Oxygen Uptake Efficiency Slope Before And After Weight Reduction Program In Obese Adults, Chueh-Hung Wu, Shu-Ming Yeh, Ke-Vin Chang, Hung-Pin Lee, Ssu-Yuan Chen, Ching Lan, Hung-Chih Tsai, Ya-Ling Huang, Jin-Shin Lai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background and Purpose: Oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) is an index for evaluating cardiorespiratory fitness without performing maximal exercise and correlates well with the individual's peak oxygen uptake (□O(superscript 2peak)). The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical usefulness of OUES for determining the cardiorespiratory fitness of obese adults without cardiovascular diseases by investigating (1) the correlation between OUES and weight (2) the change in the OUES after a weight-reduction program. Methods: Fifty-eight obese subjects (13men and 45women) were enrolled in a 12-week weight-reduction program, including diet, exercise and psychological programs. They underwent maximal cycle ergometer exercise testing, …

Sleep Duration, Sleep Regularity, Body Weight, And Metabolic Homeostasis In School-Aged Children, Karen Spruyt, Dennis L. Molfese, David Gozal

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty and Staff Publications

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to explore the effects of duration and regularity of sleep schedules on BMI and the impact on metabolic regulation in children.

METHODS: Sleep patterns of 308 community-recruited children 4 to 10 years of age were assessed with wrist actigraphs for 1 week in a cross-sectional study, along with BMI assessment. Fasting morning plasma levels of glucose, insulin, lipids, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein also were measured for a subsample.

RESULTS: Children slept 8 hours per night, on average, regardless of their weight categorization. A nonlinear trend between sleep and weight emerged. For obese children, …

Web-Based Interventions For Weight Loss And Weight Maintenance Among Rural Midlife And Older Women: Protocol For A Randomized Controlled Trial., Patricia A. Hageman, Carol H. Pullen, Melody Hertzog, Linda S, Boeckner, Susan Noble Walker Jan 2011

Web-Based Interventions For Weight Loss And Weight Maintenance Among Rural Midlife And Older Women: Protocol For A Randomized Controlled Trial., Patricia A. Hageman, Carol H. Pullen, Melody Hertzog, Linda S, Boeckner, Susan Noble Walker

Journal Articles: Physical Therapy

BACKGROUND: Weight loss is challenging and maintenance of weight loss is problematic among midlife and older rural women. Finding effective interventions using innovative delivery methods that can reach underserved and vulnerable populations of overweight and obese rural women is a public health challenge.

METHODS/DESIGN: This Women Weigh-In for Wellness (The WWW study) randomized-controlled trial is designed to compare the effectiveness of theory-based behavior-change interventions using (1) website only, (2) website with peer-led support, or (3) website with professional email-counseling to facilitate initial weight loss (baseline to 6 months), guided continuing weight loss and maintenance (7-18 months) and self-directed weight maintenance …

Using The Alter-G Treadmill System With An Extremely Obese Female: A Case Study, Shawn Simonson, Jane Shimon, Elaine Long, Brooke Lester Dec 2010

Using The Alter-G Treadmill System With An Extremely Obese Female: A Case Study, Shawn Simonson, Jane Shimon, Elaine Long, Brooke Lester

Elaine M. Long

PURPOSE: The present case study examined the potential use of the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill as treatment modality for extreme obese individuals. The special effect of the treadmill reduces ground reaction forces during walking through the use of lower body positive pressure. METHODS: One extremely obese (BMI 69.2) Caucasian 44 year-old female utilized the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill during a 14 wk walking program to pilot test the protocol. RESULTS: At the conclusion of the study, exercise tolerance time increased 3-fold (initially 20 min increased to 65 min) while caloric expenditure increased 4-fold (initially 91.0 kcal/session increased to 442.7 kcal/session) without an …
