Schistosomiasis is a snail-borne trematode infection in man and animals in tropical and subtropical countries. It is an economically important disease caused by several Schistosoma species and results in economic losses through mortality and morbidity from severe infection and from long-term effect of moderate- and long-standing chronic infection. The purpose of this study was to determine how the management strategies used by producers on sheep and goat farms in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont could affect the fecal egg counts of the parasite called Haemonchus contortus in their animals. Surveys about management practices and fecal samples from the juvenile and adult populations were collected during the months of June, July, and August in the summer of 2015. Phospholipase D (PLD) is a major virulence determinant of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Various studies have focused on the expression of recombinant PLD (rPLD) enzyme in different Escherichia coli strains, but generally a high yield of insoluble protein was reported. The aims of this study were to express soluble rPLD by different methods in E. coli. The rPLD and natural PLD (dPLD) enzymes were concentrated using an ultramembrane cassette system after the efficiencies of these concentrated enzymes were compared. In this study, the seroprevalence of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, the causative agent of caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) infection, in Kangal Akkaraman sheep flocks was examined. For this purpose, blood samples were collected from 25 different sheep flocks (n = 379). According to the ELISA results, the numbers of CLA-positive and CLA-negative samples were 138 (36.4%) and 241 (63.6%), respectively. CLA positivity was observed in 35.7% of the females (n = 241), 37.7% of the males (n = 138), 40.2% of the sheep with clinical symptoms (n = 184), and 32.8% of the sheep with no clinical symptoms (n = 195) (P > 0.05). …

The purpose of this work was to study MspI polymorphism in the CAST gene in Soviet Merino and Salsk sheep breeds in the South European part of Russia and to find its relation with growth traits. The aim of this study was to compare PCR tests for the detection of Mycoplasma agalactiae in sheep and goats. Samples obtained from sheep and goats in Turkey were tested to determine the presence of M. agalactiae. Mycoplasma culture and two direct PCR methods based on the uvrC gene and polC gene were compared with PCR of the 16S rRNA gene followed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR/DGGE) on DNA extracted from clinical samples (following culture enrichment). DIO2 was studied as a candidate gene for reproduction in sheep. Three pairs of primers were designed to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of exon 2 of DIO2 in nonseasonal and seasonal reproduction breeds. The polymorphisms were detected using SeqMan II and analyzed by PCR-RFLP. The sheep DIO2 gene was cloned and its mutations were detected in five sheep breeds whose reproductive seasonality and litter sizes were different. Association analyses were performed to reveal the relationships between SNPs and reproductive seasonality as well as litter size in sheep. The activity of enzymes that digest carbohydrates at various points in the gastrointestinal tract of sheep was examined. In addition, weight and contents of digestive tract segments were examined. The experiment was performed on six adult ewes fed an 85% hay diet. The morphometric measurements revealed that the alimentary tract constituted 32% of the sheep's body mass and wet rumen contents constituted 70% of wet mass of the total digestive tract content. Ovine Coccidiosis: Prevalence And Associated Risk Factors Inand Around Addis-Zemen, Northwest Ethiopia, Abinet Lakew, Zewdu Seyoum

This cross-sectional study was conducted in and around Addis-Zemen from November 2014 to April 2015 to determine the prevalence of ovine coccidiosis and to identify associated risk factors. Faecal samples were collected directly from the rectum of 384 randomly selected animals. A centrifugal faecal flotation technique using saturated salt solution was used to detect Eimeria oocysts. Out of 384 samples, only 88 were found to contain Eimeria oocysts. Eimeria infection was recorded in all age and sex groups of the study animals. A strong significant association was observed (P < 0.05) between Eimeria infection and the faecal consistency, production system, hygienic status, age, and body condition of the sampled animals.
