Background: Nurse leaders must create a collaborative work setting to promote a healthy work environment (HWE). The Joint Commission reported in 2014 that 71% of physicians and nurses reported disruptive behavior was linked to medical errors. The culture of a team sets the foundation of safety for patients and nurses. A HWE is necessary to ensure agility, progress and effectively strive for zero harm. Nurse executives are challenged to empower front-line leaders to create a HWE conducive to open communication, psychological safety and results in a setting where employees can thrive.
Problem Description: There is an epidemic of bullying and …

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic forced dental schools to close their campuses and move didactic instruction online. The abrupt transition to online learning, however, has raised several issues that have not been resolved. While several studies have investigated dental students’ attitude towards online learning during the pandemic, mixed results have been reported. Additionally, little research has been conducted to identify and understand factors, especially pedagogical factors, that impacted students’ acceptance of online learning during campus closure. Furthermore, how online learning during the pandemic impacted students’ learning performance has not been empirically investigated. In March 2020, the dental school studied here moved …

The Effect Of Service Excellence Training: Examining Providers' Patient Experience Scores, Katelyn J. Cavanaugh, Monica A. Johnson, Courtney L. Holladay
Patient Experience Journal
Previous research and applied work has shown that communication-based training has the potential to impact important outcomes for healthcare organizations. Our institution developed and deployed Service Excellence, a communications-focused training, in our large academic cancer-focused healthcare system. In this study, we investigated whether patient experience improved for those with care providers who completed Service Excellence, as measured by Press Ganey Provider Experience surveys, and whether the effect of Service Excellence training depends on employee engagement. Results indicated that participating in Service Excellence training positively impacts perceptions of patient experience, and that the impact of the training is stronger for providers …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study investigated the acceptability of DOCS K-5, a behavior parenting program adapted for parents of elementary aged children. Despite proven efficacy in preventing maladaptive behaviors, parenting programs have historically suffered from low attendance and engagement. Participants (N = 13) attending the pilot DOCS K-5 program took part in six group interviews while enrolled in the program to examine the facilitators and barriers to attendance, perceived effectiveness, and collateral benefits received from participation in the program. This study considered possible cognitive, affective, instructional, and pragmatic facilitators or barriers to attendance and engagement. Participants described motivations to learn various types …

Effectiveness Of Auditory Interventions On Children's Attention, Engagement, Self-Regulation, And Auditory Discrimination, Victoria Brager, Claira Geller, Jessica Kresl, Emily Waham
School of Occupational Therapy Master's Capstone Projects (2016-2021)
Sensory-based interventions are commonly used in occupational therapy practice to support children and youth with disabilities that may impact occupational performance. Auditory interventions are a specific sensory intervention centered around the use of sounds thought to create neural changes in the brain resulting in improved functional performance (Wink, McKeown, & Casey, 2017). Four occupational therapy research students collaborated with a local pediatric occupational therapist who was interested in obtaining updated evidence on auditory interventions with children. Researchers screened and systematically reviewed the literature to address the question, "Do auditory interventions improve self-regulation, engagement, auditory discrimination, and/or attention for children?" Upon …

Levels Of Engagement In Mental Health Services Regarding Minorities, Karla Salazar Rendon
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study focuses on analyzing if the level of engagement when receiving mental health services affects how many mental health providers an individual has. Although mental health impacts everyone, minorities encounter barriers such as language, transportation, and residential segregation. Obstacles such as these discourage individuals in regards to pursuing mental health services. Minorities make up a significant amount of the U.S. population: however, they are underrepresented in the mental health field. The challenges they encounter need to be addressed to provide efficient services. This study includes male and female participants over the age of 18 in San Bernardino County. The …

Physician Burnout: Stress Within The Health Care System, Aidan Hauser
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
As our nation’s healthcare system expands, more stress and responsibility are placed on our physicians and frontline healthcare workers. The pressures of the daily job often prove extremely damaging to the employee’s mental and physical health. Physician and worker burnout is a growing epidemic that is damaging our care providers more and more every day. Burnout effects not only workers, but all of those surrounding them as well. This plague is not going to be repaired by one single change, but it is clear that many adjustments must be made to reform our healthcare system.

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background:
Conducting Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in health research is a way of building knowledge that incorporates the experience of service users, adds research impact, and helps avoid wasting resources on findings that have little relevance to people or cannot be implemented. We argue that there is a need to extend ethical considerations currently focused on research participants with aphasia to encompass and guide expectations of involvement in partnerships with people with aphasia across the research lifecycle.
Method:
We use the 2018 revision of the Australian National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research as the framework for this …
Implementing Modern Management In Nursing, Ashley E. Hall
Implementing Modern Management In Nursing, Ashley E. Hall
MSN Capstone Projects
Throughout the recent years, there has been occurrence of massive nursing shortages across the country. While there are many explanations as to why these shortages could be occurring, one very common explanation is that of poor leadership. As it now stands, the training for new leaders is a “trial by fire” style of orientation. New leaders either have a short training period consisting of minor introductions and gathering of various system access, or no training for their new position whatsoever. This style of orientation leads to poor outcomes for the leader as well as the team they are put in …

Training in environmental health (EH) engages and inspires youth to tackle health promotion and policy change. Yet, there is little guidance on how to successfully nurture and sustain youth engagement. This paper compares four case studies of youth engagement to promote EH in rural and urban communities using the Youth Empowerment Solutions (YES!) framework. Of the case studies in rural (Central Appalachia) and urban (Cincinnati, Ohio) communities, two employ citizen science approaches using PhotoVoice and environmental sampling; one engages youth in a science communication camp; and one focuses on policy advocacy. We compare and contrast these case studies using the …
