A Comparison Of Static Stretching Versus Combined Static And Ballistic Stretching In Active Knee Range Of Motion, Nathan R. Blackhurst, James C. Peterson, Valerie W. Herzog, Ericka P. Zimmerman

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Background: There is continued controversy related to flexibility gains from different stretching protocols and within single protocols. Stretching methods include static, ballistic, dynamic, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). A combination of stretching methods may be an improved way to increase active knee range of motion (ROM). This study evaluated a single program formulated with static and ballistic components. Objective: To compare active knee ROM following stretching programs which either included combined static and ballistic stretching (CSBS) or static stretching (SS) alone. It was hypothesized that CSBS would show a greater increase in active knee ROM than SS. Setting …

A Randomized and Blinded Study for the Treatment of Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Range of Motion Restriction: The Prone-Passive Stretching Technique

Background: Prior research has focused on specific interventions to reduce the symptoms of glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD) and posterior glenohumeral (GH) tightness; however, clinicians often utilize a prone stretching technique instead for which a lack of evidence exists to support the use of.

Hypothesis: Improvements in GH Internal rotation (IR) range of motion (ROM) will be greater in a group of overhead athletes using a prone-passive stretching technique than for overhead athletes using a cross-body stretching technique.

Factors Of Stress, Burnout, And Frustrations Experienced By Athletic Training Students, Justin Mauzy, Thomas G. Bowman, Stephanie M. Mazerolle, Carrie L. Fister

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: College students are at a risk for increased levels of stress and burnout, and those enrolled in healthcare degree programs are more likely to experience higher levels due to balancing demanding roles. Our purpose was to assess sources of stress, burnout, and/or frustration in athletic training students (ATSs) of different academic standings. Methods: Data were collected through the use of an original, 33-question questionnaire. An inductive approach was used to analyze the data and multiple analyst triangulation and interpretive member checks were used to secure credibility. Results: 27 male and female ATSs from freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes …

Should Educators Be ‘Wrapping School Playgrounds In Cotton Wool’ To Encourage Physical Activity? Exploring Primary And Secondary Students’ Voices From The School Playground, Brendon P. Hyndman, Amanda Telford Jan 2015

Should Educators Be ‘Wrapping School Playgrounds In Cotton Wool’ To Encourage Physical Activity? Exploring Primary And Secondary Students’ Voices From The School Playground, Brendon P. Hyndman, Amanda Telford

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Physical activity in school playgrounds has changed considerably over recent decades to reflect a climate of ‘surplus safety’. A growing culture of surplus safety can be attributed to a desire of parents and teachers responsible for children to protect school students from danger. The aim of this research was to examine students’ perceptions of playground safety influences on physical activity during school breaks from the perspectives of the ‘users’ of school playgrounds. Data collection consisted of seven focus groups (4 primary school & 3 secondary school) conducted across four schools (2 primary & 2 secondary). During this study, the focus …

Upper Limb Ambidexterity In The Wrestling Snap Down Technique, Nicholas A. Decastro Jan 2015

Upper Limb Ambidexterity In The Wrestling Snap Down Technique, Nicholas A. Decastro

Undergraduate Review

The sport of wrestling dates back as far as recorded history. Folk style is a subdivision of that ancient sport, considered the most popular form of wrestling in U.S high schools and universities. An important skill used by Folk style wrestlers is the snap down technique. However, there is a lack of scientific literature that examines the kinematic motions of the snap down technique bilaterally. Understanding athletic ambidexterity is an important factor in athletic performance and injury prevention, particularly in wrestling. Therefore, the purpose of the research study was to bilaterally examine the kinematic motions of the upper extremity in …

Influence Of Traditional And Nontraditional Entries On Figure Skating Jumps, Bryanna L. Nevius Jan 2015

Influence Of Traditional And Nontraditional Entries On Figure Skating Jumps, Bryanna L. Nevius

Undergraduate Review

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not adding a non-traditional jump entry into a routine is more beneficial to the skater or if there is more value in performing the same jump with a traditional entry. Specifically, the study examined the kinematics of a non-traditional verses a traditional jump entry by looking at the angles of the hip, knee, and ankle joints at take-off and landing. Maximum jump height, airtime, and horizontal displacement were also examined. It was hypothesized that non-traditional entries would change jump kinematics when compared to the same jumps performed from traditional entries. …
