Proposed Typologies For The Dress Needs Of Nursing Mothers And Babies And Available Nursing Dress: An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Concepts In These Typologies, Ellen Mckinney, Armine Ghalachyan

In the U.S., the majority of babies are weaned from the breast by the time they are three months old (CDC, 2007) in contrast to the recommendation of “exclusive breastfeeding for about 6 months. . ., with continuation of breastfeeding for 1 year or longer” (Eidelman & Schanler, 2012). Women who feel comfortable feeding in public breastfeed longer than women who are not comfortable (Allen & Pelto, 1985). Practical advice on carrying out life roles while breastfeeding is important and requires consideration of clothing (Mulford 2008). The purposes of this study were to (1) identify and organize (a) dress needs …

Comparative Effects Of 2 Aqua Exercise Programs On Physical Function, Balance, And Perceived Quality Of Life In Older Adults With Osteoarthritis, Alison Fisken, Deborah Waters, Wayne Hing, Michael Steele, Justin Keogh
Wayne Hing
Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease, which affects a large number of older adults. Many older adults with OA are physically inactive, which can contribute to reduced functional capability, quality of life, and an increased risk of falls. Although hydrotherapy is often recommended for older adults with OA, less is known about aqua fitness (AF), a widely available form of aqua-based exercise. Purpose: To compare the effect of an AF program and a seated aqua-based exercise program on a range of functional measures and quality of life among older adults with OA. Methods: Thirty-five older adults with OA …
The Reliability And Validity Of Physiotherapist Visual Rating Of Dynamic Pelvis And Knee Alignment In Young Athletes, C. Whatman, Patricia Hume, Wayne Hing
The Reliability And Validity Of Physiotherapist Visual Rating Of Dynamic Pelvis And Knee Alignment In Young Athletes, C. Whatman, Patricia Hume, Wayne Hing
Wayne Hing
Purpose: To investigate visual rating of pelvis and knee position in young athletes during lower extremity functional tests. Methods: Pelvis and knee alignment, in 23 athletes, was visually rated by 66 physiotherapists. Peak two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) kinematics were also quantified. Ratings were compared to consensus visual ratings of an expert panel. The consensus ratings were also compared to peak kinematics. Reliability was determined using percentage agreement (PA) and the first order agreement coefficient (AC1). Sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) and differences in kinematics between groups based on the expert visual ratings were calculated to assess rating validity. …
Defining The Functional Properties Of Dietary Protein And Protein-Rich Foods In Human Energy Expenditure, Sze Yen Tan, Linda Tapsell, Marijka Batterham, Karen Charlton
Defining The Functional Properties Of Dietary Protein And Protein-Rich Foods In Human Energy Expenditure, Sze Yen Tan, Linda Tapsell, Marijka Batterham, Karen Charlton
Karen E. Charlton
Food has a number of functional properties that can support the balance between energy intake and energy expenditure and, theoretically, one of these is the thermic effect of food. Including high-protein foods in meals may be advantageous in contributing to energy expenditure but, in practice, the evidence needs to relate to specific foods and normal dietary conditions. Using the human whole room calorimeter facility, we conducted three studies to examine the effects of: (i) higher and lower levels of protein on energy expenditure; (ii) high-protein meals using different foods to deliver the protein; and (iii) omnivorous and vegetarian cuisines in …
Consumers' Salient Beliefs Regarding Dairy Products In The Functional Food Era: A Qualitative Study Using Concepts From The Theory Of Planned Behaviour, Deborah Nolan, Elizabeth Neale, Yasmine Probst, Karen E. Charlton, Linda C. Tapsell
Consumers' Salient Beliefs Regarding Dairy Products In The Functional Food Era: A Qualitative Study Using Concepts From The Theory Of Planned Behaviour, Deborah Nolan, Elizabeth Neale, Yasmine Probst, Karen E. Charlton, Linda C. Tapsell

Background Inadequate consumption of dairy products without appropriate dietary substitution may have deleterious health consequences. Social research reveals the factors that may impede compliance with dietary recommendations. This is particularly important given the recent introduction of functional dairy products. One of the challenges for public health professionals is to demonstrate the efficacy of nutrition education in improving attitudes toward nutrient rich foods. The aim of this study was to explore the salient beliefs of adult weight loss trial participants regarding both traditional and functional dairy products and to compare these with a control group not exposed to nutrition education Methods …
Characterisation Of A Functional Ingredient Requires Multiple Assessments, Eleanor Beck, Susan Tosh, Marijka Batterham, Xu-Feng Huang, Linda Tapsell
Characterisation Of A Functional Ingredient Requires Multiple Assessments, Eleanor Beck, Susan Tosh, Marijka Batterham, Xu-Feng Huang, Linda Tapsell

The food industry relies on high market share, market exclusivity, or first to market advantage for functional ingredients. Researchers test individual ingredients (added to traditional and non-traditional delivery foods), often at high doses, to confirm health benefits. Unfortunately, testing the activity of an ingredient alone does not necessarily define how it functions in foods, and a single test, such as that of glycaemic index, does not address all food functionalities. In addition, food functionality may be affected by a variety of factors including storage, methods of preparation, endogenous enzymes in other food ingredients and concentration. We found in a recent …
