Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The literature suggests that primary care physicians are inadequately educated in the care of people with disabilities. No study to date has evaluated whether internal medicine (IM) and family medicine (FM) residents have received disability-specific education or their level of comfort in caring for people with physical disabilities.

OBJECTIVES: To assess IM and FM residents' receipt of disability-specific education during medical school and residency; to evaluate their self-reported comfort in managing secondary conditions associated with physical disabilities and in coordinating therapies and services for individuals with disabilities; to gauge their interest in receiving disability-specific education.

METHODS: An on-line survey …

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers

(1) Objective: The World Health Organization's (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) classification is a unified framework for the description of health and health-related states. This study aimed to use the ICF framework to classify outcome measures used in follow-up studies of coronavirus outbreaks and make recommendations for future studies. (2) Methods: EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO were systematically searched for original studies assessing clinical outcomes in adult survivors of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (SARS), middle east respiratory syndrome (MERS) and coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) after hospital discharge. Individual items of the identified outcome measures were linked …

Differential Rates Of Intravascular Uptake And Pain Perception During Lumbosacral Epidural Injection Among Adults Using A 22-Gauge Needle Versus 25-Gauge Needle: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Robin Raju, Michael Mehnert, David Stolzenberg, Jeremy Simon, Theodore Conliffe, Jeffrey Gehret Sep 2020

Differential Rates Of Intravascular Uptake And Pain Perception During Lumbosacral Epidural Injection Among Adults Using A 22-Gauge Needle Versus 25-Gauge Needle: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Robin Raju, Michael Mehnert, David Stolzenberg, Jeremy Simon, Theodore Conliffe, Jeffrey Gehret

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Inadvertent intravascular injection has been suggested as the most probable mechanism behind serious neurological complications during transforaminal epidural steroid injections. Authors believe a smaller gauge needle may lead to less intravascular uptake and less pain. Theoretically, there is less chance for a smaller gauge needle to encounter a blood vessel during an injection compared to a larger gauge needle. Studies have also shown smaller gauge needle to cause less pain. The aim of the study was to quantify the difference between a 22-gauge needle and 25-gauge needle during lumbosacral transforaminal epidural steroid injection in regards to intravascular uptake and …

Efficacy Of Work-Related Training For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder, E. Anderson, L. Hatton, K. Schlager, A. Shea, K. Watlington, M. Ferraro, M. C. Potvin

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Research suggests that traditional models of work-related training, in addition to a lack of on-the-job support, may exacerbate difficulties experienced by individuals with autism spectrum disorder with obtaining and maintaining employment

The poor employment outcomes experienced by individuals with ASD are well-documented throughout literature and have resulted in the need to examine more effective ways of providing support and work-related interventions.

Although research has investigated the efficacy of work-related training on successful employment outcomes when used with individuals with ASD, a systematic review summarizing this evidence has yet to be published. Therefore, this review examines and interprets current research evidence …

Efficacy Of Cognitive And Metacognitive Interventions On Executive Functioning Post Traumatic Brain Injury To Enhance Occupational Performance, C. Blaker, A. Curry, S. Dickerson, K. Johnson, M. Santangelo, A. Thomas Tasman, M. Ferraro, Marie-Christine Potvin Jun 2020

Efficacy Of Cognitive And Metacognitive Interventions On Executive Functioning Post Traumatic Brain Injury To Enhance Occupational Performance, C. Blaker, A. Curry, S. Dickerson, K. Johnson, M. Santangelo, A. Thomas Tasman, M. Ferraro, Marie-Christine Potvin

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Cognitive rehabilitation (CR) is proposed as an effective intervention for individuals post Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), by addressing cognitive function through remediating skills and practicing new compensatory skills. While there is considerable research, including systematic reviews that explore cognitive interventions post TBI, more research is needed in which occupational performance is the primary outcome of cognitive intervention. This current systematic review aims to synthesize the current body of evidence available on how using CR techniques to address executive functioning impact occupational performance in individuals who sustained a mild or moderate TBI.

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2020-)

We developed a screening tool of questions to determine which patients would benefit from outpatient PM&R visits after discharge from the hospital/ED that included: four questions looking at function, shortness of breath and cognition. Screening questions were created so a YES response triggers a referral to PM&R to assess functional and cognitive needs for the patient.

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2020-)

COVID19 patients are at risk for becoming quickly deconditioned, especially in the hospital setting given the nature of the virus and those that get admitted. The concern for deconditioning stems from patients being confined to their room, the need to minimize exposure amongst healthcare providers and the need to conserve PPE.

We wanted to find ways to optimize opportunities for patient mobility, maintain patient and provider safety, all while conserving PPE. We reviewed the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine guidelines to help develop the exercise program.

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2020-)

What's the Problem?

Patients post COVID-19 infection have functional limitations at home related to the multi-system effects of the infection, in addition to elevated risk for post-intensive care syndrome.

Our goals were to ensure patients had the resources they needed to safely mobilize at home, ensure referral to appropriate agencies for home care and therapies, and provide guidance on return to life activities in the setting of the stay-at-home order, need to self-quarantine, and limited outpatient therapy options.

Use Of Virtual Communication During Level Ii Fieldwork: A Personal Experience, Laronda Lockhart-Keene, Otd, Otr/L, Cla, Emily Spinelli, Cota/L

Department of Occupational Therapy Posters and Presentations

In fieldwork sites where no full time OTP is employed, a fieldwork student requires 8 hours a week of onsite supervision from an OTP. An onsite supervisor of another profession must be available while the OTP is offsite. The other professional is unable to answer questions related directly to occupational therapy (OT) practice. This poster describes virtual communication methods used during a level II fieldwork at a community based wellness program for older adults and how these methods translate to OT/OTA supervision in practice.
