Uptake, Storage And Secretion Of 5-Hydroxytryptamine And Its Amino Acid Precursor By Dispersed Rat Pancreas Acinar Cells, Ligia Stern, A. Tenenhouse, E. Yu

Edward Yu

Rat pancreas acinar cells contain 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT; 10.86 +/- 2.52 ng/i.u. amylase), all of which can be accounted for by the 5-HT recovered from the zymogen granule fraction of these cells (10.70 +/- 3.06 ng/i.u. amylase). When incubated with [14C]5-HT dispersed acinar cells take up the amine and concentrate it in zymogen granules. These cells will also take up [14C]5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), decarboxylate it and store the [14C]5-HT so produced in zymogen granules. 5-HTP itself is not taken up by the granules. 5-HT is incorporated into zymogen granules early in their formation; no amine is accumulated by mature zymogen granules and …

How Family Physicians Approach Ethical Problems, Ronald Christie, Barry Hoffmaster, Martin Bass, Eric Mccracken May 1983

How Family Physicians Approach Ethical Problems, Ronald Christie, Barry Hoffmaster, Martin Bass, Eric Mccracken

C. Barry Hoffmaster

The defining features of family medicine as described in the literature have important ethical implications. In an attempt to study the day-to-day practice of family physicians regarding these ethical issues, a 28-item questionnaire was sent to 95 part-time and 17 full-time family physician teachers associated with the University of Western Ontario's Department of Family Medicine. Of the 112 questionnaires mailed out, 97 were returned for a response rate of 86.6 percent. There was a significant spread of answers, suggesting there is no uniform opinion in the sample population. The findings suggest that there are important differences between the description of …

The Development Of A Naturalistic Self-Management Inventory, Sandra Thomas, D. Olsen, R.L. Williams Jan 1983

The Development Of A Naturalistic Self-Management Inventory, Sandra Thomas, D. Olsen, R.L. Williams

Sandra Thomas

The most common approach to self-management research has been to apply it to a specific target behavior, without attending to the generalizability of changes to other facets of one's life. A procedure for measuring self-management effectiveness under real world conditions was developed which emphasized the successful application of self-change procedures. The Self-Description Form (SDF) was field-tested on a sample of four groups of college students (N=214). Results indicated that normative self-management scores increased as level of education increased. Females had higher self-management scores than males except on the leisure scale. The reliability of the self-description scale was confirmed although validity …
