The Effect Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Quality Of Life, Anxiety, And Self-Care In Coronary Artery Disease Patients, Susan Susskind Wilkinson Aug 1994

The Effect Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Quality Of Life, Anxiety, And Self-Care In Coronary Artery Disease Patients, Susan Susskind Wilkinson

Theses & Dissertations

This study was designed to explore the effect of cardiac rehabilitation program participation on anxiety, quality of life, and self-care among coronary artery disease patients.

Major lifestyle changes are required after a person experiences an acute coronary event. Rehabilitation programs for coronary artery disease patients are designed to assist the patient with these lifestyle changes by altering the survivor's self-care patterns and improve long-term physical and psychological outcomes. By coordinating education, counseling, and exercise programs, the nurse can help individuals move toward a maximal physiological, psychological, social and vocational recovery. This study was designed to explore the effect of cardiac …

Periodontal Repair In Dogs : Part I : Evaluation Of The Natural Disease Model ; Part Ii : Eptfe Barrier Membranes Support Wound Stabilization And Enhance Bone Regeneration, James Marc Haney Jun 1994

Periodontal Repair In Dogs : Part I : Evaluation Of The Natural Disease Model ; Part Ii : Eptfe Barrier Membranes Support Wound Stabilization And Enhance Bone Regeneration, James Marc Haney

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Animal models are frequently consulted for histometric analysis of reconstructive periodontal therapy. Statistical analysis of induced lesion defects and surgically created defects from our laboratory suggest defect size homogeneity is critical for the model to discriminate treatment effects. This study characterizes natural disease defects in beagle dogs. Buccal-lingual histologic sections from the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th mandibular premolar teeth (P2, P3, P4) from 6 aged beagle dogs with natural disease defects were evaluated for variation in defect height between pair matched tooth types, and jaw quadrants, as well as estimated confidence intervals for treatment differences between left and right pair …

Identification Of Risk Factors Associated With Pulpal Disease, Shelley R. Aronson Jun 1994

Identification Of Risk Factors Associated With Pulpal Disease, Shelley R. Aronson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A few studies have identified etiologic factors in pulpal disease, but little is known about the odds ratios of factors associated with pulpal disease. Odds ratios are well established measures of the effects of exposure to a particular outcome, and are comparisons of exposure to non-exposure in cases versus controls. The purpose of this study was to compare exposure of individual teeth to hypothesized risk factors in endodontic cases and in controls. This case-control study consisted of a chart review of 301 endodontic cases and 301 controls. Caries, types of restorations, and periodontal disease were the most significant factors. With …

Investigation Of Selenium Status In Hypo-, Hyper- And Euthyroid Children, Ping Sun Apr 1994

Investigation Of Selenium Status In Hypo-, Hyper- And Euthyroid Children, Ping Sun

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Recently, it has been reported that human type I iodothyronine deiodinase, an enzyme important in the conversion of T4 to T3 , is a selenoenzyme. Several studies have reported alterations in plasma selenium level in hypo- and hyperthyroid patients.

Using polarized Zeeman-effect atomic absorption spectroscopy, we measured selenium, zinc, copper and manganese concentrations in the plasma and/or red blood cells in children with or without thyroid disease being seen at the outpatient clinic at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. Children with thyroid disease were subdivided into untreated, treated and nonresponsive groups. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test …

In Vitro And In Vivo Effects Of Chemotherapeutants On The Oyster Parasite, Perkinsus Marinus, Gustavo W. Calvo Jan 1994

In Vitro And In Vivo Effects Of Chemotherapeutants On The Oyster Parasite, Perkinsus Marinus, Gustavo W. Calvo

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

To investigate the potential of chemotherapeutants to control the oyster pathogen Perkinsus marinus, anticoccidial and antifungal compounds were tested in vitro on infected hemolymph and cultured P. marinus cells and in vivo on infected oysters. In addition, acute toxicity to oysters was determined for six anticoccidials. In vitro experiments with infected hemolymph consisted of 24 h exposure of 0.2 mL hemolymph aliquots to concentrations ranging from 100 mg/L to 0.01 mg/L of amphotericin-B, amprolium, arprinocid, cycloheximide, lasalocid, malachite green, monensin, sulfadimethoxine, and a potentiated sulfadimethoxine, followed by incubation in fluid thioglycollate medium (FTM) to determine prezoosporangia abundance. Lasalocid, malachite green, …

Human Immunodeficiency Virus And Acquired Immune Deficiency : Beliefs, Knowledge, And Behaviors Of High-School Students Attending Seventh-Day Adventist Academies, Deborah L. Gray

Dissertations

Problem. Few attempts have been conducted to assess knowledge of HIV/AIDS in the adolescent population attending Seventh-day Adventist secondary schools. This present study was to investigate the HIV/AIDS-related beliefs, HIV/AIDS-related knowledge, and HIV/AIDS-related behaviors of adolescents according to gender, grade level, ethnicity, geographical location, and religious affiliation.

Method. The subjects for this study were 1,292 9th- through 12th-grade students attending selected non-boarding Seventh-day Adventist academies representing three geographical regions of the United States and the Virgin Islands. The survey instrument utilized was the "AIDS Survey for Students" obtained from the U.S. Center for Disease Control. Chi-square analysis was used to …

Intact Families With A Multiple Sclerotic Parent: Social And Emotional Adjustment Of Parents And School-Age Children, Jean A. Mccutchan Jan 1994

Intact Families With A Multiple Sclerotic Parent: Social And Emotional Adjustment Of Parents And School-Age Children, Jean A. Mccutchan

Dissertations

Problem Statement. Research on children with a multiple sclerotic parent has been minimal and until recently focused only on negative aspects. This study investigated how families successfully cope with multiple sclerosis (MS) and how their school-age children are affected, positively or negatively.

Methodology. This research used the case study approach with intact Caucasian families, 10 where the mother was the patient and 3 families where the father was the patient. The 20 children were ages 5 through 19. Following a clinical interview, the family members responded to the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales-II, the Family Hardiness Index and the …

Issues That Concern Prison Officers About Hiv Positive Prisoners In Western Australia, David Francis Cain

Theses : Honours

In 1988 the Department of Corrective Services established an AIDS Standing Committee to draw up an HIV positive/AIDS policy. The Committee consists of ten members, two of whom are union members who represent the issues that concern 1,227 prison officers statewide. The Policy which was issued in 1989 medically isolated HIV positive prisoners from the mainstream prison population. The aim of this research is to identify and quantify the issues that concern prison officers about HIV positive prisoners in Western Australia.
