Radiation In Its Origin: Health Risks Resulting From Prolonged Exposure To Radon, Tetiana Soloviova, Evans Lespinasse Nov 2018

Radiation In Its Origin: Health Risks Resulting From Prolonged Exposure To Radon, Tetiana Soloviova, Evans Lespinasse

Publications and Research

Among non-smokers, radon is the number one cause of lung cancer, and the second cause of lung cancer overall, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Radon cannot be detected through one's sense of sight, smell, hearing, taste or touch. The only way to detect it is by testing certain spaces or environments with specialized instruments. This radioactive gas is present in trace quantities in the earth and produced by decaying uranium. It enters buildings through cracks in walls, floors, construction joints or gaps around service pipes, electrical wires and sump pits. It emits heavy nuclear fragments of alpha particles (two …

Background & Hypothesis: Research has revealed a high prevalence of depression, anxiety, and burnout among medical students accompanied by widespread lack of treatment. We hypothesize that by leveraging our study findings examining the use of telemental health(TMH) among youth (ages 14-24) alongside results from existing research focused on the mental health needs of medical students (median age at start 22-24 years old), we will gain valuable insight into the potential for TMH to address the needs of this high-risk population.

Methods: Using the Delphi method, a sample of 25 experts were surveyed anonymously, thus avoiding group pressure for conformity while …

Determining The Effects Of Cancer Mutations On The Coactivator Function Of The P300 Core Domain In Human Cells, Katlyn Myers, Erin Shanle, Meagan St. John Apr 2018

Determining The Effects Of Cancer Mutations On The Coactivator Function Of The P300 Core Domain In Human Cells, Katlyn Myers, Erin Shanle, Meagan St. John

Selected Publications

In human cells, DNA is packed into chromosomes by wrapping around proteins called histones. Histone proteins contain chains of amino acids called histone tails and can be modified by acetylation. Acetylating histone proteins is important to the cell because it opens up the chromatin and allows for gene expression. Proteins can recognize and bind histone acetylation with a region called a bromodomain. p300 is a bromodomain-containing protein with histone acetyltransferase activity (HAT) which also aids with gene expression and is a coactivator protein of transcription. The bromodomain and HAT domain of this protein is considered the p300 core. Previous research …

Brain Science = Biology + Engineering, Jennifer Welborn, Guangyu Xu, Morton Sternheim, Chris Emery Jan 2018

Brain Science = Biology + Engineering, Jennifer Welborn, Guangyu Xu, Morton Sternheim, Chris Emery

Science and Engineering Saturday Seminars

This interdisciplinary (physical and life sciences) seminar exposes participants to cutting edge research at UMASS, Amherst, on cell imaging using a chip which gathers a variety of data on the activities of single cells. Part of the seminar will be a presentation of current research in this area, followed by hands-on activities and a visit to the lab where this research is conducted. Application of this new technology to brain research will be discussed as well as the NGSS standards alignment and classroom applications at various levels and disciplines.

Implementation Of A School-Wide, Epa-Based Acting Internship Curriculum, Adam Garber Jan 2018

Implementation Of A School-Wide, Epa-Based Acting Internship Curriculum, Adam Garber

Health Sciences Education Symposium

Objectives. The core entrustable professional activities for entering residency (Core EPAs) were established by the AAMC as a framework to assess competency. The Acting Internship (AI) rotation is an excellent space to assess core EPAs, however many institutions have no structured AI curriculum. Our goal is to develop a standardized, school-wide AI curriculum that includes evaluation and assessment of designated core EPAs. Method. At our institution, two non-departmental AI directors were directed to oversee all AI rotations across the school and implement goals, objectives, and curriculum focused around specific core EPAs. A clinical skills-focused curriculum combining a mix of didactic …

Emergency Medicine Elective Impact On Third-Year Medical Student Specialty Choice, Nathan Lewis Jan 2018

Emergency Medicine Elective Impact On Third-Year Medical Student Specialty Choice, Nathan Lewis

Health Sciences Education Symposium

Emergency Medicine (EM) is a competitive, sought-after specialty among medical students (1). National standardized curricula have been developed for both third-year (M3) and fourth-year (M4) rotations (2-3), however, there is variability in course implementation (4). Additionally, it is unclear to what extent earlier rotations help students choose a specialty. We developed a two-week elective course to allow M3 students exposure to EM earlier than previously allowed at our medical school. Students were asked to complete an entry survey describing their specialty interests and sources of influence. During the course, students were encouraged to observe the environment and speak to providers, …

Comparison Of Two Methods Of Determining Central Corneal Vault Under A Scleral Lens: Estimation By Slit Lamp Biomicroscope And Anterior Segment Oct, Claire E. Mcdonnell, Darragh O'Donnell, Lynn O'Mara, Shannon Power Jan 2018

Comparison Of Two Methods Of Determining Central Corneal Vault Under A Scleral Lens: Estimation By Slit Lamp Biomicroscope And Anterior Segment Oct, Claire E. Mcdonnell, Darragh O'Donnell, Lynn O'Mara, Shannon Power

Conference Papers

Purpose: The aim of this study was to ascertain if there is agreement in the measurement of central corneal vault (CCV) under a scleral lens, between estimations made using a slit lamp biomicroscope (SLB) and measurements made using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

Method: 30 images were taken of CCV under various scleral lenses using a SLB and an AS-OCT. Estimations of CCV from SLB photographs were made using known thicknesses of the scleral lenses used and imagej software. The in-built measurement callipers was used to measure CCV on the AS-OCT. Right eyes were imaged on the AS-OCT first …
