Efficacy Of Competitive Exclusion To Reduce Salmonella In Broiler Chickens, Nattaporn Jiratitipat, Prapasri Srikhong, Wisanu Wanasawaeng, Niwat Chansiripornchai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Competitive exclusion (CE) relies on the activity of normal flora to limit intestinal colonization by enteric pathogens. This study aims to investigate the effects of CEon Salmonellainfectionin broilers. The protective effect of CE on Salmonella cecal colonization was evaluated in 1 day-old chicks. In the laboratory trial, CE products were administered by oral inoculation, drinking water and whole body spray. Three days after treatment, the chickens were challenged with 107cfu/mL of SalmonellaEnteritidisorally, and were evaluated for 10 days. The CE-treated chickens showed comparable protection andthe number of Salmonella in the cecal contents significantly decreased(P<0.05)compared with those of the positive control. In the farm trial,CE was administeredby whole body spray at the hatchery and the second was administered by drinking water and evaluated at 32 and 42 days, respectively. The CE significantly reduced Salmonellacontamination in the farm trial andno Salmonellawas detected in the cecal contents compared with the control group. Average body weight gains, feed conversion ratioand theperformance indexof the chickens were greater than thecontrol group. Thus, the use of CEhad a positive effect on broiler performance. Furthermore, the CE-treated chickens displayed greater intestinal histology including villous height, submuscular layerand cell mitosis. These studies demonstrate that CEwas able to protect chickens from Salmonella cecalcolonization and it is apparent that new methodologies associated with the development of a workable CE program are needed in thepoultry industry.

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study aimed to establish a business model of reproductive biotechnology in small ruminant. Sets of questionnaires were administered to interview 115 farmers from different regions in Thailand. Data including age, educational background, farm size and type, source of replacement breeders, breeding technology, farm problems and attitude toward the technology were collected. Logistic regression analysis along with neutral network analysis was used to identify factors associated technology interest with P< 0.05. Results showed that among 115 participants, 72.2% were interested in reproductive biotechnology. In univariate logistic regression analysis, farmer’s age [OR=0.96, 95% CI (0.93,1.00)], educational background [OR=1.17, 95% CI (0.13,0.80)], production problems [OR=1.28, 95% CI (1.12,1.478)] and marketing problems [OR=1.40, 95% CI (1.18,1.67)] were independently associated with technology interest (P< 0.05). Similar to the neural network analysis, farmer’s age, overall farm problems, marketing problems, production problems and educational background were the primary factors influencing technology interest of farmers. Next, the data from 18 semi-structured interviews were interpreted to establish suggested business models of reproductive biotechnology package. This indicated that a single business model could not fit the expectation of all farmers. Thus, six business models were established and 2 models were initially implemented in 7 farms with a moderate successful rate. In conclusion, the implement ofreproductive biotechnology in small ruminant farm should be addressed to the young farmers with high education to improve the animal genetic value and sustain their livelihoods. However, the different farm managements play a key role in the success of these business models.

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The expression patterns of neurotrophins(NTs) at the gene and protein level including nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3),and TrkB receptor were investigated in the prehierarchical follicles of Zi Geese by RT-qPCR and Western blotting analysis. The mRNA levels of NGF, BDNF, NT-3and TrkBreceptor increased significantly in the small white follicles (SWF), and more interesting by BDNFand NT-3transcripts were not detectable in small yellow follicles (SYF) marked as the last stage of prehierarchical ovarian development before transition into preovulatory follicles. Western blot revealed the presence of all the target neurotrophins and high-affinity receptor at the protein level …

Epidemiology Of Characteristics And Risk Factors For Overweight In Cats Visiting An Animal Hospital In Bangkok, Thailand, Vachira Hunprasit, Chaiyot Tanrattana, Siwaporn Pengpis

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the prevalence and to investigate the characteristics of overweight/obese cats visiting an animal hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. Electronic medical records of feline patient visiting the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Chulalongkorn University between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017 were reviewed. The cat’s information included age, breed, sex, neutering status and body condition score. Associated demographic factors and overweight/obesity using idealweight as a reference was performed by logistic regression. The prevalence of feline overweight/obesity was 8.1% (95%CI: 7.4% - 8.9%). From the multivariable logistic regression, age, sex, neutering status, breed and interaction of age …

Efficacy Of Ultrasonic Dissection Device In Staphylectomy Surgery In Brachycephalic Airway Obstructive Syndrome (Baos) Dogs, Sunisa Thunyodom, Marissak Kalpravidh, Chanin Kalpravidh, Wijit Banlunara, Pasakorn Brikshavana

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The ultrasonic scalpel instrument was compared with the conventional staphylectomy technique in elongated soft palate surgery in twenty brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome (BAOS) canines. Patients were randomly divided into the conventional incisional and ultrasonic scalpel group. Operation time (minute), bleeding volume (ml), respiratory distress score, postoperative complications score, pain scores, epithelialization score and inflammatory score were assessed. Two weeks after surgery, soft palates tissues were biopsied from 7 conventional surgery dogs and 8 ultrasonic dissection device applied dogs. The operation time and bleeding volume in the conventional surgery group were significantly higher than that in conventional group (P<0.01 and P<0.001, respectively). In addition, the respiratory distress score was significantly higher in the conventional surgery group compared with the ultrasonic dissection device group on day 3 and day 28 post-operation (P<0.05). There were no significantly different postoperative complication scores, pain scores or inflammatory scores between two groups. The epithelialization score of the UD was significantly higher than that of the conventional group (P<0.05). The ultrasonic dissection device is user friendly, has decreased surgical time, complete hemostasis and provides fewer postoperative complications. The ultrasonic dissection device is recommended in high-risk patients such as those displaying senility, chronic inflammation, or bleeding disorders.

Combination Of Rock Inhibitor, Hypoxia And Melatonin Improved Differentiation Of Rabbit Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Into Cardiac Progenitor Cells, Praopilas Phakdeedindan, Piyathip Setthawong, Mongkol Techakumphu, Theerawat Tharasanit

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Cardiac progenitors are a promising cell source for treating myocardial infarction. In this study, we improved the protocol for cardiac differentiation of rabbit induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) using Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) inhibitor (Y-27632), low O2 tension (hypoxia) and melatonin treatments. In experiment 1, the rabbit iPSCs were differentiated into cardiac cell fate via embryoid body (EB) formation with or without ROCK inhibitor. EB diameters were measured on day 3 of differentiation. In experiment 2, the EBs were plated on gelatin-coated dishes and further cultured in different oxygen tensions, hypoxia (5% oxygen) and normoxia (20% oxygen). The plated EBs …
