The goal of the dissertation is to undertake an analysis of substance use disorders that focuses on a public health ethics perspective. The ethical argument focuses upon justifying the use of harm reduction and is primarily concerned with the current opioid crisis. While substance abuse/misuse over the course of history has been identified as a public health concern, this dissertation presents substance use disorders over the course of the lifespan, examining various contexts in which it can affect daily living and health outcomes. The incidence of pertussis, a vaccine-preventable disease that can have severe complications in infants, has been increasing in the United States over the past three decades. Vaccine hesitancy and refusal have also increased and are associated with vaccination exemptions, which in turn are associated with outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, including pertussis. Understanding attitudes towards vaccinations and identifying geographic disparities of vaccination exemptions and pertussis risks is useful for guiding control programs. The overall purpose of this cross-sectional, survey-based study was to examine university students’ social media use, perceptions of in-person and online social connectedness, and feelings about physical distancing during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario, Canada. University students’ (N = 1,588; M_age = 22.4, SD = 5.1; 80.6% female) survey responses revealed high levels of in-person (M_item = 4.4, SD = 0.8) and online (M_item = 3.8, SD = 0.7) connectedness. Through a positivistic and phenomenological approach, the study examines social determinants of COVID-19 related sickness and suffering in the Bronx, New York City, New York, ZIP codes 10462, 10472, 10467, 10458, 10474, and 10464. I utilize a violence paradigm (structural and everyday violence) to describe the social determinants of risk and sickness-related suffering and deploy an assemblage framework to shed light on how these determinants create negative synergies that undermine wellbeing and render certain communities vulnerable to extreme suffering. Despite clinical implementation of ES, insurance companies (payers) continue to deny this test. We investigated if the payer barrier is influenced by payer type, and if other demographic or clinical information correlated to ES approval and obtainment. a) To determine if pregnancy intention predicts postpartum contraception use among women with live births in Vermont.

b) To encourage the ongoing education of sexually active individuals in best practices to reduce unintended pregnancy.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted using data from the 2016-2018 Vermont Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (n=3753 women with a live birth), using frequency tables, crosstabulations, and simple logistic regression.

The Kentucky rabies reporting system includes data from five laboratories and provides an account of suspected rabies reports since 1989. Over 35,000 suspected cases are used to estimate rabies incidence temporally and spatially. Recommendations to the current rabies reporting methodologies are presented through proposed innovations of a standard, electronic reporting form. Given the multiple sources of data, the reporting system lacks standardization and comprehensive information about suspected rabies events, resulting in limited epidemiological capabilities; and data issues that prevent its use as a surveillance system. Methods: This retrospective cohort study used data from the South Dakota Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (SD PRAMS) survey, which is an ongoing statebased surveillance system of maternal behaviors, attitudes, and experiences before, during, and shortly after pregnancy.
