A Longitudinal Assessment Of Change In Blood Pressure Among Participants In The Heart Smarts Program, Kathryn Haskins, Susana Suzrez, Rickie Brawer, Phd, Mph, Sandra Sherman, Edd, Michelle Abel, Msph, James Plumb, Md, Mph

Phase 1

Many low-income areas of the United States are considered food deserts because people living in those communities have limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables (FFV); lack of FFV is tied to numerous health issues, including cardiovascular disease and obesity. The Heart Smarts Program (HSP) provides increased access to FFV in food deserts, as well as providing participants with nutrition education courses and health screenings, including blood pressure. The purpose of this study is to examine HSP participants who have been with the program for differing lengths of time in order to determine if length of participation has an impact …

Growing evidence links household air pollution exposure from biomass cookstoves with elevated blood pressure. We assessed cross‐sectional associations of 24‐hour mean concentrations of personal and kitchen fine particulate matter (PM2.5), black carbon (BC), and stove type with blood pressure, adjusting for confounders, among 147 women using traditional or cleaner‐burning Justa stoves in Honduras. We investigated effect modification by age and body mass index. Traditional stove users had mean (standard deviation) personal and kitchen 24‐hour PM2.5 concentrations of 126 μg/m3 (77) and 360 μg/m3 (374), while Justa stove users’ exposures were 66 μg/m3 (38) and 137 μg/m3(194), respectively. BC concentrations were …

Polymorphisms Within Ryr3 Gene Are Associated With Risk And Age At Onset Of Hypertension, Diabetes, And Alzheimer's Disease, Shaoqing Gong, Brenda Bin Su, Hugo Tovar, Chunxiang Mao, Valeria Gonzalez, Ying Liu, Yongke Lu, Ke-Sheng Wang, Chun Xu

Pharmacology, Physiology and Toxicology

Background: Hypertension affects 33% of Americans while type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease (AD) affect 10% of Americans, respectively. Ryanodine receptor 3 gene (RYR3) codes for the RYR which functions to release stored endoplasmic reticulum calcium ions (Ca2+) to increase intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Increasing studies demonstrate that altered levels of intracellular Ca2+ affect cardiac contraction, insulin secretion, and neurodegeneration. In this study, we investigated associations of the RYR3 genetic variants with hypertension, AD, and diabetes.

Methods: Family data sets were used to explore association of RYR3 polymorphisms with risk and age at onset (AAO) of hypertension, diabetes, and AD.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders are the second highest direct obstetric cause of maternal death after haemorrhage, accounting for 14% of maternal deaths globally. Pregnancy hypertension contributes to maternal deaths, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, due to a scarcity of doctors providing evidence-based emergency obstetric care. Task-sharing some obstetric responsibilities may help to reduce the mortality rates. This study was conducted to assess acceptability by the community and other healthcare providers, for task-sharing by community health workers (CHW) in the identification and initial care in hypertensive disorders in pregnancy.

METHODS: This study was conducted in two districts of Karnataka state in …

The sensory innervation of the lung is well known to be innervated by nerve fibers of both vagal and sympathetic origin. Although the vagal afferent innervation of the lung has been well characterized, less is known about physiological effects mediated by spinal sympathetic afferent fibers. We hypothesized that activation of sympathetic spinal afferent nerve fibers of the lung would result in an excitatory pressor reflex, similar to that previously characterized in the heart. In this study, we evaluated changes in renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and hemodynamics in response to activation of TRPV1-sensitive pulmonary spinal sensory fibers by agonist application …

It has been demonstrated in numerous human and animal studies that audiogenic stress (AS) can induce elevation of arterial blood pressure and cardiac damage and that noise –induced hearing loss may be associated with alterations in magnesium (Mg) metabolism. Our laboratories, over a period of approximately 40 years, have been investigating why AS causes high blood pressure and cardiac damage. This review focuses on a number of newer discoveries on why AS causes dysfunctions of the cardiovascular system (CVS) This review discusses the pivotal physiological and biochemical importance of Mg to body health and the fact that most Americans and …
