The Global Health Program at Christiana Care Health System (CCHS) is an innovative, multi-disciplinary educational program seeking to improve the public health knowledge base and skills of interested health professionals through didactic, simulation and clinical experiences. A recent AAMC survey revealed 30% ofU.S.medical students participated in an international elective in 2006 versus 15% in 1997. In a resident survey at CCHS in 2010, 70% of residents responded that it was important to have global health education. This program serves to enhance antiretroviral adherence within a population of patients identified to have barriers to optimal medication compliance, and to enhance interprofessional camaraderie and HIV/AIDS knowledge through participation with a community-based organization (CBO).
“HIV– ABC: Bringing Healthcare Home” was created by UK College of Pharmacy students as a way to form an “Adherence Buddy and Counselor” system between HIV patients and trained student pharmacists. Students are matched with identified non-adherent patients and attend clinic visits to help improve adherence and reduce/manage medication adverse effects. Clinic patients also receive nutritional counseling/modified menus to address nutritional needs from the CBO …

Behavior Management And Psychopharmacology In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, James Coplan Md
Annual Foundations Behavioral Health/La Salle University Autism Spectrum Disorders Conference
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) frequently manifest maladaptive behavior. In this workshop we will describe the underlying neuropsychological deficits in ASD, explain how these deficits give rise to various maladaptive behaviors, and provide a logical framework for responding to such behaviors, including behavioral methods and various medications.
This program is designed to help you…
- Understand fundamental behavioral principles such as positive and negative reinforcement, overcorrection, and token economies
- Understand the concept of cognitive rigidity as a driver of maladaptive behavior in persons with ASD, and identify behavioral and pharmacological methods of benefit
- Understand the role of dysregulation of attention …

Research Day
Background:This study investigates the potential role of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), by exploring changes in gene expression related to antiviral immunity and the autophagic pathway. Autophagy is a process that recycles organelles and proteins to create more energy for the cell. This pathway has been linked to neurodegeneration, as malfunctions in the completion of this process lead to a decline in overall cellular health and function. Interestingly, HSV-1 has been shown to block the completion of autophagy, which would potentially contribute to the cytopathic changes observed …

The Effects Of Dihydrobiopterin And Tetrahydrobiopterin On Hydrogen Peroxide And Nitric Oxide Release During Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy, Brittany L. Deiling, Edward S. Iames, Kerry-Anne Perkins, Qian Chen Phd, Lindon H. Young Phd
Research Day
Extracorporeal shockwave lithrotripsy (ESWL) is an effective, non-invasive clinical therapy utilized to break up stones in the kidney and urinary tract. A lithotripter generates high-energy acoustic pulses and propagates those shock waves through a lens on a region that focuses on the location of the stone, in turn breaking up the stone. The successive pulses generate shearing forces and cavitation bubbles. Cavitation bubbles are the formation and implosion of liquid free zones. The cavitation bubbles implode rapidly to create their own shockwaves that also put pressure on the stone. After treatment, fragmentation of the stone allows the debris to be …
