The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are 2.9 million registered nurses in the U.S who practice in a variety of settings including faith communities. Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a potentially fatal, inherited disorder of muscle hypermetabolism that occurs after a person is exposed to commonly used volatile anesthetic agents (sevoflurane, desflurane, isoflurane) and/or the depolarizing muscle relaxant, succinylcholine (Diu & Mancuso, 2012). The MH mortality rate has decreased from 80% in the 1960s to less than 5% in 2006 due to increased clinical awareness of manifestations, pathophysiology, and improvement in perioperative monitoring (Rosenberg, Pollock, Schiemann, Bulger, & Stowell, 2015). The researchers evaluated the effectiveness of continuing education training in Motivational Interviewing (MI) for addiction counselors. Participants reported a significant increase in counseling self-efficacy and 86.8% reported increasing MI use in their practice. Only 3.9%, however, participated in post-training consultation.

Literature is beginning to emerge which states that participation in natural environments can be restorative, provide much needed physical activity and assist with health promotion and prevention of illness. Theories such as Attention Restoration Theory (Kaplan, 1995) and Biophilia Hypothesis (Wilson, 1993) support the benefits for participation in natural outdoor environments. Health benefits of participation in nature including accessing Vitamin D, improving balance, attention restoration, reduced myopia, stress reduction are widely present in literature. Occupational therapy practitioners are qualified to address the emergence of functional deficits from cancer-related cognitive impairments (CRCI); however, they have reported a need to address gaps in their knowledge of CRCI. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively design, disseminate and examine the impact of implementing a face-to-face continuing education seminar designed to enhance occupational therapy practitioners’ knowledge of CRCI in adults and older adults. Purpose: Continuing education (CE) is intended to help clinicians maintain competence, develop and advance knowledge and skills, and enhance knowledge, skills, and abilities beyond the levels required for entry-level practice. Based on previous literature, the current mode of CE in athletic training does not appear to be helping clinicians maintain competence. The purpose of this research was to validate a comprehensive assessment based on the Role Delineation Study/Practice Analysis (6th ed.) through item analysis and estimates of reliability to be used to assess athletic trainers’ actual knowledge.
