Patients with anemia and other conditions resulting in loss of blood often come with orders to return wasted blood to them. While using typical blood draw practices, patients are placed at an increased risk of infection when their blood is exposed to the outside world. My question is, will using a closed system decrease the instances of infection in patients who receive their waste blood after draws? By utilizing a waste syringe attached to the IV line, nurses can avoid detaching and reattaching syringes to collect and give back the patient's blood. Since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, Great Lakes drownings have increased. The Great Lakes are a unique and understudied environment due to being cold, fresh water, and resuscitation protocols and guidelines being derived from warm, primarily salt water environments. We analyzed open sources materials to find records of Great Lakes drownings from 2021-2023 and analyze the data looking for trends in cold and warm water drownings.

We found 80.0-85.0% of the included drowning victims were male and had an average age of 38.0-39.0 years old. 40.0%-57.7% of Great Lakes drowning deaths were in cold water; of those, Lake Michigan had …

This systematic review investigates the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on outcomes in shoulder arthroplasty (SA). SA, a common orthopedic procedure, has seen an increasing focus on SDOH influencing postoperative results. The study aims to comprehensively assess this impact on both surgical and patient-reported outcomes.

Through a systematic search of databases, 34 studies (2011-2021) met the inclusion criteria, involving 4,825,547 patients. Explored SDOH included insurance status, race/ethnicity, age, sex, income, social support, and veteran status. Outcomes considered were length of stay, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores, total SA rates, revision rates, complication rates, and discharge status.

Background: Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive and malignant brain tumor known for its rapid progression and unfavorable prognosis. The standard treatment options primarily involve radiation and temozolomide, however recurrence is inevitable.

B7H3/CD276, an immunomodulatory transmembrane glycoprotein, demonstrates tumor-specific expression, with limited presence in normal healthy tissue, making it a promising and attractive treatment target in GBM. AbbV155 is an antibody drug conjugate that inhibits BCL-XL and specifically targets B7H3 (CD276) on GBM cells with the goal of selectively eliminating viable tumor cells.

Neuraxial labor analgesia for vaginal delivery or cesarean section is performed in more than 71% of women in the United States. Postdural puncture headache(PDPH) is a relatively common complication of neuraxial anesthesia. Epidural blood patch (EBP) is considered the gold standard treatment, and although EBP is a highly effective intervention, it is not without risk. There is growing evidence that less invasive alternative treatments, such as combined use of atropine and neostigmine have effectively relieved PDPH where traditional, conservative methods have failed. Advantages of percutaneous techniques including microwave ablation (MWA) over surgical approach such as partial nephrectomy (PN), including cost effectiveness, minimally invasive, better renal preservation rates, lower procedure-related morbidity, and reduced hospitalization time make the case compelling. Purpose: Examine pregnancy-related, demographic, psychosocial and healthcare utilization factors among childbearing-aged individuals who were pregnant, postpartum or who experienced pregnancy loss

Methods: Data from nine health care systems in the Mental Health Research Network was included in this sample. A case-control study design was used in which 290 childbearing-age individuals who died by suicide (cases) from 2000-2015 were matched with 10 childbearing-age individuals from the same healthcare system and enrolled during the same time period who did not die by suicide (n=2,900). Conditional logistic regression was used to analyze associations between pregnancy/postpartum/pregnancy loss status and suicide.

METHODS: We did a retrospective review of medical records and polysomnographic (PSG) data of patients with dream enactment behavior (DEB) from 2015 to 2020. REM sleep without atonia (RSWA) was scored according to the AASM rules, and %RSWA was calculated.

RESULTS: Thirty-six patients with DEB were analyzed. Recursive partitioning algorithm was used to determine the %RSWA that correlated with the presence or absence of Parkinson’s disease (PD). RSWA >=20% was present in 11 patients, and had the highest correlation with PD (9/11). RSWA of 2.1% to 19.9% was present in 10 patients, and had modest correlation with PD (3/10). RSWA= …

Hypothesis and Objective: Genes participating in the notch signaling pathway are influenced by exposure to high nitrous oxide (HNO) levels. Notch signaling pathway genes are responsible for regulating cell fate, differentiation, and apoptosis. Dysregulation of these genes can contribute to tumorigenesis. Alterations in the expression of these genes in MCF7 breast cancer cells could help determine the effects of the notch signaling pathway on tumorigenesis as a result of exposure to nitrous oxide.

Methods: Samples of cDNA from MCF7 and MCF7-HNO cells were used in DNA microarray analysis. Qualifying genes of interest provided a p value < .05. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were defined and categorized using the Gene Oncology Uniprot (GO) Molecular Function database. These cells were further analyzed using a proprietary bioinformatics analysis created by our laboratory.

Introduction- Injectable glucagon inhibits gastrointestinal (GI) and duodenal motility by relaxing smooth muscles, decreasing the frequency and amplitude of phasic activity of the sphincter of Oddi. This enables endoscopists to enhance biliary cannulation and extract small bile duct stone. Additionally, glucagon can potentially worsen underlying hyperglycemia and hyperkalemia especially in patients with diabetes. The BI/NAP1/027 ribotype was discovered in 2005 and has since been responsible for multiple outbreaks in the US and Canada. This subtype of C. Difficile is known to be more virulent in vivo and produce more severe disease. Limited regional data of the prevalence of this ribotype is available, which could help guide treatment. Introduction
Many Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency programs utilize “home call” systems for nighttime coverage of inpatient services. In this system, trainees are expected to work at full capacity the following day after taking nocturnal call. While “on call,” trainees receive both urgent and non-urgent pages throughout the night, which disrupt sleep. To mitigate fatigue, improve hand-offs and improve timing of patient care, this study targeted reducing non-urgent overnight pages from nurses to home call PM&R residents between 11pm to 6am.

Radon cannot be detected through one's sense of sight, smell, hearing, taste or touch. The only way to detect it is by testing certain spaces or environments with specialized instruments. This radioactive gas is present in trace quantities in the earth and produced by decaying uranium.
