The Investigation Of Viability And Body Measurements For Water Buffalo Calves, Koray Çeli̇keloğlu, Serdar Koçak, Meti̇n Erdoğan, Zehra Bozkurt, Mustafa Tekerli̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The viability and body measurements of calves raised in the Livestock Research Center of Afyon Kocatepe University between 2008 and 2011 were investigated. The research was conducted on 188 calves of buffalo cows brought from different regions of Turkey. The viability of buffalo calves at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months of age was 0.95, 0.90, 0.90, and 0.89, respectively. Live weights, height at withers, rump height, body length, chest depth, chest width, rump width, and chest and cannon-bone circumferences were 30.41 kg and 72.37, 74.21, 56.52, 26.34, 15.80, 17.00, 73.13, and 12.88 cm at birth; 118.47 kg and 97.12, …

A Diagnostic Survey Of Neospora Caninum Infection In Aborted Fetuses In The Middle Black Sea Region And Sivas Province, Turkey, Mustafa Açici, Cenk Soner Bölükbaş, Gökmen Zafer Pekmezci̇, Hande Gürler, Oktay Genç, Ali̇ Tümay Gürler, Selma Kaya, Şi̇nasi̇ Umur Jan 2019

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Neospora caninum is a major, cosmopolitan, protozoan parasite associated with abortion in cattle and water buffaloes. In this study, real-time PCR was used for the detection and quantification of the burden of N. caninum infections in aborted fetuses in the Middle Black Sea Region and Sivas Province of Turkey. In total, N. caninum DNA was detected in 44 of the 89 (49.4%) aborted fetuses of the cattle and water buffalo from 89 different farms. The authors conclude that the pervasiveness of neosporosis is a threat to cattle breeding in the Middle Black Sea Region and Sivas Province. Real-time PCR testing …

Morphometric Analysis Of The Skulls Of Domestic Cattle (Bos Taurus L.) And Water Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis L.) In Turkey, Ermi̇ş Özkan, Abu Bakar Siddiq, Ki̇fayet Oya Kahveci̇oğlu, Muhsi̇n Öztürk, Vedat Onar Jan 2019

Morphometric Analysis Of The Skulls Of Domestic Cattle (Bos Taurus L.) And Water Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis L.) In Turkey, Ermi̇ş Özkan, Abu Bakar Siddiq, Ki̇fayet Oya Kahveci̇oğlu, Muhsi̇n Öztürk, Vedat Onar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A total of 20 domestic cattle (Bos taurus L.) and 15 water buffalo (Bubalis bubalis L.) skulls were analyzed in this study. All of the specimens belonged to female individuals. Using a total of 27 craniometric measurements from each of the skulls, 9 indices were calculated. Although there were statistically significant differences between the linear measurements of the skulls of both species, while calculating the indices with their ratios, the values of the measurements of the facial area were determinative in the craniology. Among these indices, the facial index 1 value was statistically significant (P < 0.01) in the comparison of these two species. On the other hand, while considering the orbit and foramen magnum measurements, in contrast with the transversal measurement, the height was more determinant for their index and form.

Genotyping Of Prolactin, Kappa Casein, And Pituitary Transcription Factor 1 Genes Of The Anatolian Water Buffalo Population In The Kızılırmak Delta, Emi̇ne Toparslan, Levent Mercan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Thirty-five Anatolian water buffalo were selected from among a total of almost 7000 animals from 11 herds in the Kızılırmak Delta, which is known to be one of the most important areas for water buffalo farming in Turkey. The cleaved amplified polymorphic sequences (CAPS) method was used to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms at 3 loci that are associated with milk production, namely PRL, CSN3, and PIT-1, which are associated with milk processing and milk yields, respectively. Sequence-tagged sites of PRL, CSN3, and PIT-1 were digested by restriction endonucleases RsaI, HindIII, and HinfI, respectively. Capillary electrophoretic analysis identified all samples as belonging …
