The group of 22 warm-blooded half-breed horses (6 stallions, 6 mares, and 10 geldings) and their riders (12 women and 10 men) who ended jumping competition for juniors, were selected for a study. The horses were aged from 7 to 17 years, while the riders were 15 to 18 years old. The saliva samples were collected before and after each jumping round. The cortisol concentration was determined by using an immunoassay method. The following factors were considered: horses' sex, age, and breeds, riders' sex and age as well. The aim of this study was to evaluate the saliva cortisol levelsof recreational horses dependent on the type of horse activity. A total of 68 horses were included in the experiment and divided into groups according to recreational activity, type of horse, age, term of saliva collection, and sex. Saliva samples were obtained from each horse at 3 measurement points: in the morning (6 a.m.), in the evening (6 p.m.), and immediately after work. Dominance rank within a group can affect the stress level of an animal. However, there is no consensus on whether the dominant or subordinate animals are physiologically more stressed. It was aimed herein to determine the effect of social rank on the stress level and expression of some behaviors of adult Hemsin, Chios, and Karakul rams. According to their dominance index (DI) values, the rams were classified as low-ranked (DI < 0.33; n = 13), medium-ranked (DI: 0.33-0.66; n = 13), and high-ranked (DI > 0.66; n = 13) individuals.
