An Exploratory Study Of 4th, 5th, And 6th Grade Summer Camp Participants’ Attitudes And Intentions Towards Physical Activity, Melissa Cater, Anne Kean, Diane Sasser

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Physical inactivity is a growing problem among children, particularly schoolaged youth. Research suggests children are especially prone to inactivity in the summer months when access to structured school-time and extra-curricular activities is reduced. Community programs like residential summer camps offer an excellent environment for engaging children in enjoyable physical activities while also helping them learn to be more physically active when they return home. Pre-existing attitudes often influence how much change a program inspires in an individual. The purpose of this study was to explore 4th, 5th, and 6th grade summer camp participants’ attitudes towards physical activity. Results of this …

Severe Early Childhood Caries (S-ECC) is a terribly aggressive and devastating disease that is all too common in lower socio-economic children, but none more so that what is encountered in American Indian Tribes. Nationwide, approximately 27% of 2-5 year olds have decay while 62% percent of American Indian/Alaska Native children in the same age group have a history of decay (IHS 2010, NHANES 1999-2002). We have conducted a study of children from birth to 36 months of age on Pine Reservation to gain a better understanding of the variables that come into play in the development of this disease, from …

Promoting Children's Adherence To Asthma Self-Management, Demetrius Abshire

Kaleidoscope

Asthma is the most common chronic childhood condition, affecting about nine million children in the United States. Despite effective treatments available to children and their families, adherence to asthma self-management is low. This paper identifies barriers to asthma-self-management and discusses effective education and behavioral strategies to promote self-management in children with asthma. Implications specific to the profession of nursing are incorporated throughout the discussion. In addition to practical nursing interventions in clinic and hospital settings, areas of future nursing research are addressed.

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of intramedullary fixation of displaced humeral shaft fractures in skeletally immature children using a single elastic stable intramedullary nail. Background Almost all pediatric humeral shaft fractures can be treated successfully using closed methods. Some patients, however, require internal fixation either because of an inability to maintain an adequate reduction, significant soft tissue injury, or concomitant fractures. In this study, the functional and radiological results of the management of humeral shaft fractures in children using a single retrograde elastic intramedullary nail will be evaluated. Patients and methods Twenty pediatric patients …

Analysis Of Vaca/Caga Genotypes/Status In Helicobacter Pylori Isolates From Iranian Children And Their Association With Clinical Outcome, Tahereh Falsafi, Afsaneh Khani, Fatemeh Mahjoub, Ezat Asgarani, Nazli Sotoudeh

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

More than 50% of Iranian children are infected with Helicobacter pylori; however, no data exist about the association of vacA/cagA genotype/status with disease outcomes in them. We analyzed association of vacA/cagA genotypes/status of children's isolates with gastric inflammation status as the first step in H. pylori pathogenesis. Materials and methods: Antral biopsies for culture and histopathology were taken from 328 children in 1997-2009. vacA (s, m) alleles and cagA statuses of the isolates were determined by PCR. Histopathology was performed according to the Sydney system; gastritis was scored as normal, mild, moderate, severe, and follicular. Results: A total of 159 …

Hypo- And Hypervolemic Edema In Children With Steroid Sensitive Nephrotic Syndrome, Mehmet Aki̇f Büyükavci, Mahmut Çi̇vi̇li̇bal, Murat Elevli̇, Hati̇ce Ni̇lgün Selçuk Duru

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The mechanism of edema formation in nephrotic syndrome is still poorly understood. We aimed to evaluate the volume status in children with steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) and to emphasize the importance of echocardiography in demonstrating of volume changes. Materials and methods: Thirty-two SSNS patients and 30 healthy children were enrolled in this study. The volume statuses of patients were evaluated by clinical and laboratory features, including fractional sodium excretion (FENa) and distal sodium/potassium exchange (UK/UNa+K ratio). Inferior vena cava collapsibility index (IVCCI), left atrial diameter (LAD), aortic diameter (AD), and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) were measured using conventional echocardiographic …
