The Influence Of Mindful Attention On Value Claiming In Distributive Negotiations: Evidence From Four Laboratory Experiments, Jochen Reb, Jayanth Narayanan

We examined the effect of mindful attention on negotiation outcomes in distributive negotiations across four experiments. In Studies 1 and 2, participants who performed a short mindful attention exercise prior to the negotiation claimed a larger share of the bargaining zone than the control condition participants they negotiated with. Study 3 replicated this finding using a different manipulation of mindful attention. Study 4 again replicated this result and also found that mindful negotiators were more satisfied with both the outcome and the process of the negotiation. We discuss theoretical and practical implications, limitations, and future directions.

A Prospective Examination Of Mindfulness Training On The Mitigation Of Postraumatic Stress Symptoms, Abby E. Blankenship

The current study investigated the ability of a one-session computerized mindfulness intervention to mitigate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like symptoms in response to a trauma analogue. Ninety-two participants were randomly assigned to either mindfulness training or no treatment. Participants assigned to the mindfulness training completed a 1-hour computerized mindfulness training and practiced their skills for 1 week. All participants were exposed to an analogue for real-life trauma and were assessed at 1- and 2-week follow-up. Participants assigned to the mindfulness condition exhibited significantly lower levels of PTSD-like symptoms at 2-week follow-up in comparison to the no treatment condition. Mindfulness meditation is a practice of focus, awareness, and non-judgmental acceptance of one's thoughts (Deyo et al., 2009; Kenny et al., 2007). Rumination is a maladaptive pattern of thought that is common in people with depression and other mood disorders. It can lead to further episodes of depression, and can be very destructive in that way (Nolen-Hoeksema, 2008). This study evaluated the effect of the Mantram Repetition Program (MRP), an internet-delivered stress management course on burnout, stress of conscience, spiritual wellbeing, and mindfulness on a self-selected group of healthcare workers (HCWs). A quasi-experimental repeated measures design was used. Participants enrolled in a six-session MRP delivered over three months and completed baseline, post-course, and three-month post-course assessments. Measurement tools included the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS), the Stress of Conscience Questionnaire (SCQ), the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Spiritual Wellbeing Scale (FACIT-12), and the Mindfulness Awareness Attention Scale (MAAS). Background Recent epidemiological studies have demonstrated an association between perceived psychological stress and ischaemic stroke. A feature of stroke is recurrence; 30-40% within 5 years following first transient ischaemic attack/stroke. Equipping patients with skills and coping strategies to help reduce or manage perceived psychological stress, may represent an important secondary prevention intervention. Mindfulness-based Interventions are structured, group-based self-management programmes with potential to help people with long term conditions cope better with physical, psychological, or emotional distress.
