Educating School Nurses: Returning To School During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kelle Flynn-Gulley, Tracy L. Brewer
Educating School Nurses: Returning To School During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kelle Flynn-Gulley, Tracy L. Brewer
Graduate Publications and Other Selected Works - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
As schools began reopening, following government mandated school closure early on during the COVID-19 pandemic, new safety measures and protocols were put in place to keep students and staff safe. School nurses have become essential to ensuring schools reopen safely. However, as school nurses were forced to adapt to their increasing roles and responsibilities, a method for providing continuing education to school nurses within an East Tennessee school district did not exist. The goal of this evidence-based practice project was to provide continuing education to school nurses on COVID-19 return to school guidelines via an e-learning modality. Larrabee’s Model for …

Reducing Incidence Of Contrast-Induced Acute Kidney Injury Through Nursing Education, Hilarie Rankin
Reducing Incidence Of Contrast-Induced Acute Kidney Injury Through Nursing Education, Hilarie Rankin
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) occurs commonly in patients following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and has been linked to increased patient morbidity, higher risk for cardiovascular mortality, and a large burden of annual healthcare costs. The implementation of evidence-based care standards by nursing staff has been shown to reduce incidence of CI-AKI. Current discrepancies in nursing care have been linked to increased incidence of CI-AKI; therefore, the need for enhanced nurse buy-in with evidence-based protocols is paramount. The primary investigator sought to increase knowledge of CI-AKI and nursing compliance with an established evidence-based protocol at a single center hospital. After …

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate a CME-accredited human trafficking didactic and discussion-based training for healthcare professionals by comparing participant knowledge and attitudes on human trafficking before and after attending the training. Methods: A novel 18-item survey was developed to test the knowledge of and attitudes towards human trafficking. Participants of 17 standardized trainings delivered by 4 physician-trainers over a two-year period were invited to take a pre-test and 2 post-tests at 1-week and 6-months post training. Surveys were anonymously collected and linked to each participant with a de-identified number. Data were analyzed using SPSS software with …
Complex Conditions Of The Hand: A Resource For Rural Therapists, Jay D. Cooper
Complex Conditions Of The Hand: A Resource For Rural Therapists, Jay D. Cooper
Occupational Therapy Capstone Presentations
The purpose of this project was to address multiple disparities in the complex treatment of upper extremity conditions and injuries in the rural therapy setting with an accessible educational resource. These disparities include the lack of continuing education specifically targeted at the rural healthcare setting, the barriers to unique occupation-based treatment which occupational therapists are obligated to administer, and the need to provide information regarding hand therapy protocols to bridge the communication gap between hand specialists and rural therapists. The project was completed at the Monument Health Orthopedic and Specialty Hospital in Rapid City, SD, in an outpatient hand therapy …

The Illinois Association of Nurse Anesthetists (IANA) is a professional organization representing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). To ensure compliance with high standards of care in the profession, CRNAs are required to obtain continuing education units (CEUs) for each 4-year certification period. The IANA offers conferences in both fall and spring, however, a loss in attendance and revenue at state meetings concerns the board members as to how state members are complying with the educational requirements to remain certified. It was imperative that the IANA needed to implement new educational opportunities that actively engaged CRNAs resulting in an increase in …
Implementation Of A National Telestroke Program: A Unit-Based Staff Education Inititative, Leigh Ann Raymond
Implementation Of A National Telestroke Program: A Unit-Based Staff Education Inititative, Leigh Ann Raymond
Master of Science in Nursing Scholarly Project
Abstract
A national telestroke program (NTSP) was implemented at a medical center in the latter half of 2020. Following two inpatient strokes, it was discovered that only 67 members of the 370-member inpatient nursing staff had been assigned the required online learning modules. A unit-based nursing educational initiative was developed utilizing available online learning modules to address the gaps in knowledge in recognizing acute stroke signs, symptoms and providing timely care. The educational initiative, however, supplemented and complimented the online learning modules by incorporating an in-person poster presentation on inpatient strokes that included a small group discussion of an inpatient …

Methods. This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study that employed a self-administered online survey. The subjects were pharmacist members of the Mississippi Pharmacists Association (MPhA). Demographic characteristics were collected. The level of mental health stigma among the respondents was examined using the Community …
Transgender Ce For Ot Practitioners And Students, Kalie Fagins
Transgender Ce For Ot Practitioners And Students, Kalie Fagins
Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
Introduction/Rational:
The population of individuals that identify outside of the gender binary social constructs is increasing and becoming more visible. Therefore, it is important for healthcare practitioners to be well equipped to provide affirming care for patients in the LGBTQIA+ community. Findings show that transgender patients have higher incidences of negative experiences with healthcare workers despite healthcare workers having more affirming attitudes. Other studies found healthcare practitioners lacked training and knowledge to provide the best quality of care.
Objectives:
To educate occupational therapy practitioners on gender affirming care related to daily activities, health, and well-being.
Method/approach:

Implementation And Assessment Of A New Program Requirement To Promote Professional Development, Christina Davlin-Pater, Elisabeth Rosencrum
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Requiring students to complete and record professional development type activities similar to the requirements of certified athletic trainers may help promote the values and behaviors associated with life-long learning in the evolving practice of athletic training, as well as prepare students more practically for the expectations of credential maintenance. We sought to design, implement, assess, and improve a new professional development program requirement in a professional-level athletic training program that closely mirrored the process and re-certification requirements for certified athletic trainers. Methods: a quasi-experimental mixed-methods approach was used. Data were collected over two consecutive years at a private …

The Do-Live-Well (DLW) framework is a health promotion approach developed by Canadian occupational therapists (OTs). As the DLW framework is relatively new, it has not been widely adopted by OTs. In order to facilitate OTs to incorporate the DLW concepts in their practice, there should be more learning opportunities, and online and in-person workshops have been chosen to be a specific interest of this study. The purpose of this project was to develop theory- and evidence-based in-person and online educational workshops for OTs as a pre-implementation study to increase the knowledge of the DLW framework among OTs. In order to …
