Policy Analysis Of The Illinois Nurse Practice Act (Aprn Title Section 65/65-50), Sara Kim
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background
Physician groups claim allowing nurses to use the title "doctor" confuses patients. Nurses assert that the title is common to many disciplines, and nurses should be trusted like other professionals to identify their specialty to patients. Currently, qualified nurses in Illinois using the title "doctor" in clinical areas must introduce themselves to each patient in the following way: "Hi, I'm Dr. Smith, the nurse practitioner taking care of you today. I do not have a degree in medicine, and I am not a physician or medical doctor” (225 ILCS § 65/65-50).
Purpose
This project aimed to evaluate Illinois Nurse …

Introduction. Lifestyle-focused rehabilitation plans need to become part of the standard system of care for the treatment of chronic diseases. To achieve this goal, the KAP of rehabilitation professionals toward lifestyle medicine needs to be understood. This study investigated the niche of orthopedic manual physical therapy and is purposed as a foundational model for continued research. Method. A survey instrument was designed to investigate the KAP of orthopedic manual physical therapists toward lifestyle screening and education. Results. There were 155 participants of which 58.1-72.3% reported frequently talking to their patients about lifestyle topics, while 78.1-80.6% felt highly confident and competent …

The Impact Of Technology On The Developing Visual And/Or Auditory Memory In School-Aged Children, Cameron Mayer
The Impact Of Technology On The Developing Visual And/Or Auditory Memory In School-Aged Children, Cameron Mayer
Honors Theses
This study aimed to determine whether time spent on technology impacts the developing auditory or visual memory in school-aged children. A survey was completed with the child participants to acquire a catalog of time spent on both technological devices and non-technological activities. Tests included a visual and auditory memory assessment adapted from the Preschool Language Scales Fifth Edition (PLS-5). The results indicated that there was no significance between the time spent on technology and the visual and auditory memory scores. However, the researchers did find that the auditory mean scores were significantly different from the visual mean scores across the …

This study aimed to determine whether time spent on technology impacts the developing auditory or visual memory in school-aged children. A survey was completed with the child participants to acquire a catalog of time spent on both technology devices and non-technological activities. Tests included a visual and auditory memory assessment adapted from the Preschool Language Scales Fifth Edition (PLS-5). The subtests were expanded upon in order to incorporate an auditory element. The results indicated that there was no significance between time spent on technology and visual and auditory memory scores. This was likely caused by the small sample size. However, …
Synthesis Of 5-Membered Ring Heterocycles For Alzheimer’S Disease, Daniel Fajardo
Synthesis Of 5-Membered Ring Heterocycles For Alzheimer’S Disease, Daniel Fajardo
Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs
The progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is correlated to the degenerative activation of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChR) located in the brain. They are a family of five G-protein coupled receptors, (M1-M5), linked to functions within the central and peripheral nervous system.1 More specifically, activation of M1 with positive allosteric modulators (PAM), have shown to bind to the allosteric pocket and slow the degenerative process of AD with minimal intrinsic effects.2 Structural motifs of potent PAM activity and weak agonism proposed a synthesis of an isooxazoline compound, incorporating a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. The core motif of the proposed isooxazoline structure has been …
Sexual Orientation, Substance Misuse, And Sexual Misconduct At A Conservative Christian University, Maci Chen
Sexual Orientation, Substance Misuse, And Sexual Misconduct At A Conservative Christian University, Maci Chen
Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs
College students in general tend to have high rates of substance use and abuse. Sexual minority college students show high rates of substance use and abuse. These findings are consistent across studies of sexual minority students and their relation to substances. Sexual minority populations are also more at-risk for becoming victims of sexual harassment and assault. Minority stress theory hypothesizes that LGBTQ+students at Christian universities may face heightened stigmatization or alienation, perhaps because of Christian norms/beliefs supporting heterosexual orientation.

Selective Induction Of Apoptosis By Aqueous Extract Of Chinese Medicinal Herb Scutellaria Barbata In Hct-116 Colon Cancer Cells And Ccd-841 Colon Epithelial Cells., Camile Kordas, Joshua Li, Kristin Ferrer
Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs
Scutellaria barbata (SB) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating liver, lung and rectal tumors. We previously found that aqueous extracts of SB inhibited mutagenesis, DNA binding, and metabolism of aflatoxin B1 and benzo(a)pyrene. They were also shown to inhibit foci formation in the colon of AOM-induced mice. Other research demonstrated that ethanol extracts inhibit colorectal cancer growth, inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis. In this study, the effects of aqueous extracts of SB on the induction and modulation of apoptosis in HCT-116 colon cancer cells and CCD-841 normal colon epithelial cells were assessed using TUNEL assay, Apoptosis/Necrosis Detection …
Modeling Of Covid-19 Utilizing Various Compartmental Models To Predict Infection Rates Throughout Michigan, Colleen M. Staniszewski
Modeling Of Covid-19 Utilizing Various Compartmental Models To Predict Infection Rates Throughout Michigan, Colleen M. Staniszewski
Honors Theses
Compartmental modeling is a method of employing math to create a visual representation of a disease interacting with a select population, typically used in epidemiology analyses. This project applies compartmental modeling equations to data collected on the various aspects of COVID-19 in Michigan. Comparing current data to past predictive models, as well as the visual representations that were developed through the various compartmental modeling methods, allows an assessment of the effects of the preventative measures taken by the state, the various rates at which the infection is able to spread, as well as the potential path and spread of the …

The Problem
The world is facing a tsunami of chronic diseases of the brain such as dementia, Parkinson's, and stroke. But all populations are not affected equally. Though we are all at greater risk of developing these diseases, minority communities such as the Black and Hispanic populations are at much greater risk of succumbing to these conditions. To date we have spent billions of dollars on research and public health measures that have repeatedly failed, but over the last decade it has become evident that much of these diseases can simply be averted through effective public health and community-based measures …

Coping Skills, Emotional Intelligence, Attachment, And Resilience On Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Private Sector Emergency Medical Technicians, Brenda-Joyce Gonzales Orozco Markert-Green
Dissertations
Problem
Private sector Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are first responders who respond to traumatic incident scenes along with firefighters and police officers. However, news agencies and the public do not acknowledge private sector EMTs with the same vigor or accolade as public sector EMTs, nor are the risks to life, health, and mental well-being recognized among this population. Thus, the research literature has been sparse regarding how private sector EMTs experience PTSD, and what unique risk factors and needs may be present.
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between PTSD symptoms and coping skills, …
