What Can Be Achieved With An Interprofessional Class?, Kitsum Li, Olivia Catolico

Introduction Recently, educators advocated for interprofessional education to better prepare entry-level healthcare workers for efficient, effective, and respectful teamwork to lower the cost of healthcare and improve the delivery of collaborative quality patient care. This article describes the results of an educational program evaluation of an interprofessional class (IPC) taught over a five-year period between nursing and occupational therapy (OT) departments at a small private university.
Methods During the IPC sessions, a small group of nursing and OT students observed a simulated patient care scenario in which a nursing and an OT student provided care related to their respective discipline. …

Objective: This study examined the effect of a 10-week intensive medical-surgical course on ability to perform 16 common, acute care skills among Philippine educated nursing students seeking licensure in California. The aims of the study were to (1) determine competency in performing skills at the start of the medical-surgical course and (2) evaluate the effectiveness of the medical-surgical course in improving skill competency. Methods: Twenty-three Philippine educated nursing students participated in a 4-hour skills competency test procedure that involved 4 patient care stations and 16 common acute care skills. During the last week of the 10-week medical-surgical course that included …

Researchers at a mid-sized, Midwest, faith-based university used a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pretest posttest design to gather data from newly enrolled nursing students in a baccalaureate, masters and doctorate in nursing practice program. Literature regarding confidence levels, self-efficacy and information literacy skills was reviewed. Specific tools to assess confidence and self-efficacy of information literacy skills were explored. The 28-item Information Literacy Self-Efficacy Scale (ILSES) developed in 2006 by Serap Kurbanoglu was used in fall 2012, spring 2013 and fall 2013 to gather data from over 200 newly enrolled nursing students. Analysis of self-reported information literacy skills and self-efficacy levels …

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne Zentz, Kimberly Whalen

Background
An expectation of baccalaureate nursing education is to prepare nurses to implement evidenced-based practice (EBP). This expectation extends far beyond a basic understanding of the research process. BSN prepared nurses must be able to effectively and efficiently identify, analyze, and synthesize evidence (AACN, 2008). The acquisition of information literacy skills is foundational to the development of EBP.
Implementation
The study took place at a College of Nursing within a mid-sized, faith-based university located in the Midwest. Historically, students enrolled in their senior level undergraduate nursing research/EBP course underwent one library instruction session with the nursing librarian to reinforce search …

Baccalaureate nursing educators must prepare nurses to implement evidence-based practice (EBP). BSN nurses must be able to effectively identify, analyze, and synthesize evidence (AACN, 2008). In a nursing research course, students conducted group projects which required searching for the best evidence. Project evaluations revealed that students were not searching systematically. To facilitate EBP and information literacy skill development, a collaboration between the College of Nursing and Library Services emerged. Targeted Learning Outcomes 1. Formulate a strategic search using databases and Internet resources 2. Evaluate and select the ‘best available’ evidence 3. Document systematic search (keywords, subject headings, limiters, and results) …

The authors present findings of 2nd year nursing students’ (N = 352) perceptions of their clinical teachers’ use of empowering teaching behaviours (ETB) and to highlight steps undertaken to establish psychometric properties of the Empowering Teaching Behaviours Questionnaire – Student (ETBQ-S). The authors identify a) the process involved in the adoption of the ETBQ-S, b) ETBQ-S validity procedures completed prior to instrument implementation, c) results of nursing students’ responses to the ETBQ-S, d) criterion validity, and e) ETBQ-S confirmatory factor analysis findings conducted after study completion. The ETBQ-S reliably measures five facets of empowering actions that clinical teachers can employ …

Appraise the value of an educationally based clinical enrichment experience for students approaching graduation. Utilize insights gained and lessons learned through the ongoing evolution of a program-based clinical enrichment course.
Nursing Students In A Developing Nation Using The Internet: A Phenomenological Study, Karen Breitkreuz
Nursing Students In A Developing Nation Using The Internet: A Phenomenological Study, Karen Breitkreuz
Karen R. Breitkreuz
Using a qualitative phenomenologial method, this study’s semistructured interviews illuminate the lived experience of nursing students from a developing nation, Malawi, Africa, in using the Internet as an educational resource. Analysis proceeded according to van Manen’s qualitative phenomenological method.
Five essential themes emerged from the students’ stories of their experiences: maintaining interpersonal connections with family and friends, using the Internet to find information, adapting information to fit their culture, using the information they find from developed nations as a comparative standard for care, and facing the challenges of learning to use technology.
Ultimately, the Internet provides these undergraduate nursing students …

Mentoring: A Nurse Educator Survey, Connie Hubbard, Kathleen Halcomb, Brenda Foley, Bridget Roberts
Bridget R. Roberts
Mentoring promotes success throughout the careers of nurse educators. This pilot study discusses findings from a survey administered at the 18th Annual Nurse Educator Conference in the Rockies. Facilitators of and barriers to mentoring were identified by participants and clustered into themes by researchers. The findings are useful to associate degree nursing programs because issues surrounding the nurse educator shortage are addressed. Strategies to develop effective mentoring programs to assist in recruiting and retaining qualified nurse educators are discussed.
