Patient's Outcome Of Bladder Cancer Managed By Radical Cystectomy With Lymphadenectomy At A University Hospital, Muhammad Hammad Ather, Anila Jamshaid, Zaheer Alam, Khurrum M. Siddique, M Nasir Sulaiman

Section of Urology

Objective: To study the impact of tumour staging and nodal metastases in predicting 5- year's survival after radical cystectomy and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy for primary bladder cancer.
Methods: During the period 1995 to 2005, 58 patients underwent radical cystectomy and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy and urinary diversion at a University hospital. Patients were identified using medical indexing coding system (ICD 9CM) using standard key words. The patient records were analyzed and follow up data updated. Disease specific survival, death or recurrence was taken as end point.
Results:
Out of 58 patients, 50 (86%) were males and 8 (14%) females with a …

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are extremely rare lesions of the urinary bladder with only nine cases being reported in world literature of which one was malignant. Generally believed to be of neural origin based on histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural studies; they mostly follow a clinically benign course but are commonly mistaken for malignant tumors since they are solid looking, ulcerated tumors with ill-defined margins.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

We herein report two cases of GCTs, one benign and one malignant, presenting with gross hematuria in a 14- and a 47-year-old female, respectively.

RESULTS:

Histopathology revealed characteristic GCTs with positive …

An ectopically placed parathyroid adenoma in the anterior mediastinum is a rare cause of persistent or recurrent primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and is recognized as an important cause of failed primary neck exploration. We encountered 3 such cases amongst 70 surgically treated patients with PHPT (4.3%) over a 20-year period. In 2 cases, the offending adenoma could be removed at first exploration whereas in the 3rd case, it was successfully removed with mediastinal exploration after 2 failed neck explorations. In established cases of PHPT with equivocal preoperative localization studies or negative neck explorations, an ectopically placed parathyroid adenoma should be considered …

Single Instillation Of Mitomycin C Reduces 1st Year Recurrence Following Transurethral Resection Of Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer, M Hammad Ather, S Aziz, M N. Sulaiman Jan 2007

Single Instillation Of Mitomycin C Reduces 1st Year Recurrence Following Transurethral Resection Of Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer, M Hammad Ather, S Aziz, M N. Sulaiman

Section of Urology

Objective: To study the impact of single instillation of 40 mg Mitomycin C (MMC-40) within first hour of transurethral resection (TUR), on first year recurrence of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.
Methods: In this study of two groups of patients with similar demographics and tumour profile were compared to assess first year tumour recurrence pattern. Group A received MMC-40 within 30 minutes of TUR. Group B patients only had TUR of bladder tumour. Patients' charts were reviewed for demographic profile, preoperative diagnosis and imaging used, cytological work up, tumour profile both during cystoscopy and imaging used, patients records were also reviewed …
