Exemplary Chief Nurse Executives Leading Through Storytelling, Tricia Kassab
Exemplary Chief Nurse Executives Leading Through Storytelling, Tricia Kassab
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand and describe how exemplary human resources administrators use storytelling to lead organizations using Denning’s (2011) model. In addition, it was the purpose to understand how they use storytelling to create transformational change. Denning’s The Leader’s Guide to Storytelling highlights eight storytelling narrative patterns: to ignite action, to communicate who you are, to build your brand, to transmit values, to foster collaboration, to share knowledge, to tame the grapevine, and to share vision.
Methodology: This phenomenological qualitative study described the lived experiences of exemplary elementary chief nurse executives in California. The …

"Rise And Shine" Early Ambulation In Surgical Patients, Bhapinder Thiara
"Rise And Shine" Early Ambulation In Surgical Patients, Bhapinder Thiara
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
An assessment done in a hospital unit established low rates of early ambulation for patients in postoperative care. At the same time, early ambulation after surgery has been shown to improve clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Some of the factors for the low rates of early ambulation include inadequate nurse staffing, poor teamwork, and the inability to utilize technology effectively. Consequently, a project was designed to empower nursing staff, promote interprofessional collaboration, and obtain technologies for ambulation. It is expected that the project will improve rates of early ambulation and lower hospital length of stay.
Evaluating Preventative Care And Post-Hospitalization Primary Care Follow-Up In Adults With Intellectual And/Or Developmental Disabilities, Jason Xenakis
NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations
Post-Hospitalization Primary Care Follow-Up Abstract
Title: Characteristics that are associated with primary care follow-up and discharge summary receipt post-hospitalization in adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
Background: Transition from an inpatient to an outpatient setting is a high risk time for patients. Studies in the general population find that poor post-hospitalization primary care follow-up results in higher rates of readmissions – a widely used indicator of healthcare quality. There is no research that evaluates post-hospitalization primary care follow-up or discharge summary receipt in the IDD population.
Objective: To explore the demographic, socioeconomic, and clinical characteristics that are associated with whether …

Case Presentation On Urinary Bladder Cancer And Cysto-Prostatectomy, Tetiana Soloviova
Publications and Research
Patients who have invasive bladder cancer (spread to different tissues and organs) may need to have a radical cystectomy type of surgery. In male patients, the surgeon usually removes the prostate and seminal vesicles in addition to the bladder, parts of the ureters, and lymph nodes (Nicholson, 2017, ¶ 1)
In our case a reconstructive surgery followed right after removing of the bladder and prostate gland. A different way of urine to be stored and passed from the patient’s body was created by the surgeon. A part of small intestine was used to make up a reservoir that will serve …

Service User Interview Panels For Recruitment To Uk Child And Adolescent Mental Health Services: A Questionnaire Study Exploring The Experiences Of Young People, Staff And Candidates, Sophie M. Allan Ms, Emma Travers-Hill Dr
Patient Experience Journal
Service user involvement is increasingly important in health and social care policy, including in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), but evidence evaluating involvement initiatives is lacking. This questionnaire study evaluated the use of young people’s (YP) interview panels in the recruitment of CAMHS staff, from the perspectives of YP, candidates and members of the staff interview panels. Self-report questionnaires were administered to YP, candidates and staff interview panel. This included quantitative and qualitative “free text” responses. YP’s panels were found to be important in hearing the voices of YP; participants all stated they would like YP to take …

Is It Fair To Compare? A Patient And Family Experience Of Two Healthcare Systems And Neurosurgical Teams Within A Two-Week Period, Laura Miller Cpxp
Patient Experience Journal
As the mother of a 28-year-old son with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, and as a healthcare consultant focused on patient experience and professional development, I have a unique perspective and skill set. Recently he experienced symptoms that included an excruciating headache, neck pain and lethargy. Fearing his ventriculoperitoneal shunt had malfunctioned, he went to the emergency room and was later admitted on the neuro inpatient floor for a three-day hospitalization. His original shunt had been placed in 1991, and he never had an issue with until August 2018. While in the hospital, he was informed that he was no longer …

The Cooperative Extension National Framework for Health and Wellness calls for the Cooperative Extension Service (CES) to partner with healthcare professionals to support their patients in preventing illness and promoting health through community education. Strategies to connect the healthcare system with coordinated referrals to community-based health programs can help patients improve health outcomes. The Rx for Health Referral Toolkit pilot project was developed as part of a strategy to align CES’s strengths with the medical community to promote quality healthcare experiences for patients. The toolkit educates healthcare providers about the many health programs offered by CES in Michigan. It helps …
Autonomy, Suffering, And The Practice Of Medicine: A Relational Approach, Michael A. Stanfield
Autonomy, Suffering, And The Practice Of Medicine: A Relational Approach, Michael A. Stanfield
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this project, I argue that the conventional view of personal autonomy that is operational in contemporary American culture, bioethics and medical practice places undue emphasis on individualism and a limited range of personal qualities and attributes (such as self-sufficiency). Instead, I argue in favor of a relational approach to autonomy which recognizes that each person that exists has certain minimal connections or relations to others, and these connections/relations are identity-forming. Unfortunately, current medical practices have tended to overemphasize individuality and choice (consistent with the conventional view) while minimizing or excluding these relational aspects. As a result, informed consent and …

Journey Of The State Budget, Karina Carmichael
Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
In attempts to make government fair and equitable, the process of any bill but especially the budget bill can be extremely convoluted and difficult to follow. I was able to learn how to navigate the system and understand the processes by which things happen at the statehouse.
The statehouse is filled with representatives of countless interest groups all fighting for their opinion of how things should be done. As demonstrated by this budget cycle, government can be a push and pull directed by politics, personal opinions, and countless other factors, which may result in nothing getting done.

Timely Access To Maternal, Neonatal And Child Healthcare For Rural Communities In Rwanda: The Role Of Community Health Workers, Jean Bosco Bigirimana
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Abstract
Introduction: In Rwanda, although there has been some progress in health care delivery as expressed in the reduction in maternal and child mortality, rates are still high and geographically variable. Improving equitable access to quality healthcare services for maternal, neonatal and child healthcare (MNCH), community-based maternal, neonatal and child healthcare (CBMNCH) depends upon using “community health workers” (CHWs). Yet CHWs program faces difficulties that upset delivery of the quality of the comprehensive package of services. Unfortunately, little is known about CHWs` performance and job satisfaction in the provision of CBMNCH.
Goal: The study aimed to provide insight into …

A Background Of The Opioid Epidemic And Its Relationship To The Medicaid Expansion, Er Yearn Jang
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
This paper provides a background to the opioid epidemic in the United States. The opioid epidemic, a public health crisis, is perceived by the public to be caused by issues in the medical field. By providing a historical background to the epidemic, this study demonstrates that the beginnings of the opioid crisis were not only rooted in past issues within the healthcare field but in previous social misconceptions about opioids. This historical backdrop is proceeded by an examination of opioid pharmacology, which discusses what opioids are, what is currently known about opioid addiction and reviews the presently used treatments for …

Child protective services agencies have long observed the complicating role that parental substance use and addiction plays in cases of child maltreatment. Families who struggle with these problems present unique challenges for child welfare professionals. These families are typically more difficult to engage, more likely to have children removed from the home, and have poorer outcomes when compared to other families. These poorer outcomes often include health problems. Addiction has well-known effects on health, and the specific manifestations of these problems for parents have been documented for years in child protection casework. However, what has been less investigated are the …
Tuberculosis, Jessica Puri
Tuberculosis, Jessica Puri
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Tuberculosis (TB) is a curable disease that claims the lives of millions each year. TB is an airborne disease spread by inhaling droplets of the tubercle bacillus. There are two different types of TB related conditions; latent TB infection and active TB disease. During latent TB, an individual inhales droplets of tubercle bacillus but the immune system can fight off this infection. However, once droplets of tubercle bacillus penetrate the alveoli, and colonization of droplets multiply, latent TB transitions into active TB disease (Katanekwa & Dahlback, 2016, p. 9). TB is typically found in the lungs but can also develop …

Background: Over seven million imprisoned and jailed women are released into the community each year and many are ill-equipped to meet the challenges of re-integration. Upon release into their community, women are faced with uncertain barriers and challenges using community services to improve their health and well-being and reuniting with families. Few studies have identified and described the barriers of the community health delivery system (CHDS)- a complex set of social, justice, and healthcare organizations that provide community services aimed to improve the health and well-being (i.e. safety, health, the success of integration, and life satisfaction) of justice-involved women. We …

Improving Healthcare Through Interdisciplinary Education, Jonathan Jacobs, Katreena Collette-Merrill, Rn, Phd
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The culture of education prepares healthcare professionals in silos, then expects them to work collaboratively upon graduation. Medical errors, resulting from communication issues, are considered a leading cause of patient death. Interdisciplinary education of future professionals may prevent communication issues and reduce patient deaths. Interprofessional education (IPE) of undergraduates may improve communication of future professionals educated in universities without medical schools. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effect of interprofessional education (IPE) on undergraduate students’ attitudes of interprofessional work, perceptions of working together, and ratings of teamwork.

Healthcare Access Barriers In Rural America, Lakyn E. Jolly
Healthcare Access Barriers In Rural America, Lakyn E. Jolly
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
- In rural America, the path to accessing healthcare is met with many challenges. These challenges can present geographically and structurally within rural healthcare systems, as well as larger healthcare delivery entities. Due to these access barriers, rural Americans are at higher risk for developing poor health outcomes, as compared to their urban counterparts. Among these are higher mortality and morbidity rates, higher instances of chronic conditions, and higher rates of childhood obesity. Because rural communities are at risk for adverse health outcomes, it is vital that research and policy be geared toward reducing barriers to accessing healthcare within this population. …
Healthcare Access And Poverty Among Central Appalachian Residents, Kacey M. Lefevers
Healthcare Access And Poverty Among Central Appalachian Residents, Kacey M. Lefevers
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
Healthcare access is an important shaping force in the lives of Appalachian people. Appalachians often face both inadequate availability of medical facilities and poverty, which limits access to health insurance and therefore healthcare. This results in reduced life expectancy and health disparity. In this study, the author examines relationships between adequate healthcare and access to healthcare among Appalachian residents. Using a convenience sample of Appalachian residents, the author finds that income, education, and being an Appalachian resident have unique impacts on healthcare access or perceptions of healthcare in general.

Improving Access To Youth-Friendly Health Services In A Rural California Community, Elena Higley
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Adolescents and young adults experience relatively high rates of preventable morbidity and mortality due to injuries, mental health disorders, suicide, substance use, and reproductive health issues. It is paramount for healthcare providers to address risky behaviors early to thwart future adverse outcomes. Rural communities especially struggle with meeting the healthcare needs of their youth because there are fewer resources specifically dedicated to serving adolescents and young adults. This issue is evident in Grass Valley, California, a rural community in Nevada County, an area located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. In response to limited access to youth-friendly healthcare …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Background and Purpose: People living in rural and underserved areas are poorly served by our country's healthcare system. The Federal Office of Rural Health Policy reports that approximately 18% of people in the United States live in rural areas. Within the physician and nursing literature the largest reported predictor of rural practice is having a rural background. Mandated rural medical rotations during training have been shown to positively alter interest in rural practice and employment. While nursing and medical students have been thus studied, limited evidence exists for physical therapists. The objective of this study was to determine how rural …

Introduction: Prostate cancer (PC) is the most common male cancer in the USA. When comparing the incidence and mortality rates of PC, the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results data of 2005–2014 show that Appalachian Kentucky had a lower incidence (113/100 000 v 137/100 000) but a higher mortality rate (23.8% v 21.8%) when compared to non-Appalachian Kentucky. The aim of this study was to further characterize the survival disparities of PC between Appalachian and non-Appalachian Kentucky.
Methods: All stages of PC patients diagnosed between 2007 and 2011 were collected through the Kentucky Cancer Registry. Baseline characteristics and survival outcomes were …
