Molecular Identification Of Bovine Papillomaviruses In Dairy And Beef Cattle: First Description Of Xi- And Epsilonpapillomavirus In Turkey, Veysel Soydal Ataseven, Özgür Kanat, Yaşar Ergün

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In the current study, 23 papilloma/tumor-like samples obtained from cattle having clinical lesions and 9 blood samples collected from healthy-appearing cattle in Turkey were examined for bovine papillomavirus (BPV) DNA using the degenerate primers FAP59/64, and the different types of BPV were distinguished by type-specific primer sets. Furthermore, histopathological studies of papillomavirus were performed. A total of 7 BPV types (BPVs 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9), including genera Deltapapillomavirus, Xipapillomavirus, and Epsilonpapillomavirus, were identified. In all samples, BPV-1 was the most common genotype (90.6%). Overall, coinfections were determined in 26 of the examined samples (81.3%), and coinfection with …

Molecular Characterization Of The Bovine Noroviruses From Diarrheic Calves In Turkey, İrem Gülaçti, İbrahi̇m Sözdutmaz, Hakan Işidan Jan 2016

Molecular Characterization Of The Bovine Noroviruses From Diarrheic Calves In Turkey, İrem Gülaçti, İbrahi̇m Sözdutmaz, Hakan Işidan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, we performed a survey to detect bovine noroviruses (BNoVs) in Turkey between 2009 and 2011 using 235 fecal samples from neonatal calves with diarrhea that were analyzed by nested reverse-transcription RT-PCR, using primers located in the consensus sequences of the BNoV RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) gene. The BNoV RdRp gene was detected in 1.7% (4/235) of samples by nested RT-PCR. The nucleotide sequences of partial RdRp fragments from the BNoV isolates including the newly identified Turkish isolates showed more than 86.3% nt and 96.8% aa identity with each other. Interestingly, in a comparison of the nt and …

Cryopreservation Of Seabream (Sparus Aurata) Semen And Fertility, Mehmet Borga Tirpan, Erkut Dervi̇ş Özgöray, Havva Alemdar, Ergün Akçay Jan 2016

Cryopreservation Of Seabream (Sparus Aurata) Semen And Fertility, Mehmet Borga Tirpan, Erkut Dervi̇ş Özgöray, Havva Alemdar, Ergün Akçay

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the aim was to reveal spermatological parameters of seabream (Sparus aurata), freezing ability of semen in different extenders, and fertilization capacity of frozen seabream semen. The study was conducted with 10 male and 6 female brooder seabreams. Female fish were synchronized by photoperiod and water temperature in the breeding season. Four different extenders [Mounib, Salty Mounib, Ringer, and sea water (1% NaCl)] including 10% dimethyl sulfoxide were used to assess the freezing ability of seabream semen. After postthaw spermatological examinations, three successful extenders (Mounib, Ringer, 1% NaCl) were chosen for the fertilization stage and 2 control and …

Canine Brucellosis In Turkey From An Environmental Perspective, Uçkun Sai̇t Uçan Jan 2016

Canine Brucellosis In Turkey From An Environmental Perspective, Uçkun Sai̇t Uçan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease that affects not only livestock with economical losses but also human beings by causing serious health problems worldwide. Canine brucellosis has largely been overlooked in the world. In Turkey, brucellosis has also been one of the major concerns for decades. Canine brucellosis in this country has been reviewed and discussed from an environmental perspective in this review. As a part of prevention measures, one of the urgent practices that should be applied is to expand the routine examinations to include serological testing for all animals on arrival to kennels and then to decide the fate …

Mycoplasma Infections In Dairy Cattle Farms In Turkey, Zafer Sayin, Asli Sakmanoğlu, Uçkun Sai̇t Uçan, Ali̇ Uslu, Hasan Hüseyi̇n Hadi̇mli̇, Zeki̇ Aras, Özgür Özdemi̇r, Osman Ergani̇ş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Mycoplasmas cause the most severe and economically costly diseases of cattle throughout the world. In this study, Mycoplasma species were isolated from calves and cows with suspected mycoplasmosis in Holstein dairy cattle farms within 7 geographical regions of Turkey between May 2010 and December 2015. Mycoplasma infections were positive in 17 (80.9%) of 21 dairy cattle farms and the overall percentage was calculated as 32.1%. The highest isolation rate occurred in the Southeastern Anatolia Region (42.8%), and the lowest was observed in the Mediterranean Region (19.6%). In total, 172 Mycoplasma spp. were isolated from samples. Using PCR analysis, 149 (87.6%) …

The Effect Of Seasonal Variations On The Occurrence Of Certain Mycotoxins Inconcentrate Feeds For Cattle Collected From Some Provinces In Turkey, Hüsametti̇n Eki̇ci̇, Ebru Yildirim, Ender Yarsan Jan 2016

The Effect Of Seasonal Variations On The Occurrence Of Certain Mycotoxins Inconcentrate Feeds For Cattle Collected From Some Provinces In Turkey, Hüsametti̇n Eki̇ci̇, Ebru Yildirim, Ender Yarsan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of seasonal variations on the occurrence of total aflatoxin (AFTotal), aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), ochratoxin A (OTA), and total fumonisin (Ftotal) in the commercially mixed ruminant feed obtained from feed mills located in Ankara, Kırıkkale, Çankırı, Çorum, and Kırşehir provinces using the enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) method. To represent the annual production, 22 samples were collected every quarter over 1 year (a total of 88 samples) starting in September 2012. AFTotal and AFB1 were detected in 72 samples (81.81%), OTA in 84 samples (95.45%), and Ftotal in 83 samples (94.31%). When seasonal …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Babesiosis, theileriosis, and anaplasmosis are the tick-borne diseases of cattle in most of the tropical areas and Turkey. A total of 270 cattle were randomly selected from 27 villages and 77 farms in the Black Sea Region of Turkey for the determination of infections by Babesia bigemina and Anaplasma marginale by using the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test and the competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA). Of those, 242 and 256 sera were also analyzed for antibodies against Theileria annulata and Babesia bovis infections using the IFA test, respectively, during the period of June 2006 to June 2007. Of the 256 …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Schmallenberg virus (SBV) infection emerged in European domestic and wild ruminants in 2011. There is very limited information about the characterization of SBV isolates and the epidemiology of its infections in the rest of world, except for in European countries. We investigated the circulation of SBV in cattle herds in Central Anatolia, Turkey, in 2013. A total of 180 whole-blood samples were analyzed using real-time RT-PCR. The presence of SBV RNA was detected in 6 (3.3%) samples. For phylogenetic analysis and confirmation of real-time RT-PCR results, the S gene segment was amplified, sequenced, and compared to other segments. In addition, …
