Quality Evaluation Tool For Clinician Online Continuing Medical Education, Brittany Rosen, Gary Kreps, James M. Bishop Mr., Skye L. Mcdonald
Health Behavior Research
The purpose of this study was to develop and assess an instrument evaluating the quality of online continuing medical education interventions for clinicians. A review of seminal literature for evaluating health-related websites was conducted to incorporate best practices from health education, health communication, and web-based design principles. After reviewing the literature, 12 preliminary quality indicators were developed. Two independent coders used the preliminary quality indicators to code continuing medical education interventions. Internal reliability of the preliminary indicators was calculated using the Krippendorff’s alpha coefficient. After completing the reliability testing and revising the tool, the quality evaluation framework consisted of six …

Neurology residency offers a comprehensive training program over 4 years in management of various neurological disorders. Epilepsy represents a common condition managed by neurologists and forms a core curriculum in the training of neurology residents. We conducted an anonymous survey among the trainees at our neurology program to identify knowledge and treatment gaps and help us modify our training regimens to provide high impact and good quality training to our trainees. We conducted a 35-question survey to determine various aspects of our neurology residents’ training to identify and overcome shortfalls. Our program requirements are rigorous and match up with those …

Academic Service-Learning Experience Embraces The Vincentian Mission In Physician Assistant Education, Alyssa Quinlan, Pamela Gregory-Fernandez, Corinne Alois, Carla Hernandez Goodman
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Motivated by the belief that health care is a basic human right and driven by a Vincentian mission, St. John’s University Physician Assistant Program incorporates service minded educational experiences created to expose students to the necessity to reach those most in need—“the poor, alienated and the aged.” In Spring 2018, in conjunction with the SJU Academic Service-Learning program, a geriatric service assignment was integrated into the geriatric course curriculum. Working with Selfhelp Virtual Senior Center, local senior centers and nursing homes, students participated in an outreach project to serve senior citizens. Students shared their experiences through reflection and pre- …

Patient Perspectives: Four Pillars Of Professionalism, Laura Yvonne Bulk, Donna Drynan, Sue Murphy, Patricia Gerber, Roberta Bezati, Sacha Trivett, Tal Jarus
Patient Experience Journal
Professionalism is a core component of healthcare practice and education; however, there is often not a consistent description of professionalism, and current definitions lack a key perspective: that of the patient. This study aimed to deepen understandings of patients’ perspectives on how professionalism should be enacted by healthcare providers. Using a phenomenological approach informed by constructivist theory, the study team conducted semi-structured interviews and focus groups with 21 patients to ascertain their views on professionalism. Data analysis was conducted using a constant comparative approach wherein initial analysis informed subsequent data collection. Participant themes fell into four pillars of professionalism: taking …

The objective of this paper is to introduce selected statistical and epidemiologic topics that are of interest to interdisciplinary teams of healthcare quality professionals, educators, technical staff, and researchers who participate in clinical simulation scholarship. Four research vignettes in the setting of a hypothetical clinical simulation training workshop are presented. The first vignette illustrates the utility of exact logistic regression when analyzing a small dataset. The second underscores the importance of using an appropriate method to account for the repeated measurement of an outcome. The third illustrates the use of the intraclass correlation coefficient to measure inter-rater reliability. The final …

Pharmacy and Wellness Review
Introductory pharmacy practice experience (IPPE) hours are a means of integrating experiential education as a key role early on in pharmacy education. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) has offered little guidance on mandatory and specific objectives to accomplish during IPPE hours, thus it is possible that preceptors do not feel adequately prepared, nor do they have a full understanding of what is required of them when they agree to precept an IPPE student. Given the lack of previous research conducted, the objective of this study was to obtain an understanding of the general attitude that preceptors have toward …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Background: The various pressures on nurses in their practice environment, given the complexity of care, have exposed the confusion around the role definition and level of professional identity (PI) of future nurses. To support them in their practice, it is important throughout their education to know their commitment, representations, and sense of identity with respect to their future profession. To our knowledge, there is no measurement tool in the literature that can be used to measure the PI of nursing students throughout their education, given its complex multidimensional nature.
Objective: Based on a framework that takes into account …
