Learning From Incidents To Reduce The Risk Of Drowning In Swimming Pools: Implementation Of Experience-Based Feedback Regarding Near-Misses In Four Public Facilities In France, Élie Vignac, Pascal Lebihain, Bastien Soulé
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The prevention of sports accidents must rely on a detailed knowledge of accident circumstances and risk factors. Today, very few studies have investigated in depth non-fatal drowning incidents that have occurred in public swimming pools (PSP). Learning from incidents seems likely to advance the knowledge of accident scenarios. This research study aimed to capture minor incidents that might identify safety lessons and preventive measures. Incidents of minor and major aquatic events were collected from four PSPs that had hosted 700,000 bathers per year. About 800 incidents and 300 aquatic rescues performed by lifeguards were recorded within a time frame of …

Influence Of Sport Specialization On Athletic Performance And Injury Risk In Collegiate Swimmers, Samantha M. Gunn, Gerald T. Mangine, Trisha A. Vandusseldorp, Garrett M. Hester
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
To assess the effect of swimming specialization on performance and injury risk in collegiate swimmers, thirty collegiate swimmers (20.1 ± 0.9 years [18.5 – 22.3 years]) were asked to complete an anonymous survey to provide information regarding their sports participation history, success in swimming, and the occurrence and quantity of swimming-related injuries. Specialization status was determined by the swimmer claiming they had specialized and by the number of months (≥ 8 months) they participated in swimming each year. Correlation analysis revealed several significant (p < 0.05) relationships between all determinants of specialization, swimming success, and swimming injuries. Stepwise regression analysis revealed that the age which an athlete specialized was the best predictor of the occurrence of a swimming- related injury (R2 = 0.34, p = 0.004) and the number of injuries sustained (R2 = 0.25, …
The Management Of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Injuries In An Occupational Health Setting: The Role Of The Physical Therapist, Joshua Prall, Michael Ross
The Management Of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Injuries In An Occupational Health Setting: The Role Of The Physical Therapist, Joshua Prall, Michael Ross
Articles & Book Chapters
With the emergence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and the associated high cost of injured workers, physical therapists are in a unique position to help employers manage these concerns through multidisciplinary injury prevention programs, education, ergonomics, on-site treatment, and return to work programs. The purpose of this paper, through a review of the literature, is to describe the effect that workplace injuries have on employees and the economic burden on employers. Furthermore, this paper will highlight the effectiveness a physical therapist can have in the occupational health setting as part of a multidisciplinary team on ergonomics, employee health, prevention of work-related …
Comparing The Effects Of Tissue Flossing And Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization On Ankle Dorsiflexion, Sean Carlson, Garrett Rife, Zachary Williams
Comparing The Effects Of Tissue Flossing And Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization On Ankle Dorsiflexion, Sean Carlson, Garrett Rife, Zachary Williams
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the claimed effects of a new technique called Tissue Flossing and compare those effects with Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, or IASTM. Background: Tissue flossing is a relatively new technique that utilizes a large rubber band that is wrapped around the involved joint. Once applied, range of motion exercises are completed, and the band is removed. The goal is to increase joint range of motion. IASTM involves using a specialized tool to scrape an effected muscle or tendon of the body. The goal is to reduce any adhesions or scar tissue …
Impact Of A Single Injury Prevention Instructional Session On The Incidence Of Injury Among U.S. Army Rotc Cadets, Joshua Wooldridge
Impact Of A Single Injury Prevention Instructional Session On The Incidence Of Injury Among U.S. Army Rotc Cadets, Joshua Wooldridge
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Musculoskeletal injuries are the leading health concern for the United States Army. These injuries are the third leading cause of hospitalizations for Army service members and the primary cause for the majority of service-connect disability discharges. Over 80% of musculoskeletal injuries are overuse injuries caused by physical training. The Joint Services Physical Training Injury Prevention Work Group considers education to be a mandatory component of all injury prevention efforts; however, little military research has investigated the impact of education as a primary intervention. Objective: To examine the effect of an injury prevention education class on the incidence of injuries …
Risk Factors For Boating Incidents In Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada, Catherine Tr Glass, Audrey R. Giles
Risk Factors For Boating Incidents In Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada, Catherine Tr Glass, Audrey R. Giles
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Injury prevention programs that focus on boating and water safety in the Northwest Territories (NWT) have existed for decades; however, rates of boating incidents are much higher in the NWT than southern Canada. To better understand this health disparity, we engaged in community-based participatory research informed by postcolonial feminist theory to examine Aboriginal men’s understandings of the risk factors that contribute to boating incidents in Inuvik, NWT. Participants identified four main risk factors for boating incidents in Inuvik: 1) Gender, 2) age, 3) place, and 4) lack of boating safety education. As a result of these findings and the ways …
Injury Prevention Inclusion In Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Curricula, Ali Marie Galindo
Injury Prevention Inclusion In Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Curricula, Ali Marie Galindo
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Integrating injury prevention into healthcare education has been recommended for over 10 years. However, the literature reveals little about how injury prevention is incorporated into nursing curricula. This study aimed to evaluate if unintentional injury prevention was being taught in pre-licensure baccalaureatenursing education. The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (2008), the Recommended Baccalaureate Competencies and Curricular Guidelines for Public Health Nursing (2018), and the Institute of Medicine’s Initiative on the Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011) were utilized as the driving forces to support injury prevention inclusion. The research questions inquired if pre-licensure baccalaureate CCNE-accredited …

Effects Of Different Combinations Of Concentric And Eccentric Resistance Training Programs On Traditional And Alternative Hamstrings-To-Quadriceps Ratios, Cassio V. Ruas, Ronei S. Pinto, Guy G. Haff, Camila D. Lima, Lee E. Brown
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Resistance training is often recommended for combined increases in traditional and alternative hamstrings-to-quadriceps (H:Q) ratios in order to reduce knee strength imbalance and associated hamstrings and knee ligament injury risk. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different concentric and eccentric resistance training programs on traditional and alternative H:Q ratios. Forty male volunteers were assigned to one of 4 groups: concentric quadriceps and concentric hamstrings (CON/CON, n = 10), eccentric quadriceps and eccentric hamstrings (ECC/ECC, n = 10), concentric quadriceps and eccentric hamstrings (CON/ECC, n = 10), or no training (control (CNTRL), n = 10). Traditional …

Elbow Injury Prevention In Youth Dominican Baseball Players: A Training Intervention Pilot Study, Chelsey Erbaugh Franz, Dawn Hall-Bibb, Myra Stockdale, Aliya Thompson, Bailey Biggs
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Background: Research suggests deficits in shoulder and elbow strength and flexibility may explain the role of elbow injuries in overhead athletes, specifically ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury in baseball players. Significant damage to this ligament typically requires operative care for continued activity in the sport. Several studies have demonstrated the success of rehabilitation programs post-surgery; however, few studies have examined the role of UCL injury prevention programs. A recognized upper extremity (UE) injury prevention method is the Thrower’s Ten Program. This program may create elbow stability when pitching and throwing, theoretically reducing the risk of UCL injury. Purpose: The purpose …
