The Correlation Between Residual Renal Function And Inflammation In Chronic Hemodialysis Patients, Ashraf A. Dawood, Elsayed G. Mahros, Khaled M. Amin El Zorkany, Said S. Ahmed Khamis, Yassin S. Yassin
Menoufia Medical Journal
Objective The aim of the study was to study any possible correlation between inflammation and residual renal function (RRF) in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients. Background RRF plays an important role in maintaining fluid balance, phosphorus control, nutrition, and removal of middle molecular uremic toxins. Decline of RRF also contributes significantly to anemia, inflammation, and malnutrition in patients on dialysis. Inflammation and activation of acute-phase responses are common in chronic kidney disease patients. The causes of inflammation in HD patients are multifactorial. Inflammatory reaction may originate from several sources, including graft or fistula infections, bioincompatible dialysis membrane, dialysate, endotoxin exposure, back …

Analysis Of The Local And Systemic Cytokine Response Profiles In Patients With Community-Acquired Pneumonia. Relationship With Disease Severity And Outcomes., Rafael Fernandez-Botran, Timothy Lee Wiemken, Robert R. Kelley, Paula Peyrani, Jose Bordon, Rodrigo Cavallazzi, Julio A. Ramirez
The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
The goals of this study were to investigate the relationship of systemic and local cytokine responses with time to clinical stability (TCS) in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and to develop a model to integrate multiple cytokine data into “cytokine response profiles” based on local vs. systemic and pro- vs. anti-inflammatory cytokine patterns in order to better understand their relationships with measures of CAP severity and outcomes. Forty hospitalized patients enrolled through the Community Acquired Pneumonia Inflammatory Study Group (CAPISG) were analyzed. Based on the ranked distribution of the levels of eight different pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines (IL-1b, IL-6, IL-8, …

Effect Of Tlr4 Antagonist On Immune Responses Of Bovine Endometrial Cells, Sroisuda Chotimanukul, Theerawat Swangchan-Uthai, Junpen Suwimonteerabutr, Mongkol Techakumphu
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Bovine endometritis is one of the most common reproductive diseases and causes important economic losses. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria is recognized by Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). Binding of LPS and TLR4 mediates the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. This study aimed to access the effect of TLR4 antagonist (RsLPS) on the immune responses of bovine endometrial cells. Primary culture of bovine endometrial cells were challenged with LPS (100 ng/ml) after treated with and without RsLPS (5000 ng/ml). Endometrial cells without RsLPS and LPS treatment served as control. The mRNA expression of TLR4, CD14, TNF, IL1B and IL8 were …

Background/aim: We calculated the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) for estimating insulin sensitivity and beta-cell function in normal, healthy nondiabetics with infections (malaria, influenza, HIV, Helicobacter pylori, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and hepatitis C virus), type 2 diabetic black patients, and healthy controls from Kinshasa, DR Congo. Materials and methods: A case-control study was carried out between 2006 and 2007 for black Central African participants managed for HOMA.Results: In total, 219 patients and 110 healthy controls were matched for sex and age. The hyperbolic product for 85 infected patients occupied an intermediate position between the hyperbolic product for 110 controls and that of …

Background/aim: We investigated the role of body flora and chronic inflammatory infections in the etiology of allergic disorders in Turkish children. Materials and methods: Forty pediatric asthma patients with positive skin prick tests and 40 age-matched healthy subjects with negative skin prick tests were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Serum H. pylori IgG, viral hepatitis serology, IL-10, and TGF-beta levels were measured. Stool and throat cultures were taken and tested for occurrence of microorganisms. Results: A significantly higher percentage of nonatopic subjects tested positive for anti-H. pylori antibodies compared to atopic subjects (60% vs. 20%). Serum IL-10 levels were also …

Background/aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the serum concentration of main chemokines and interferons in patients with diagnosed endometriosis. Materials and methods: A total of 160 women were divided in two study groups (group 1 - endometriosis; group 2 - healthy women). Serum levels of IFN-α, IFN-γ, MCP-1, MIP-1α, MIP-1β, RANTES, eotaxin, IL-8, MIG, IP-10, and IL-17A were measured with Human Multiplex Cytokine Panels. Results. Serum levels of IFN-γ, MCP-1, and IL-8 were significantly higher (mean 14.03, 57.24, and 534.24, respectively, compared to 0.58, 20.51, and 259.82, respectively), and serum levels of IP-10 and eotaxin were significantly …

The current study describes the use of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein (IL-1Ra) as a possible strategy for optimizing tendon healing and repair by presenting histologically visible changes in rabbit Achilles tendon tissue after longitudinal tenotomy. The study was carried out on 26 Californian rabbits divided into two equal groups. One was the experimental IRAP (interleukin-1 receptor antagonist) group and the second one was the PBS (purified buffered saline) group. The PBS group was the control group. After longitudinal tenotomy in both groups of rabbits, in the IRAP group IL-1Ra was applied locally, whereas PBS was applied in the control group. …
