodontal disease because of the difficulty in maintaining proper oral health. Periodontal disease can lead to severe bone loss which can lead to complete loss of …
