The purpose of the present thesis is to provide a theoretical framework to deepen understanding of the dynamics which lead to wife battering behavior and to illuminate its original causes and the process maintaining it.

Learning principles explicated by three learning based theories are utilized as premises to explain the process the batterer engages in which produces his violent behavior. Some existing sociological theories of wife abuse and family violence serve as bases for some of the antecedent variables postulated in the model presented. Other cognitive-perceptual and emotional intervening variables are postulated to explain the process of wife battering behavior. …

A computer model of the left ventricular (LV) epicardial surface was developed from Jang’s truncated ellipsoidal model, which has a minor to major axis ratio of 6:10. The model was applied in calculating the area of a segment of the myocardium, jeopardized by an impending occlusion of its associated artery. The endangered segment of the LV muscle was also visualized in different projections by rotations in three space and graphical displays simulating the three dimensions.

The present study was designed to examine the effects of gradual DPH withdrawal on the matching to sample performance of three mentally retarded persons. The percentage of correct responses per session served as the dependent variable and the sample and comparison stimuli were red, green, and blue illumination of translucent response windows. The results showed that doses of diphenylhydantoin considerably lower than the suggested optimim therapeutic level can impair the performance of mentally retarded individuals on a simple discrimination task. Training and self-control conditions within each session were incorporated in a multiple Baseline design with replications across subjects. The generality of relaxation skills acquired through relaxation training to a self-control condition where the subjects relaxed without assistance was assessed. EMG biofeedback was initially employed as a training technique; however, it was not effective in assisting the subjects to relax. A training procedure using verbal instructions was then introduced to replace the biofeedback. The acquisition of an acceptable percentage of normative output in a rehabilitation setting is a common problem in vocational rehabilitation. Consistently effective techniques do not exist for the teaching of clients to work at what would be considered a high percentage of normative output. The present effort studied selected components of modeling to attempt to provide a cost-efficient, effective method for rate acceleration. The percent of normative output was' the dependent variable. This study sought to determine the basic intelligibility of synthesized speech as produced by the HC 120 Phonic Mirror Handivoice. It involved 48 male and female subjects divided into two groups. Group 1 had 40 subjects ranging in age from 18 to 44 years. Group 2 had eight subjects ranging in age from 18 to 33 years. All subjects were screened for normal hearing. A two group time series design was used to determine if exposure of adolescent clients to dental plaque charts during oral health instruction sessions is effective in motivating them to improve oral health over a six month period. Fifty-six adolescents who previously had received treatment at Old Dominion University Dental Hygiene Clinic consented to participate and were randomly assigned to a control or experimental group. Objectives of this research were to (1) synthesize, and (2) evaluate new compounds which would be potential reactivators of organophosphate-inhibited acetylcholinesterase.

A series of 1,8-diazafluorenone and 2,2'bipyridylketone oximes and oxime methiodides were synthesized (11, 13, 14, 22, 24). These compounds were developed as structural analogs of 2-PAM (2-Pyridinealdoxime methiodide) and TMB-4 (1,1Trimethylene-Bis(4-formylpyridinium bromide)dioxime), the current drugs of choice for treatment of organophosphorous poisoning.

Fifty subjects were selected and randomly assigned to two groups. Over a 75-day period, Group A used disclosing tablets on a daily basis to reveal dental plaque deposits to control dental disease; Group Bused signs of gingival bleeding on a daily basis to control dental disease. The purpose of this study was to determine if a statistically significant difference existed in self concept prior to and following preventive oral health services in clients undergoing drug rehabilitation. Individuals residing at the Drug Dependency Treatment Program Unit at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, comprised the control and experimental groups.

Data were organized according to a randomized groups, pretest-posttest design with preventive oral health services as the active independent variable. The dependent variables, Total Positive Score, Self Satisfaction Score, and Physical Self Score were measured by the Tennessee Self Concept Scale.

The general morphology of the optic lobes of several decapods were initially described by Parker (1897) and Hanstrom (1924). These studies explore the distribution of blood flow among small samples of placental tissue. Labeled microspheres (14 ± 1 pm) were Injected Into the left ventricle of six un-anesthetized ewes and Into the jugular vein of the fetus In utero. A total of 3,576 samples weighing 31. +11. (S.D.) mg were taken from seventeen cotyledons and counted for flow labels. Maternal and fetal flow within the cotyledons were both normally distributed with standard deviations of 44%. Sleep is necessary for physical and psychological restoration of the body. Studies indicate that tissue repair is augmented during sleep, showing that rates of protein synthesis and of mitotic division are higher at times of rest and sleep. Studies evaluating sleep-deprived subjects reveal that after loss of normal sleep, some types of memory and learning processes are impaired. These subjects generally become anxious and irritable, especially after loss of dreaming sleep.

The relative merits of laminagraphic and panographic radiographic images of the temporomandibular joint area have been compared.

Serial temporomandibular joint area radiographs were taken with a panographic unit. A dried human skull was used as the study subject. Wire grids were placed over the temporomandibular joint areas. The linear and angular distortion of the wire grids was measured with the plane of occlusion being serially tipped horizontally from minus fifteen degrees to plus fifteen degrees.

Olfactory bulb efferents sweep caudally over the prepyriform cortex in a broad fiber sheet called the lateral olfactory tract (LOT). The LOT begins as a compact sheet of fibers in the olfactory peduncle and narrows to a bundle caudally. It is the primary axonal pathway between the olfactory bulb and the cortex. The shape and cross-sectional area of the LOT was measured from histologic sections. The cross-sectional area diminishes to about half from rostral to caudal measurements. Consecutive medical records of 10,622 births were viewed, January, 1962, through December, 1972, from McAllen General Hospital, McAllen, Texas. The overall incidence of birth defects was consistent with rates for the United States. Birth defects detected in Spanish surnamed were significantly higher than for non-Spanish surnamed. Spanish surnamed bore eight times more defects of the central nervous system than non Spanish surnamed. Males had significantly more defects than females, and had almost seven times more defects of the urogenital system. The most distinctive feature of this survey was the high incidence of atelectasis. The present study was conducted as a service to ~e Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, to determine if the family counseling service administered by the Diversion Department, could significantly reduce the recidivism rate among juvenile status offenders (JSOs). A retrospective design was employed in order to examine the records of 74 JSOs, who came in contact with the Intake Department of the Norfolk Juvenile Court in 1978. The recidivism rate was recorded, and data analyzed from a two year intervention period. The present study attempted to assess the impact of a health education program focused on those preventive measures or avoidance behaviors an individual could incorporate. into daily living to reduce the incidence of urinary tract . infections. An experimental group, consisting of seventeen volunteers was exposed to a health. education program, and then compared to a seventeen member control group. A statistically significant reduction in the incidence of cystitis, occurred within the experimental group after health education intervention. The results were not statistically significant when the experimental post-test was compared with the control post-test.

Questions concerning the advantages of breast-feeding have been debated since the introduction of commercially-prepared formula about 50 years ago. Some recognized benefits of breast milk include less respiratory as well as other Infections, less allergy in infancy and later life, and a lower morbidity rate in less-developed countries.
