“Education Is Definitely Key”: An Interpretive Description Of Nursing Students’ Experiences With Pediatric Oral Health Nursing Education, Jill Bally, Shelley Spurr

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

In North America, dental disease is the leading pediatric chronic illness. Poor oral health influences a child’s ability to speak, eat, and socialize and has been linked with heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Despite overwhelming evidence that poor oral health can have lifelong and systemic influences on overall well-being, comprehensive oral health care has not been emphasized in nursing education. The purpose of this study was to explore third-year nursing students’ perceptions and experiences with pediatric oral health nursing education through an interpretive description approach. Data for analysis gathered in focus group interviews resulted in three main themes: nursing education …

Background: Nurse educators’ transition to a concept-based curriculum requires organizational and administrative support as well as collaborative teamwork. Implementing curricular changes can be challenging. One-on-one interviews were conducted with nurse educators who shared their perspectives on transitioning from a traditional to a newly adopted concept-based baccalaureate nursing curriculum.

Objective: This study explores nurse educators’ perceptions of change as they transitioned from a traditional four-year (eight-semester) baccalaureate nursing curriculum to a three-year (eight-semester) concept-based curriculum.

Method: The researchers used a qualitative descriptive design. Six nurse educators were recruited using purposive sampling. The interviews were conducted by a nurse educator new to …

The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruption to nurse educators’ work, both within higher educational institutions and in clinical practice learning environments. In this study, we explored the experiences of nurse educators in academic and clinical settings during COVID-19 and the impact the pandemic has had on their work. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 nurse educators from six different countries and used thematic analysis to gain a comprehensive understanding of nurse educators experiences during the pandemic. The participants’ experiences were classified into stages that reflected the intensity of the pandemic and resulted in four themes: (a) the calm before the …

Purpose: Clinical nursing instructors must participate in continuous professional learning to maintain competency in nursing practice and in clinical instruction to prepare nursing students adequately for professional practice. The purpose of this research was to examine self-study as a method of continuous professional learning in nursing education.

Procedures: A clinical instructor undertook to improve her clinical instruction with regard to five formative assessment strategies illustrated to promote student learning in regular classrooms. She translated and then implemented these strategies in nursing education. This self-study of instructional practice employed a reflective journal and systematic documentation of iterative processes of planning, action, …

Physical Assessment Skills Used By Registered Nurses, Sherry Morrell, Gina Pittman, Natalie Giannotti, Fabrice Mowbray

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Background: Nurses work in a wide variety of settings. Therefore, it is essential for nursing educators to continually evaluate and adapt nursing programs to ensure that the curricula prepare students to practice in a variety of health care settings. In this study, we sought to determine which skills were routinely used by registered nurses and to examine whether the cumulative number of practice settings influenced the number, and type, of physical assessments used.

Methods: An electronic or a paper survey was distributed to registered nurses who worked as nursing clinical instructors at a mid-sized university in this cross-sectional study. Measures …

No single universal learner type exists, however historically, pedagogical practices in higher education have focused on meeting the learning needs of an average or typical student. The purpose of this study was to describe the manner and extent in which a course, designed using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, provided an inclusive learning environment to a diverse population of first-year baccalaureate nursing students. Co-instructors redesigned a large in-person and place-based course using theoretical and structural principles of UDL to remove potential learning barriers and promote authentic inclusion of all students. A convergent mixed methods descriptive case study design was …

Bullying is a pervasive issue in nursing and other health care professional programs. As a student/faculty team at one university in Western Canada, we have created a number of initiatives within an overall project entitled Cognitive Rehearsal to Address Bullying (CRAB) that was designed to support students in managing bullying if they witnessed or experienced it during their program of study. One such initiative is the CRAB Workshop (herein referred to as “the CRAB Workshop” or “the Workshop”). In this paper, we describe the Workshop, which emerged in response to concerns shared by students and faculty regarding the normalized and …

Transforming Academic Internationalization In Nursing Education In Ghana, Emmanuel Akwasi Marfo, Desire Urindwanayo

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

The development of formal nursing education in Ghana has been influenced by international organizations since its beginning in the mid-1940s. Some of the 218 accredited nursing institutions in Ghana engage in academic internationalization through several international activities. Today, the focus of nursing education and healthcare delivery worldwide appears to be shifting towards globalization owing to the emerging market economies and political alliances that lean towards neo-liberal perspectives. In this paper, the aspects of internationalization and globalization of Ghanaian nursing education that need to be retained and those aspects that require transformation are discussed. International student exchange programs with a western …

Currently, we are faced with an important equity gap and opportunity for nursing in higher education related to Indigenous Peoples and health. While Westernized higher education often marginalizes Indigenous Peoples, there is an important opportunity to respectfully engage with Indigenous Knowledges. Furthermore, broadening perspectives beyond a dominant Westernized worldview has the potential to advance higher education for Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners alike. We are concerned that ongoing assimilation of Indigenous learners poses a profound risk of social injustice that is contrary to the aim of higher education. In our effort to reconcile nursing education in this context, we offer this …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Nursing students in their final year of their nursing education program are expected to administer medications to patients safely and competently. Currently, there is a lack of research with regard to how senior nursing students are using clinical reasoning to support medication safety in the clinical setting. This qualitative descriptive case study explored how senior nursing students applied critical thinking and clinical reasoning to support medication safety in their final clinical practicums. The study took place in 2019 and consisted of 13 face-to-face interviews with senior nursing students in their final clinical rotation. Six themes emerged from the interviews. Students …

Educating new nurses on primary prevention and population health promotion can be challenging with the erosion of public health in Canada over the past decade. The lack of public health nursing positions can create difficulties when endeavoring to engage nursing students in understanding nursing’s role in population health promotion. To understand the challenges and improve efforts to educate new nurses with regard to community health, we conducted a quality-improvement project with nursing students in health-promoting schools from a service-learning perspective. We conducted qualitative interviews with 24 fourth-year nursing students and three health-promoting school principals and used thematic analysis within a …
