Perspectives Of Canadian University Coaches On Integrating Sport Psychology And Mental Performance Consultants In Varsity Programs, Federico Cisneros Sánchez

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Recently, sport psychology has become a more popular resource for athletes and coaches when looking to increase performance. It is unknown how many Canadian universities utilize sport psychology services in their athletic programs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with coaches of Canadian university varsity teams to learn about their opinions on sport psychology and mental performance consultants (MPCs). The research was approached from a pragmatic perspective. Results showed that MPCs are important to enhance performance and provide mental health resources. MPCs provide athletes with personal and leadership development, mental skills training, and mental health support. MPCs can also be a resource …

Assessment Of Landing Biomechanics And Rehabilitation After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Sheila S. Gagnon Dec 2020

Assessment Of Landing Biomechanics And Rehabilitation After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Sheila S. Gagnon

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Aberrant landing biomechanics increase the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and are a focus of rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction. The purpose of the present thesis was to develop and evaluate methods of assessing landing mechanics and investigate the effects of different rehabilitation strategies after ACL reconstruction. Three studies were conducted. The first study used a Delphi process to develop the content of a Clinician-Rated Drop Vertical Jump Scale to evaluate jump landing mechanics during rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction. Twenty experts participated in four rounds of questioning, resulting in 92% agreement for knee valgus collapse, lateral trunk lean, insufficient …

The Effect Of Pacing Strategy On 2000 M Rowing Ergometer Performance In Well-Trained Male And Female Rowers, Ryan A. Clegg Sep 2020

The Effect Of Pacing Strategy On 2000 M Rowing Ergometer Performance In Well-Trained Male And Female Rowers, Ryan A. Clegg

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The purpose of this study was to determine whether an Even pacing strategy would be more optimal than the traditional fast-starting parabolic strategy in a 2000 m rowing race.  13 collegiate level rowers completed two 2000 m pacing strategies; one Evenly paced, and the other a traditional On Water strategy.  Neither pacing strategy demonstrated differences in performance.  This finding was consistent across sexes and experience levels.  Males demonstrated significant correlations with an Even pacing strategy and 6000 m performance (EP p=0.001).  Females showed significant correlation between both strategies and 6000 m performance, plus peak power and the On Water strategy …

Psychological Predictors Of Injury In Collegiate Cheerleaders, Alexander Marchand Aug 2020

Psychological Predictors Of Injury In Collegiate Cheerleaders, Alexander Marchand

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

According to the revised stress-injury model (Williams & Andersen, 1998), greater life stress predicts greater vulnerability to athletic injury, with this relationship being strongest among athletes exhibiting competitive anxiety, less social support, and non-adaptive coping skills. This study tested the validity of this model among collegiate cheerleaders, an injury-prone athlete group. Ninety-two collegiate cheerleaders recorded instances of injury over 12 weeks. Measures of life stress, competitive anxiety, coping style, social support, and previous injury were obtained. Heightened negative life stress did not coincide with greater injury. A positive stress-injury relationship was observed among cheerleaders reporting high avoidance coping. A negative …

The Impact Of Partners In Doubles Racquet Sports And Interpersonal Emotional Regulation, Sarah J. Deck Jun 2020

The Impact Of Partners In Doubles Racquet Sports And Interpersonal Emotional Regulation, Sarah J. Deck

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The overall purpose of this dissertation was to understand the impact that partner play has in doubles racquet sports (tennis, badminton and squash) on emotions, coping and emotional regulation. Study 1 laid the groundwork to understanding the impact (positive or negative) that the different types of partner play (playing well, playing normal, or playing poorly) has in these dyads. Participants (N=103) were randomized into one of three scenarios (written vignettes) designed to manipulate partners play and asked to fill out a questionnaire packet based on the scenario read. Findings of Study 1 showed that there was a difference in the …

Cumulative Purposeful Soccer Heading Can Lead To Compensatory Changes In Brain Activity During Combined Moderate Exercise And Cognitive Load In Female Youth Soccer Players, Alexandra Harriss Jun 2020

Cumulative Purposeful Soccer Heading Can Lead To Compensatory Changes In Brain Activity During Combined Moderate Exercise And Cognitive Load In Female Youth Soccer Players, Alexandra Harriss

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Head trauma that occurs during sporting events is responsible for an increasing number of emergency department visits in Canada and is associated with an increased risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. While head injury in American football has been extensively studied, it cannot be extrapolated to non-helmeted sports. Approximately 265 million people are actively participating in soccer and many are 18 years of age and younger. Soccer is unique in that players use their head to redirect the ball; however, the effects of cumulative purposeful soccer heading on brain health are unknown. Accordingly, the objective of this thesis was to quantify head …

The Effects Of Exercise On Cognition, Mobility, And Neuroimaging Outcomes In Older Adults Without Dementia, Narlon Cassio Boa Sorte Silva Apr 2020

The Effects Of Exercise On Cognition, Mobility, And Neuroimaging Outcomes In Older Adults Without Dementia, Narlon Cassio Boa Sorte Silva

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Cognitive decline is increasing with the aging population and, at present, there is no effective pharmacologic treatment available. Exercise interventions may impart protection against cognitive decline. A novel exercise approach is multiple-modality exercise (MME; aerobic, resistance, and balance exercise) with mind-motor training. Mind-motor training is a promising intervention in the study of cognitive function. Combining MME with mind-motor training may improve or maintain cognition and provide prevention of dementia early in the course of cognitive decline. Individuals with subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) comprise an at-risk group early in the spectrum of cognitive decline that could be targeted for prevention. The …

Coaches Perceptions And Use Of An Online Sport Psychology Resource, Jade Farhat Mar 2020

Coaches Perceptions And Use Of An Online Sport Psychology Resource, Jade Farhat

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Sport psychology has become widely applied in coaching practices to assist in athletic success. Despite the increased use, there is a lack of evidence-based sport psychology information available to coaches in the form of informal sources. The aim of this study was to explore coaches’ perceptions and use of a sport psychology website using mixed methods. Eight coaches participated in semi-structured interviews. A thematic analysis revealed five themes (current use, accessibility, attitudes, website use, website engagement). Google Analytics demonstrated coaches’ engagement with the website. Findings suggested that coaches perceive sport psychology to be relevant to their sport and the website …
