Aspirin In The Primary Prevention Of Cardiovascular Disease, Briana Stephanie Murar Dec 2022

Aspirin In The Primary Prevention Of Cardiovascular Disease, Briana Stephanie Murar

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)

For decades, people have prophylactically used aspirin (ASA), or acetylsalicylic acid, to mitigate their risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The role of ASA as a means of secondary prevention for CVD is well established, however there are conflicting schools of thought as to whether or not it should be used as primary prophylaxis. While this indication has been studied for more than 30-years, questions remain pertaining to the risk of bleeding that is associated with ASA usage, which ranges from mild epistaxis to life threatening hemorrhage.1 Lifestyle and behavioral factors play a large role in a person’s CVD risk, however …

Microalbuminuria And Hypertension Among Immigrants With Type 2 Diabetes: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study, Shiryn D. Sukhram, Gustavo Zarini, Lemia H. Shaban, Joan A. Vaccaro, Fatma G. Huffman Oct 2022

Microalbuminuria And Hypertension Among Immigrants With Type 2 Diabetes: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study, Shiryn D. Sukhram, Gustavo Zarini, Lemia H. Shaban, Joan A. Vaccaro, Fatma G. Huffman

Publications and Research

Purpose: This study examined the association of microalbuminuria (MAU), as determined by albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR), with hypertension (HTN) among Turkish immigrants with type 2 diabetes (T2D) living in deprived neighborhoods of The Hague, Netherlands.

Methods: A total of 110 participants, physician-diagnosed with T2D, aged 30 years were recruited from multiple sources from The Hague, Netherlands in a cross-sectional design. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured using automated office blood pressure equipment. Urine albumin was measured by immunoturbidimetric assay. Urine creatinine was determined using the Jaffe method. MAU was defined as ACR 3.5 mg/mmol for females …

The Effect Of Age Concentration And Glucose Levels In Rage-Mediated Cardiac Fibroblast Migration In Type 2 Diabetes, Lorral Kanauss May 2022

The Effect Of Age Concentration And Glucose Levels In Rage-Mediated Cardiac Fibroblast Migration In Type 2 Diabetes, Lorral Kanauss

Honors Theses

Diabetes is one of the largest health concerns in the United States. Its continuous increase in prevalence has led to it being one of the largest healthcare costs and consistently listed as one of the leading causes of death. That being said, diabetes also increases the risk of other health conditions, one of which is cardiovascular disease. Left ventricle hypertrophy resulting in the stiffening of the left ventricle and diastolic dysfunction is one form of cardiovascular disease associated with diabetes. Thought to be impacted by decreased fibroblast migration in the extracellular matrix, the experiments performed in this study seek to …

The Impact Of Long Term Ovariectomy On Diastolic Function And Fibrosis Following Chronic Sympathetic Stimulation In Mice, Erin Moore May 2022

The Impact Of Long Term Ovariectomy On Diastolic Function And Fibrosis Following Chronic Sympathetic Stimulation In Mice, Erin Moore

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) accounts for the leading number of deaths worldwide. Prior to menopause, women exhibit lower rates of CVD compared to age-matched men, however, risks for women increase with menopause. Studies show estrogen loss and age exacerbating cardiac β-adrenergic receptor (β-AR) signaling and contractile function. We therefore hypothesized that prolonged estrogen deficiency and chronic β-adrenergic stimulation cause decreases in cardiac function and increases in fibrosis in aged female hearts. Female mice underwent either an ovariectomy (OVX) or a control SHAM surgery at 10 weeks old and were infused with Isoproterenol for three days via mini osmotic pumps in …

Cardiac Telehealth Rehabilitation: Empowering The Patient, Alexander James Schmidt Hoff Apr 2022

Cardiac Telehealth Rehabilitation: Empowering The Patient, Alexander James Schmidt Hoff

Nursing Masters Papers

Coronary artery disease or coronary heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Center-based cardiac rehab has long been a sustainable answer for recovery from an acute coronary event. However, the COVID-19 pandemic halted in-person appointments for cardiac rehab patients. Therefore, patients and their healthcare team met virtually. The objective of this literature review is to discover the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of cardiac telerehabilitation, as it will likely have a more prominent role in patient recovery from acute myocardial infarctions. To determine this, a literature review was conducted based on recent studies involving coronary artery …

Cardiovascular Disease Mortality Among Asian American And Pacific Islander Breast Cancer Survivors In The United States By Socioeconomic Status And Rurality, 2000-2018, Katherine Luis Ho Jan 2022

Cardiovascular Disease Mortality Among Asian American And Pacific Islander Breast Cancer Survivors In The United States By Socioeconomic Status And Rurality, 2000-2018, Katherine Luis Ho

Public Health Theses

Background: Known racial/ethnic disparities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among breast cancer survivors exist and it is well-documented that non-Hispanic Black (NHB) breast cancer survivors experience higher incidence of CVD mortality compared to NHW women. However, few studies have examined CVD mortality among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) survivors, especially with respect to socioeconomic factors and rurality at the county-level. The aim of this study was to describe how county-level factors influence disparities in CVD mortality among AANHPI breast cancer survivors. Methods: Using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 18 registries, we analyzed a retrospective cohort of …
