Rubber Band Syndrome In A Dyspneic Dog, Nithida Boonwittaya, Saroch Kaewmanee

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The rubber band syndrome has been reported inboth human and animal patients but the number of cases shows it is an uncommon condition. Most cases live in communities where a rubber band is commonly used for a wide variety of purposes. Here we report a case of a dyspneic dog with a linear constricting scar and a discharging sinus on the ventral neck. The radiography showed constructive signs. Surgical exploration found a colored rubber band burrowing into the tracheal lumen. Following surgery, the dog recovered without any complications in the postoperative follow-up period. This case emphasized that rubber band syndrome …

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) has been reported to be a prognostic indicator of human malignant melanoma (MM), lymphoma, renal cell carcinoma and prostate cancer. In veterinary medicine, elevation of serum LDH has been reported in canine lymphoma and mammary gland tumors. However, the expression of the LDH in oral tumor-bearing dogs has not been elucidated. In this study, serum LDH levels were evaluated and compared between healthy dogs (control; n = 20) and oral tumor-bearing dogs (n = 34). Half of the tumor-bearing dogs (17dogs) had oral MM, followed by 6 dogs with oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), 4 dogs with …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Trochleoplastyor trochlear groove deepening is one of surgical correction techniques for patellar luxation (PL) that caused cartilage alterations of the distal femur and this technique may not be always necessary. To evaluate trochlear groove for PL correction preoperative planning, several diagnostic image techniques have been applied. In this study, ultrasonography (USG) was introduced in the trochlear evaluation as pre-operative planning because it’s user-friendly and radiationless. USG imaging of 22 distal femurs from small breed of canine cadavers were evaluated for trochlear groove depth (TGD) and trochlear cartilage thicknesses (CT) at medial condyle (MCCT), femoral groove (FGCT) and lateral condyle (LCCT), …

Efficacy Of Ultrasonic Dissection Device In Staphylectomy Surgery In Brachycephalic Airway Obstructive Syndrome (Baos) Dogs, Sunisa Thunyodom, Marissak Kalpravidh, Chanin Kalpravidh, Wijit Banlunara, Pasakorn Brikshavana

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The ultrasonic scalpel instrument was compared with the conventional staphylectomy technique in elongated soft palate surgery in twenty brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome (BAOS) canines. Patients were randomly divided into the conventional incisional and ultrasonic scalpel group. Operation time (minute), bleeding volume (ml), respiratory distress score, postoperative complications score, pain scores, epithelialization score and inflammatory score were assessed. Two weeks after surgery, soft palates tissues were biopsied from 7 conventional surgery dogs and 8 ultrasonic dissection device applied dogs. The operation time and bleeding volume in the conventional surgery group were significantly higher than that in conventional group (P<0.01 and P<0.001, respectively). In addition, the respiratory distress score was significantly higher in the conventional surgery group compared with the ultrasonic dissection device group on day 3 and day 28 post-operation (P<0.05). There were no significantly different postoperative complication scores, pain scores or inflammatory scores between two groups. The epithelialization score of the UD was significantly higher than that of the conventional group (P<0.05). The ultrasonic dissection device is user friendly, has decreased surgical time, complete hemostasis and provides fewer postoperative complications. The ultrasonic dissection device is recommended in high-risk patients such as those displaying senility, chronic inflammation, or bleeding disorders.

© 2019 The Authors. Epilepsia Open published by Wiley Periodicals Inc. on behalf of International League Against Epilepsy. Epilepsy is a common neurologic disorder in humans and domesticated canines. In both species the etiology is diverse and complex, and even with medication a significant portion of the population does not experience sufficient seizure control and/or has unacceptable side effects. Humans often try alternatives such as dietary therapy or brain surgery, but in dogs, brain surgery is rarely an option and, despite potential benefits, there are no standard recommendations for a dietary approach. Herein we describe 2 retrospective case studies detailing …
